AN ANALYSIS OF MORAL VALUES FOUND IN PHILIP PROWS’ NOVEL BRISTOL MURDER

1 CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION

This chapter discusses about introduction. The discussion includes background of the study, statement of the problem, objectives of the study, and significances of the study.

1.1 Background of the Study

Literature is a very good kind of writing that can be enlightening for the human being. However it also has a big effect. It means that we could drop once and for all the illusions that the category of literature is objective, in the sense of being forever given and unchanging (Eagleton, 2003: 9).

Literature is a study that concerns a whole range of human life and activities that expressed in words permanently (written or spoken). Literature expresses thoughts, feelings, ideas or other special aspects of human experiences, and it is a work of art that is not restricted to only one form, but that there are different types depending on the writer's devices, theme and kinds of writing (Ade & Okunoye, 2008: 3).

Novel is a created prose narrative of significant length and a certain complex that related with human fantasy and people experience that usually related with sequence of events involving a group of persons in a specific place. Within the framework of a broad, the genre of the novel has included an extensive range of types and style such as romantic and realist (Burgess, 2014: 1).

According to George & Uyanga, values as things considered worthwhile, desirable, right and good and thus craved for and applied on a daily reason to

improve the existence by the people the other that values ensure people’s identity and cultural continuity. Moral values are taught to be taken by members of the society to improve character development and introduce good moral education and moral health in personals. Moral health is created in individuals when someone becomes capable of understanding the principles of moral behavior and is acted to behaving morally in his dealings with others (2014: 41).

By reading a novel, the reader does not only get the pleasure of enjoying the story but also realizes the messages which are implied in the novel. It assists us to grasp the human feeling and curiosity besides the suffering of the other people. In addition, the difference cultures and values also can be learnt through this book-length story.

Through a novel, a novelist can improve reader‘s comprehension such as morality. The writer of the novel usually builds the development of the character which is very complicated and having various problems. While the reader reads the sequence of the story, he or she can feel or imagine the situation in the story, although there is a little picture, which helps him or her to understand the context of the story.

In this study, the researcher analyzed Bristol Murder novel, written by Philip Prows. It is one of his great works that tells us about a story of a murder case in Bristol, England. The murder is driven by the students who do not like the way his teacher in teaching. His name is Tommy Logan and his teacher’s name is Mr. Stevens. The teacher has a rough character, easily got angry, and often does violent things to Tommy Logan and the others in the class. He always gets angry

while teaching if the students come late or cannot answer his question clearly. He regularly gives the student a lot of homeworks, because of that many of the students dislike him. However, in this case, Tomy Logan does not mean to kill his teacher because he just wants to defend himself. Hopefully, the readers acquire the moral values of this novel.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

In this research, the researcher would like to focus on the following

problem, what are the moral values implied in Philip Prows’ novel?

1.3The Objectives of the Study

Based on the statements of the problem, the intention of the research is to find out the moral values implied in Philip Prows’ novel.

1.4Significances of the Study

In this research, the significances of the study are divided into two parts: 1. Theoretically

The researcher expects the result of this study can be advantageous to the world of literature as the complement to the study of Bristol Murder and contributes to the development of moral values for people who are interested in literature study, which are taken from in this novel.

4 2. Practically

The researcher hopes that the study can provide to the development of literary study, particularly among the people who are interested in literature study. The researcher also expects that the readers can take the moral values in the Bristol Murdernovel.

1.5Definition of Terms

To avoid possible misunderstanding and misinterpreting of this study, it is necessity to clarify some of the term as follows:

1. Moral Values

Moral values are values taught to be absorbed by members of the society to improve character development and advance good moral in education and moral health in every individual (George and Uyanga, 2014: 41).

2. Novel

Novel is a kind of fiction, and fiction can be defined as the art or craft that may it through the written word, delegations from human life divert or both (Burgess, 2014: 1).

3. Philip Prows

Philip was born on June 9th, 1947, in Cornwall in the south-west of England. He is a teacher who loves writing. He studied English Literature at Cambridge University from 1965 to 1968. He was also one of the editors of the poetry magazine Solstice. After he received his degree from Cambridge, Philip started working for the British Council (Prows, 2003: 1).

5 4. Bristol Murder

Bristol Murder novel is the novel that is analyzed in this study. It talks about the struggle to break the murder case that happened in Bristol, England and to find out the murderer.

The Bristol Murder novel idea came to Philip when he was thinking about

cowboy stories. He says the hero of the story is a lorry driver. He thought that the lorry driver of today is a bit like the cowboys we know from Hollywood movies.
