What is KSSR?
• According to MOE,
the Kurikulum
Standard Sekolah
Rendah (KSSR) or
Stand National
Education Policy is
the latest learning
theory that based on
FPN in Malaysia.

Goals

Characteristics
• Fewer subjects but using a more interactive
approach. (MOE)

• According to MOE, the policy is adopts the
four pillars of education UNESCO, which is
learning to know, learning to do, learning to
live together and learning to be.

• Developed curriculum also includes the
Special Education curriculum. To ensure that
the curriculum is suitable of the students, a
test would conducted in selected primary
schools throughout the country (MOE).
• Introduce 4M, which are reading, writing,
mathematics and reasoning skill.

Modules for Stage 1

Modules for Stage 2
• The curriculum emphasizes strengthening and
applying the 3Rs, basic ICT skills, development
of socio-emotional, spiritual, physical,
cognitive, attitudes and values. (MOE)

• According to MOE, content knowledge is
presented through 9 subjects.
• However, some subject are redesigned either
by combining two or more disciplines of
knowledge into one subject.

• Subject such as Living Skills, Civics and
Citizenship Education and Local Studies are
replaced by new subjects. The new subjects
are Design and Technology / Information and
Communication Technology, Visual Arts and
Music and History / Malaysia Negaraku. (MOE)

• The Education Ministry’s Curriculum
Development Department deputy director Dr
Azian T. S. Abdullah said it would cater to all
students and give them a chance to explore
their abilities, especially those with special
needs. (New Straits Times, 2013)
• “The curriculum also pays attention to special

needs kids, as well as Orang Asli and Penan
students,” she said. (New Straits Times, 2013)

• For children who are talented and gifted, the
curriculum allow for them to be fast-tracked,
and lessen the period of time for school — to
five years instead of six in primary, and four
years instead of five in secondary school. (New
Straits Times, 2013)

• The KSSR, said Azian, will also be reviewed each
year, to make room for improvements and to
fall in line with the objectives in the National
Education Blueprint. (New Straits Times, 2013)
• Bahasa Malaysia, each school will have to fulfill
up to 140 hours per year. (New Straits Times,
2013)

• schoolchildren will have the option of
choosing a range of international languages to

learn from, as the ministry is looking to
implement a new syllabus under KSSR. The
new curriculum seeks to introduce new
subjects such as languages including Iban,
Kadazan, Spanish and Arabic by 2017 in all
schools nationwide. (New Straits Times, 2013)

Roles
• According to MOE, the role of students:
- Be balanced in intellectually, spiritually,
emotionally, physically and socially
- Responsible citizens
- Citizens who can play in the global arena
(Global Player)
- Knowledgeable Staf

Teachers
• Apply classroom strategies which promote
creative and critical thinking and innovation
among pupils (eduinfomania, 2012)

• Teachers need to be sensitive to students’
learning needs and be able to indentify
learning styles which suits them best.

• Classroom practices such as inquiry-based,
problem-based and project-based are some
recommended strategies which promote
critical and creative thinking and innovation
among pupils. (eduinfomania, 2012)

• The KSSR proposes the implementation of
schools-based assessments to gauge students’
potentials and the efectiveness of the
teaching and learning process in the
classroom. (eduinfomania, 2012)

• This formative assessment will inform teachers
on suitable remedial or enhancement
treatments for pupils. It will also help teachers
indentify and plan salient and efective
classroom strategies. (eduinfomania, 2012)

Government
• According to eduinfomania, 2012, the Ministry
has carried out relevant training to expose
primary school teachers to successfully and
meaningfully impart the improved contents,

required skills and expected values inherent in
the KSSR.

Implementation
• The Education Director- general, Tan Sri
Alimuddin Mohd Dom had formally launched
the KSSR on 14th October 2010 for all primary
one students in 2011. (Chong Lip Teck, 2010)
• According to eduinfomania (2012), The
implementation of KSSR brings about certain

changes to the curriculum content and
practices in the primary school system.

• According to eduinfomania (2012), the KSSR
proposes the implementation of schoolsbased assessments to gauge students’
potentials and the efectiveness of the
teaching and learning process in the
classroom.
• The remodeling of curriculum content through
the introduction of new subjects, emphases
on sound pedagogical approaches and holistic
assessment methods are among the initiatives
outlined in KSSR. (eduinfomania, 2012)

• KSSR will be implemented fully in 2016 where
Year Six students will no longer be evaluated
based on their Ujian Penilaian Sekolah Rendah
(UPSR) results, but from their overall
performance and classroom participation.

Issues
• However, it is takes some times because the
Ministry of Education and teachers are at the
beginning. National People's concept of
change, also needs a lot of years. Let us look
toward a good curriculum outcomes.
