The Analysis of Independent Learning of IC Students
to Study English Outside the Class
ABSTRACT
Integrated Course (IC) is a subject that English Department students have to
take in the first semester by the time they enter Satya Wacana Christian University.
Scheduled eight hours a week, IC is a difficult subject for many students. First, it
requires students to get at least a C to pass. Second, it compels students to study
everyday to keep up with the lessons. So, this study examined how IC2 students of
2008/2009 academic year spent their time to study English outside the class to keep
up with the lessons. The data were gathered by giving the subjects questionnaire.
After analyzing the data obtained, the findings of this research revealed that IC
students of 2008/2009 academic year spent their time to study English outside the
class mostly by reviewing the IC lessons (78,13%) and preparing the material one
day before class (71,88%) to enrich the IC lessons. What they did outside class match
their needs because they considered IC materials, particularly the reading, and
structure, were difficult to understand.
Key words: Integrated Course, independent learning, language skills.
