CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

This chapter presented about background of study, problem of study, purpose of study, significance of the study, scope and limitation and definition of key term.

1.1Background of study

In modern era, technology has important roles for human life. Technology is usually used to find out the newest information, science, knowledge, economic information and etc. It gives some effects to human society, especially internet. Now, many societies use internet to help their difficulties. Internet is a global system of interconnected computer network, by the internet we can interact each other whether we are far from their countries or not. We can use facebook, email, yahoo messanger, twitter, BBM and camfrog. All of the social network in internet become our lifestyle, it can not be separated each other, such as facebook.

Facebook is one of the human society. Many people interact to make and join in

facebook. From facebook, we can get so many friends even from the outside our country easily. Because we just add friend or accept the friend invitation. We can know our new friends closely.Besides, facebook is usually used by the teenagers. But sometimes the adult people used it. The teenagers here are the digital natives who are grown-up as students.

Digital native is person who was born and grew up when the technology were developed. It supported by ( Prensky: 2001) who stated that “they have spent their whole time and lives surrounded by and using computer, videogames, digital music players, cell phone and all the other digital toys and tools”. They were really fast to receive the information. They will always be curious about the recent technology development and they can absorb and learn it easily.

Facebook is usually identically with social status update. Status update is an interesting feature in facebook, which allow users to post message for their friend (Collier, 2012). Many people often update status every time (minutes and hours). We share about our love, experience (good and bad experience), and our promises. We can understand the conditions and the informations about our daily life from our status update. And when we got the problem, we got feedback or suggestion from other friends on facebook. It is like diary for human life. Because we can writes everything on status update.

In writing update status, usually the members of facebook include smileys or emoticons and also colloquial words to make the writing looks interesting, cute, funny and stylish. According to (Trask: 1999) colloquial is ordinary, relaxed, informal speech such as using contractions, using connecting words and phrase, using abbreviated utterances, using many words and expressions. We would avoid in formal context and may use swear-words freedomly and so on, for instanceshe’d’ve, y’know,

According to (Djenar: 2006), the colloquial variety of Indonesian that has been referred to by various scholars as bahasa tak baku „non-standard language‟, bahasa informal „informal language‟, bahasa gaul „social language‟, bahasa ABG „teen

language‟, bahasa remaja „youth language‟, „informal Jakartan Indonesian‟, and

„colloquial Indonesian‟. It means that colloquial is very popular in media, particularly those aimed at the youth, yet until recently, it has been little understood. For the teenager is very closely to other friend.

Colloquial words used in update status usually have shorter form than the standart language. Even some of them are combaining letters and numbers, but we can read them as the proper language. So we do not misunderstand and miscommunication when we had communication.

The first research was conducted by Ramadhani (2007). She analyzed about the colloquial language used by the member of friendster in writing testimonial in internet. There were 61 colloquial words and 9 technical terms. Those terms can be divided into 2. The first is technical terms which support the theory such as clipping, blending, acronym and hypocorism. The second is technical term which is not support the theory such as number as word, number and letter as word, reducing letter and changing spelling.

The second research was conducted by Ramadhanti (2010). The result of this study showed that there were 146 colloquial words founds in Black Eyed Peas song

lyric from “Monkey Bussiness” album. Most of them the colloquial words found in

the song lyrics were abbreviation. There were some differences among interpreters to interpret the meaning of colloquial words. From 146 words, there were 17 colloquial words which three interpreters had different interpretation. It is due to several factors; the interpreters level of ability the interpreter frequency of English exposure and the availability supporting facilities.

The third research was conducted by Indriawati (2011). The result of this study showed that there were 90 colloquial words. There were 43 colloquial words based on the theory word formation process and 47 colloquial words did not belong to the theory found on English writing update status facebook in internet

www.facebook.com. There were used 8 technical terms based on theory word formation process to form the colloquial words.

Based on the previous writer above, the writer is inspired to investigate the colloquial word used by digital natives in facebook status update writing.
