language.
It means that the language elements can be classified as the f o r m o f code

w a l l is v i e w a b l e b y a l l t h e user's friends, w a l l p o s t i n g s are a p u b l i c c o n v e r s a t i o n . T h e
user can send a person a private message, w h i c h w i l l s h o w up i n his o r her private
i n b o x . I t is n o t an o d d p h e n o m e n o n i f facebook is the m o s t popular site today, for
m a n y p e o p l e i t is a t t r a c t i v e w i t h a l l o f its features a n d t h e f u n c t i o n s .
A person can register for facebook and interact w i t h people they k n o w i n a trusted
e n v i r o n m e n t F a c e b o o k p r o v i d e s a n e a s y w a y f o r friends t o k e e p i n t o u c h a n d f o r
individuals t o have a presence o n the W e b w i t h o u t needing t o build a website. Since
facebook m a k e s it easy t o upload pictures and videos, nearly a n y o n e can p u b l i s h a
m u l t i m e d i a p r o f i l e . F a c e b o o k a l l o w s e a c h u s e r t o set p r i v a c y s e t t i n g s . A n o t h e r f e a t u r e
o f facebook, w h i c h m a k e s it so interesting, is the ability t o add applications t o user's
profile.

The History of Facebook
It w a s created i n February 2 0 0 4 , Facebook i s a social n e t w o r k i n g site that

helps people communicate m o r e efficiently w i t h their

friends,

family,

company,

colleagues. I t a l l started back i n 2 0 0 3 ; M a r k Z u c k e r b e r g created it, a l o n g w i t h help
from

his friends and roommates C h r i s Hughes and D u s t i n M o s k o v i t z . Zuckerbergs

w a s i n h i s s e c o n d y e a r at H a r v a r d w h e n o p e n i n g i t , a s a w a y t o g e t h i s m i n d . T h i s s i t e
was originally only for Harvard, but quickly grew t o other universities, then high
s c h o o l a n d e v e n t u a l l y t o a n y o n e o v e r t h e a g e o f 13 y e a r s . A f t e r a g e w a s i n i t i a l l y
started, i t is f o r w a r d e d t o the H a r v a r d school a d m i n and i t q u i c k l y closed. Z u c k e r b e r g
indicted a n d face e x p u l s i o n f o r v i o l a t i n g p r i v a c y .
T h e n , they dropped charges against H a r v a r d Zuckerberg. A f t e r charges w e r e
dropped, the n e x t t e r m h e created F a c e M a s h , and opened u p i n February 2 0 0 4 . I n
2005 he dropped

f r o m the name and U R L . A l s o i n September 2005, he launched a

h i g h school v e r s i o n facebook. W h e n he started h i g h s c h o o l v e r s i o n f o r the first t i m e ,

after the launch v e r s i o n o f the h i g h school, he began a l l o w i n g companies t o have their

CHAPTER III
RESEARCH PROCEDURES

T h i s chapter discusses t h e f o l l o w i n g points: ( 1 ) m e t h o d o f the research, ( 2 )
operational definition, (3) population a n d sample, (4) the techniques for collecting the
data, ( 5 ) the technique f o r a n a l y z i n g t h e data.

3.1

Method of the Research
I n d o i n g this research, t h e researcher used descriptive m e t h o d . A c c o r d i n g t o

N a z i r ( 1 9 8 8 : 6 3 ) , a descriptive m e t h o d i s a m e t h o d i n research t h e status o f a g r o u p
are h u m a n , a n object, a set o f c o n d i t i o n , a t h o u g h t s y s t e m , o r a n e v e n t that hsqipened
today. T h e a i m o f this m e t h o d is t o m a k e a description systematically, factual a n d
accurate t o w a r d t h e facts, characters, a n d t h e r e l a t i o n b e t w e e n p h e n o m e n o n w h i c h i s
investigated. T h i s research also used qualitative since a l l data collection are i n t h e
f o r m o f words. According t o M a h s u n (2006:233), qualitative

research

aims t o

c o m p r e h e n d t h e social p h e n o m e n o n includes linguistic p h e n o m e n o n , a n d t h e data i s
not numbers but words.

line w i t h this o p i n i o n , "sample is a part o f p o p u l a t i o n as an e x a m p l e that is t o o k use
special w a y s ( M a r g o n o , 2 0 0 4 : 1 2 1 ) . T h e researcher used purposive s a m p l i n g t o decide
t h e s a m p l e from t h e p o p u l a t i o n a s ( M a r g o n o , 2 0 0 4 : 1 2 8 ) s t a t e s t h a t , " p u r p o s i v e i s
based o n special characteristics that are v i e w e d h a v e the relevance t o the p o p u l a t i o n
characteristics w h i c h i s k n o w n before. T h e sample unit is related and adapted t o the
special characteristic based o n research objective. T h e r e are about 4 0 facebook users

FINDINGS AND I N T E R P R E T A T I O N S

T h i s chapter discusses t h e findings a n d interpretations o f the study. F i n d i n g s
consist o f ( 1 ) t h e result o f the recording a n d questionnaire a n d t h e data analysis. T h e
interpretations discuss the researcher's interpretation based o n the data analysis.

Findings of the Research
T h e d a t a w e r e o b t a i n e d f r o m p r i n t s c r e e n t h e f a c e b o o k p a g e from m o n i t o r a n d

the questionnaire distributed t o t h e sample o f facebook users, especially u n i v e r s i t y
students. T h e f o l l o w i n g sections o u t l i n e the description o f each f i n d i n g .

The Result of Recording
A f t e r d o i n g t h e research, t h e researcher f o u n d that 1 7 4 utterances consisting

o f E n g l i s h m i x i n g codes t a k e n f r o m 4 0 facebook users. T h e

various percentages. T h e r e w e r e 5 1 . 1 % f o r E n g l i s h m i x i n g i n t h e f o r m o f w o r d , 3 0 .
5 % f o r E n g l i s h m i x i n g i n t h e f o r m o f phrase, f o r E n g l i s h m i x i n g i n t h e f o r m o f
c l a u s e r e a c h e d 1 3 . 8 %, a n d t h e l a s t 4 . 6 % f o r e n g l i s h m i x i n g i n t h e f o r m o f h y b r i d .
