After finding out the conflicts, the writer seeks out the existing messages that arise in the literature work. The w
riter uses M.H. Abrams’s idea which explains that,
In addition to the conflicts between individual, there may be the conflict of a protagonist against fate, or against circumstances that stand between
him and a goal he has set himself, and in some works, the conflict is between opposing desires or values in a character’s of own mind
Abrams, 1981:128.
Based on the quotation above, the conflict can help the writer to dig up the hidden message in the story. By finding out how the characters solve their
problem, the writer can reveal the message that exists implicitly.
C. Method of the Study
The writer did a library research for this study. There were two essential sources that is used in this study. The first source was the novel itself,
The Queen of the Tearling
. The first source is used by the writer to get the data that is essential for the writer, to analyze the story and to get the proper answer of the
problem formulation. The second source was the books that provided theory of character characteristics, conflicts and messages which were used to answer the
three problems, reference of related studies and the approach on the work. The writer applied New Criticism as the approach of the study.
There were few steps that the writer did in analyzing the novel. The first step was to read and to understand the chosen object, novel
The Queen of the Tearling
by Erika Johansen. The second step was to figure out the interest things of the novel which made the novel different with other novel. Then the writer
tried to answer the first problem which was finding and describing the characteristic and the characterization of Kelsea, the main character. The writer
chose the most prominent characteristics of the main character. After that, the writer tried to answer the second problem which was describing the conflicts that
Kelsea faced in the novel. The writer analyzed the conflicts one by one and clarified them as internal and external conflicts. After the conflicts were compiled,
the writer found out how Kelsea solved the conflicts she faced to be a
True Queen
. The last step done by the writer was analyzing the moral messages which
was revealed on the way Kelsea solved her problems. The writer analyzed the messages by seeing how Kelsea responded to her conflicts. After the analysis part
had been done, the writer made the conclusion part. The writer made the conclusion by concluding all of the analysis; started from how Kelsea is
described, how Kelsea responded to her conflicts in the novel, and what messages are revealed on Kelsea’s ways to be a
