C ultural Sciences. Sebelas Maret University.
T his research is conducted find out the translation quality of A mplification
T echnique of novel “The Casual Vacancy”. The aims of this research are: (1) to
identify and describe amplification technique applied in translating the English
version into the Indonesian version of the novel The Casual Vacancy and (2) to
find out the impacts of amplification technique on the translation quality in the
novel T he Casual V acancy in terms of accuracy, acceptability, and readability.
T his is a descriptive qualitative research. This conforms to the purposes of
the research which are to identify, describe, and analyze the amplification
technique in the forms of noun and noun phrase. There were two sources of data.
T he first source of data in this research was the novel T he Casual V acancy written
by J . K . Rowling and its translation in Bahasa Indonesia. T he second source of
data was the informants. There were two types of informant; respondent who gave
the information about readability, and rater who gave information about accuracy
and acceptability. The methods of data collection were content analysis,
distributing questionnaire, and interviewing. Purposive sampling was applied in
this research
T he research findings show that there were 406 data of amplification
consisting of 323 (79,5%) data of explicitation, 53 (13,0%) data of addition, 25
(6,1%) data of paraphrase, and 5 (1,2%) data of footnote. The impact on the
translation quality was good. This is because 310 data (95,97%) were found
accurate, 318 data (98,45%) were found acceptable, and 293 data (90,71%) have
high readability.
T his research is intended to bring benefits for translators in applying good
amplification technique, students in improving translating skill, and other
researchers in conducting related research.
