ABSTRACT

This research is about jargon which is part of Sociolinguistics Study. This study is an attempt to investiagate the types of jargons used in the day-to-day practices and services of the church. In addition this also attempts to find out how the jargons are formed so that this will finally expected to benefit the church community in general.

This research uses qualitative data which were taken from recorded Christian Church sermons as source. In addition, the data were also taken from interviewing the pastors. The data were transcribed and analyzed to find out their meanings. For validating the data, the writer interviewed three pastors who have learned about Theology and also interviewed twelve Christian activists to check whether the meanings of jargon words the writer had collected were correct. The writer collected 65 jargon words that Christian people often hear, and the result suggest that the jargon words are mostly originally from Indonesian and Greek, the rest are from Hebrews, English, Aramaic, and Latin. The Christian jargon word formation processes are mostly formed through borrowing and coinage. This may be because the jargons are directly interpreted in the Bible and directly applied in Christians' daily lives and also the fact that the Christian Theology is originally from Jewish's belief.
