3. METHODS OF DATA ANALYSIS

3.1 Methods

Method of analysis is an important thing of scientific studies in analyzing the problems of research .It is important for a researcher to determine the research method that they would like to use in conducting a research. According to Sudaryanto (1993:9)., A method is a kind of systematical work plan in order to make the research work become easier, so that it can achieve its main purpose. There are some parts of data research of analysis method. Nawawi ( 1991: 30 ) divides types of research into three parts; laboratory research, library research, and field research.

In this chapter, the writer would like to explain the research method which is used by the writer of this paper. Research method is consist of research design, object of the research, data source, method of data collection, and method of data analysis.

3.2 Research Method 3.2.1 Research Design

This analysis will be conducted with descriptive qualitative research. Nawawi (1991:32) states that qualitative research uses the data which is used verbally and the qualification is theoretically. The data is not analyzed through the mathematical calculation but it is done rationally. It is defined as a description of observations in explanation term without calculation or numeric. In this research, the writer described the analysis of metaphor in psalm of bible focused in psalm

of David and explained the meaning of the metaphor which is found in psalm of David.

3.2.2 Object of the Research

According to Arikunto (2002:102), population is the whole number of the subjects or people under observation in a research. Koentjaraningrat (1997:115) says that, population is the whole research data.

In this case, the population of this analysis research is all verse that contain metaphor in Psalm of Bible which is focused in Psalm of David in New King James Version Bible published by The Indonesian Bible Society. The researcher will take some verses of sections as the data viewed from the using of metaphor in psalm of David of Bible.

3.2.3 Data Sources

The sources of the data of this analysis research are the selected section and verses in Psalm of Bible which is focused in Psalm of David. The data are the verses which contain of Metaphor.

3.2.4 Method of Data Collection

According to Koentjaraningrat, documentation is a method used to get data about some variables like magazine, recording, book and letter (1985: 64). In this research, the writer use selected verses in Psalm of Bible which is focused in Psalm of David as the data source. Then, the writer takes the data focused on the use of Metaphor in Psalm of David.

Nawawi (1991:144) states that sample is a part of population to represent the whole population.

There following procedures are the term of data analyzed: a. Data Collection

In this step the writer reads the Psalm of Bible. After that, the writer is selected Psalm of David as the object of research.

b. The identification

After collecting the data, the writer Search information about metaphor in books, find the metaphor in verses of Psalm of David.

c. Data Analysis

In this part, the writer only analyze about metaphor only that is found in Psalm of David. The writer collects all data and makes it in list and analyzes the meaning and gets the finding from the analysis.

4.1 DATA FINDINGS

In this part, the writer will show the selected data of research which is taken from Psalm of Bible and focused in Psalm of David. These following are the selected data:

1. Psalm 3 : 3 But You, O Lord, are a shield for me, My glory and the One who lifts up my head.

2. Psalm 3 : 4 I cried to the Lord with my voice, And He heard me from His holy hill. Selah

3. Psalm 5 : 2 Give heed to the voice of my cry, My King and my God, For to You I will pray.

4. Psalm 5 : 9 For there is no faithfulness in their mouth; Their inward part is destruction; Their throat is an open tomb; They flatter with their tongue. 5. Psalm 7 : 10 My defense is of God, Who saves the upright in heart.

6. Psalm 7 : 11 God is a just judge, And God is angry with the wicked every day.

7. Psalm 8 : 5 For You have made him a little lower than the angels, And You have crowned him with glory and honor.

32 4.2 DATA ANALYSIS

The source data to be analyzed are taken from the Psalm of Holy Bible and the selected Psalm is Psalm of David. The writer will be analyzed the data based on Metaphor according to Keraf ( 1998:19 ). Keraf says metaphor is a kind of analogy that compares two things directly, metaphor as a direct compression which does not use the word: like, as, if so that the first thing is directly to relieve to the second.In this paper, the writer found many figurative languages in Psalm of David. That’s why we have to find the figurative meaning to get the proper or suitable understanding of the sentence in verse of Psalm of David.

7 You have crowned him with glory and honor.

In literal meaning, crown means a decorative object that is shaped like a circle and worn on the head of a king or queen for special ceremony. We know a crown is precious. Not all of people can have it. But figuratively, That clause is compared with the lovingkindness of Lord to human. And in that clause God is crowned us with glory and honor. Our God really love us. The Sanctuary Again in this verse the word ‘Sanctuary’ is a kind of symbol. Literally, Sanctuary means an area where wild birds or animals are protected and encourage breeding. Here, Sanctuary is compared with the Heaven Palace, which is a place of God. It describes how high and holy the Place of Jesus is. He is nobler than the entire things in the world.

- The Holy Bible uses so many Metaphors especially in the book Psalm of David in Psalm of Bible. Metaphor is a kind of Figurative language, the non-literal meaning. Non-literal meaning occurs when a sentence or expression has a hidden meaning besides the lexical meaning. Non-literal meaning is ways to express an idea in abstract or imaginative way.

- From the metaphor analysis the writer see that God can be depicted according to experience and culture of a nation. Of course, God's Metaphor in Psalm can't be discharged from experience and culture which forming Israel as owner of Psalm. Depiction of God in Psalm is also proving the opinion that perceivable God as person who is transcendent and believable. Transcendent means outside of human readiness, extraordinary, and especial. Believable mean there is in human brain and mind. God's transcendent is God who overcoming everything, a person who is out of human logic. God is really difficult to be comprehended only with the human logic (Jacobs, 2002: 78). Therefore, the transcendent characteristic requires being equipped with the believable characteristic. Literally, believable mean who stay in so that the character of this believable want to say that the God is also the person who is close to human (KWI, 1996: 143). 5. CONCLUSIONS AND SUGGESTIONS

5.1 Conclusions

After the writer doing an analysis of all data, there following are some conclusion which writer gets:

- The Holy Bible uses so many Metaphors especially in the book Psalm of David in Psalm of Bible. Metaphor is a kind of Figurative language, the non-literal meaning. Non-literal meaning occurs when a sentence or expression has a hidden meaning besides the lexical meaning. Non-literal meaning is ways to express an idea in abstract or imaginative way.

- From the metaphor analysis the writer see that God can be depicted according to experience and culture of a nation. Of course, God's Metaphor in Psalm can't be discharged from experience and culture which forming Israel as owner of Psalm. Depiction of God in Psalm is also proving the opinion that perceivable God as person who is transcendent and believable. Transcendent means outside of human readiness, extraordinary, and especial. Believable mean there is in human brain and mind. God's transcendent is God who overcoming everything, a person who is out of human logic. God is really difficult to be comprehended only with the human logic (Jacobs, 2002: 78). Therefore, the transcendent characteristic requires being equipped with the believable characteristic. Literally, believable mean who stay in so that the character of this believable want to say that the God is also the person who is close to human (KWI, 1996: 143). What the entire Psalm writer done is the effort to comprehend the transcendent God become the Believable God.

- There are 63 metaphor exist in Psalm of David and there are three things which is expressed in metaphor form, those are 1) 40 metaphors about God and interconnected things about God. 2) 11 metaphors about God People and interconnected things about God people. 3) 12 metaphors about Enemy of God people and interconnected things about them.

- The metaphor about God is the most dominant metaphor in Psalm of David. Those are, there are 40 metaphor forms about God, God is often compared with objects, and it is like stone, mount, hill, stick, and shield. And God is also often compared with human act like father, king, shepherd and judge.

5.2 Suggestioon

The writer would like to suggest the English student to analyze metaphor in the Bible because metaphor is an interesting subject to study and analyze. In metaphor the words are saying have other meaning. That is why the writer thinks it is important for English student who want to know more about meaning especially about metaphor. The metaphor can also be found in verses of Bible which showing about how word of God submit beautifully and draw in Bible and also make an impression hidden meaning in it, so that make us of think to know the real meaning. Comprehending metaphor in Bible is not same as ordinary metaphor, because congeniality of someone about word of God is not same, progressively someone deepen content of Bible, hence, their understanding about metaphor which there are in Bible is also better, because her knowledge is quite
