FloutingTheGricean’s MaximOnThe Hell Baby Movie”(A Pragmatic Approach). Thesis : English Department, Faculty Of Cultural ScienceS, SebelasMaret University, Surakarta
This research was conducted to find out the types of flouting maxims employed by the characters in the film Hell Baby. It is also carried out to identifyhow the characters employ the implicatures and to find out the reasons on flouting the maxims employed by the characters in the film entitled “Hell Baby”.
This research is a descriptive qualitative research which takes purposive sampling
technique. The data of this research were taken from the dialogue containing the flouting maxims in the film entitled “Hell Baby”. They were classified by using Gricean cooperative principle theory.
The findings of the research show that there are eight types of flouting maxims employed by the characters in the film “Hell Baby”. They are the flouting of maxim Quality, the flouting of maxim Quantity, the flouting of maxim Relation, and the flouting of maxim Manner, the overlap of maxim Quality and Quantity, the overlap of maxim Quality and Manner, the overlap of maxim Quantity and Manner and the overlap of maxim Quantity and Relation. The flouting maxim of Quality is mostly employed by the characters. The flouting the maxims in the “Hell’s Baby” movie have the implicatures to ask someone for doing something, to shift the topic, to express one’s feeling, to refuse, to appologize, to show disagreement, to get attention, to convince, to avoid more questions and to satire.
The conclusions are six reasons why the characters flout the maxims to show the implicatures. It depends on the situation and the context of the utterances. It is also due to such factors as the social stratum, the closeness of the relation between the locutors and the interlocutors, the level of age of the thelocutors and the interlocutors, and the information contained in the speakers’ utterance itself.
