PART A: READING COMPREHENSION (20 MARKS)
PASSAGE I (10 MARKS)
Read the passage and answer the questions that follow.
I

A flood is a natural occurrence that has a devastating effect on people
and the environment. It is an overflow of water and the excessive
presence of this causes destruction in areas which are badly hit by it. In
other words, a flood is having too much water in the 'wrong' place.

II

A flood is usually caused by a heavy downpour resulting in

rivers

5

overflowing their banks, and it can happen at any time of the year.
Floods generally develop over a period of days when there is too much
rainwater to fit in the rivers. As a result, water overflows onto the land
on either side of them. However, flood can happen very quickly when
lots of heavy rain falls over a short period of time. These 'flash floods'

10

occur with little or no warning. It also causes a bigger loss of human
lives compared to other types of flooding. Coastal areas are also at risk
from sea flooding, when storms and big waves bring sea water onto the

land. The worst cases of flooding may occur if there is a combination of
storms, high and low tides and low atmospheric pressure.

III

15

Floodwater can seriously interrupt transportation by cutting off roads and
railway lines, as well as communication links when telephone lines are
damaged. Floods can also disrupt normal drainage systems in cities,
and cause sewage spills which are a serious health hazard. Bacteria,
mould and viruses may cause diseases, trigger allergic reactions, and

20

continue to damage materials long after a flood. In the farmlands, rich
soils can be eroded by large amounts of fast flowing water. This can
ruin crops, wash away rich agricultural land, destroy buildings and drown
farm animals.

Severe floods not only ruin homes, disrupt businesses and damage

25

personal property, but the water left behind also causes further damage
to property and its contents. The environment and wildlife are also at
risk if damage to businesses causes the accidental release of toxic
materials like paints, pesticides and gasoline.

Unfortunately, flooding

not only disrupts people's lives each year, but also causes personal

30

tragedies when people are swept away and drowned.

V

The Environment Agency (EA) in the United Kingdom protects people
and their properties by giving warnings of possible floods. People can
make arrangements and move out of the affected area if in danger.
There are several flood codes. Yellow alert warning signals refer to

35

possible flooding of low lying land and roads, orange alert warning
signals indicate possible flooding of homes and businesses, red alert

warning signals indicate severe flooding and extreme danger to life and
property and green alert warning signals indicate that warning alerts are
lifted for that particular area.

VI

40

If one is living in a flood prone area, there are a few precautionary
measures that one should take to be prepared. One such measure is to
understand what the flood codes mean and to know what to do when a
warning is issued. It is advisable to tune in to the news to get an update
on the weather condition. It is also advisable to keep a list of useful

45

numbers on hand such as the police, the hospital and the fire brigade. It
is also wise to pack and keep medical supplies and important
documents at a safe place where they are easy to get hold of. Thus,
one will not be caught by surprise if there is a flash flood.
