Poverty is the dominant factor of social problems in most countries. Islam views that the poverty is a
structural problem because Allah has guarantee the fortune of every creature in the past, now and the
future. One of the solution offered by islam in poverty alleviation problem is zakat mechanism. In
country contex, zakat management in indonesia has been a long way path from Dutch Colonialism until
present. Zakat management refer to UU Pengelolaan Zakat (Law of Zakat Management) No. 38/1999,
From institutional and zakat usage model, the fund management of zakat is specific and measurable
adopting element of management of modern institutions. This research aims to identify the awareness
of zakat management organization (OPZ) in Surakarta in distributing zakat to productive sector, analyzing
the characteritics of OPZ that have influence in distributing funds to productive sector. The result from
analyzing responses of 13 samples shows that all OPZ already have awareness in distributing zakat for
productive sector but only four OPZ that have made efforts in small proportion. They are BAZDA, Dinar
Peduli, Fosmil, and Solo Peduli. The other result from in-depth interview shows that the lack of the
qualified staffs is the main problem for organization capability in distributing zakat for productive sector.
