Lao Tzu
Introduction
Lao Tzu who was born in 6th century BC is a
most famous Chinese philosopher. And he is
famous for his book named “Tao Te Ching”
written in bamboo tablet, in which about

eighty stories about ethics is included. He is
also believed as the father of Taoism.

Religious philosophy
As he is considered as the founder of Taoism, his
religious views appeared in his book, “Tao Te
Ching”, as below:
“The goal of Taoists is to attain harmony with the Tao.
This attainment of harmony with the Tao is also seen as
living in accord with nature.  Taoism is profound in its
naturalism.  Nature is something that should not be
exploited and abused, it should be befriended not
conquered.   The ideal man in Taoism is one who
through the naturalness of his existence became selfsufficient and not dependent upon wealth or social
realms.  It was this way that true happiness could be
found”.

Virtues
HE highest goodness is like water, for water is
excellent in benefiting all things, and it does not

strive. It occupies the lowest place, which men
abhor. And therefore it is near akin to Tao.
The man of highest virtue appears lowly. He who is truly
pure behaves as though he were sullied. He who has
virtue in abundance behaves as though it were not
enough. He who is firm in virtue seems like a skulking
pretender. He who is simple and true appears unstable
as water.
“To realize that you do not understand is a virtue; Not to
realize that you do not understand is a defect.”

Politics

Lao Tzu said,
“When people don’t feel threatened by power, the
greater power will follow.”
Don’t squeeze people’s lives.
Don’t oppress them.
If they are not oppressed, they will not resist.
Why are people starving?
Because the rulers eat up the money in taxes.
Therefore the people are starving.
Why are the people rebellious?
Because the rulers interfere too much.
Therefore they are rebellious.
