4. Vocabulary Coverage of Chapter III The data shown below are the results after running RANGE over chapter
III of the textbook corpus. Based on the data analysis, the vocabulary coverage of chapter III of the textbook is as follows.
Table 4.4 Vocabulary Coverage of Chapter III
Chapter III Word Lists
Token Type
Word Family
GSL_1 69782.39
17879.11 144
GSL_2 394.61
177.56 15
AWL 80.95
62.67 6
Not in the list 10212.06
2410.67 NA
Total 846
225 165
Based on the data presented in the table, the percentage of token, type, and word family in chapter III is still dominated from those found in GSL_1. This provides
a very good opportunity for JHS students as beginners in learning English because the content is accessible for students in that range. Tokens, types, and word
families from GSL_2 will also help students enrich their vocabulary knowledge, with the percentage of 4.61, 7.56, and 15 word families.
The number of token, type, and word family in GSL_1 and GSL_2 is also added with a number of token, type, and word family found in AWL and outside
the three lists. It reaches 13.01 of the total tokens, 13.34 of the total type, and 6 word families. With the total number of token, type, and word family in chapter
III, which is dominated by words from GSL_1, learning chapter III would not be too demanding for beginners, considering that the word list covers 1,000 most
frequent English words. By being guided by a good teacher, learning words in GSL_1 will be easier.
However, to reach the level of unassisted reading, enough effort should be done by both students and teacher because knowing words from GSL_1 and
GSL_2 will only bring 87 text coverage. This percentage needs to be increased to the percentage of 95. To reach the level, all tokens in AWL should be taught.
By doing this, the text coverage will increase into 87.95. Unfortunately, this percentage is still far from the appropriate one. Thus, more than a half of the
tokens in the fourth list should also be taught. Most of them deal with spelling. This makes this chapter requires bigger efforts to learn than the previous chapters.
5. Vocabulary Coverage of Chapter IV The data shown below are the results after running RANGE over chapter
IV of the textbook corpus. Based on the data analysis, the vocabulary coverage of chapter IV of the textbook is as follows.
