C. Sample and Sampling Technique
Sam ple in qualit at ive research is t ot ally different from quant it at ive research. In qualit at ive research, sam ples are not t aken from populat ion. This is because qualit at ive
research int ends not t o m ake generalizat ion, but t o gain inform ation w hich will support t he t heory M oleong, 2007: 224. Sam ple is a part of represent at ion of t he dat a t hat
being observed Hadi, 1983: 117. M eanw hile, sam pling t echnique is a t echnique t hat is used by t he researcher t o select sam ples out of t he dat a Hadi, 1983: 75.
According t o Surakhm ad 1994: 100, t ot al sam pling is a t echnique in w hich t he w hole dat a becom es t he sam ple. Thus, t he t ot al sam pling t echnique is used in t his
research. The researcher t ook all t he dialogues cont aining ut t erances of com plaint expressed by t he charact ers in t he film ent it led Sex and t he Cit y as t he sam ple of t he
research.
D. Equipments of the Research
According t o Lincoln and Guba in Sut opo 2006:36, t he m ost im port ant equipm ent in qualit at ive research is t he researcher him self, since hum an being are
considered t o have t he abilit y of reaching and deciding t he meaning of various int eract ions.
lxiv In t his research, t he researcher needs som e support ing equipment s t o collect
t he dat a. The equipm ent s are a set of com put er, t he script of t he film , and t he VCD of t he film ent it led Sex and t he Cit y.
E. Technique of Collecting Data
There are som e st eps t o collect dat a in t his research: 1. Wat ching t he film “ Sex and t he Cit y” for several t im es.
2. Searching for t he script of t he film in t he int ernet , 3. Com paring t he script and t he dialogue of t he film .
4. Taking not es on all of t he ut t erances w hich cont ain com plaint expression in t he dialogue.
5. Taking all of t he ut t erances cont aining com plaint expression as t he dat a of t he research.
6. Classifying t he dat a based on t he t ype of com plaint st rat egy. 7. Giving t he codes for each dat um .
