A Semantic Analysis Of Phrasal Verbs Found In Fall Out Boy’s Selected Songs

CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

1.1. Background of the Study
Semantic is the branch of linguistics that concerned with how meaning
expressed in language. Semantic is the study of meaning. Sudaryat (2009:21) says
that break down “meaning” in its wides sense into several types, giving primary
importance to direct meaning as conceptual meaning. Other meaning are connotative
meaning, affective meaning, stylistic meaning, reflected meaning, collocative
meaning, idiomatic meaning, grammatical meaning, thematic meaning. The basic
point that sudaryat want to convey is that understanding the language means
understanding the meaning. In doing communication with other, wheter by using
written or spoken language, people surely have message to be convoyed, the message
are meaningful because they really have meaning. as he states on his book (2009:3)
“sebagai istilah, kata semantik digunakan untuk bidang linguistik yang mempelajari
hubungan antara tanda-tanda atau lambang-lambang dengan hal yang ditandai
disebut makna atau arti”. (As the term, word semantics is used for the field of
linguistics which studies the relationship between signs or symbols with a thing
called of meaning.)
Grammar is a field of linguistics that involves all the various things that make
up the rules of language. Grammar is also used as a term to refer to the prescriptive

rules of a given language, which may change over time and the various theories or
perspective that attempt to understand it. A grammar of a language describes the
principles or rules governing the form and meaning of words, phrases, clauses, and

sentences. Wren and Martin (1990:3) say that words are divided into different kinds
of classes, also known as part of speech, according to their usage to the work they do
in sentence.
Verb is one of parts of speech. Grammar has been taken an important part of
how to write or speak something. One of grammar’s studies is Verb. However, there
are many different kinds of verbs, including lexical auxuliary verbs, different
semantic classes, single-word verb, and multi-word verb. (Biber, Conrad, and Leech
2002:103). Multi-word verb, fall into: Phrasal verbs, Prepositional verbs, Phrasalprepositional verbs.
Phrasal verbs consist of a verb followed by an adverbial particle (for examples:
carry out, find out, or pick up). When these adverbial particles are independently, they
have literal meanings signifying location or direction (for examples: out, up, down, over,
around, off). However, in phrasal verbs they are commonly used with less literal
meanings. For example, the meaning of find out does not include the “place” meaning of
out. Phrasal Verbs are combinations of verb plus particles that regularly occur

together. They usually have a meaning of their own different from that of either of
the component parts. They are essentially new verbs (Wishon and Burks, 1980:319).
The new unit is different from the two separate words. It means that a verb plus
particle (preposition, adverb) can change the meaning of the verb completely and
create a new verb. Phrasal verbs are often used in speaking and writing in English.
It relates to studying the phrasal verbs because the writer tries to find meaning of
words and phrase. The writer needs to study about grammar to make the writer easier
to understand the phrasal verb in words. In phrasal verb, their meaning cannot be
predicted from the form of each individual word. One part of multi-word verbs is
phrasal verb.

Wren and Martin (1990:3) say: “words are divided into different kinds of
classes, also known as part of speech, according to their usage to the work they do in
sentence”. There are three kinds of verbs; they are lexical verb, auxiliary verb and
primary verb. From these three kinds of verbs, lexical verbs are the most common
and often occur as multi-word units. These combinations usually have idiomatic
meaning.

Phrasal verbs are so common in everyday conversation and writing. Human
communicate to each other use language. Language is a media of communication.
Crystal (1974:3) says that language is most frequently used and most highly
developed form of human communication. In the way of communication maybe
many people don’t realize that they use phrasal verb in all conversation to another
people. We can find many phrasal verbs in all English text books especially in
magazine, Novel, newspaper or in an article. But sometimes people don’t recognize
them as phrasal verbs. Phrasal verbs are verbs that consist of a verb and a particle (a
preposition or adverb) or a verb and two particles. For example: Laina asked Zon out
to dinner and a movie. Ask out is one of phrasal verbs. The meaning of the world is
invite on a date. It is important to understand phrasal verb because people cannot
predict from the verb or the particle, people need to get new meaning of the phrasal
verb. It is important to understand about phrasal verbs. Because when people study
about phrasal verbs without realizing people know about new words. It will enrich
the vocabularies of the learner. Olteanu (2012:7) states that along the years, phrasal
verbs have been much studied since the 16th century until now. It also denotes that
phrasal verbs are considered to be a very important and frequently occurring feature
of the English language.
