B. DISCUSSION

Characteristics of Respondents

Characteristics of respondents by age

Characteristics of respondents by age showed the highest distribution was 22-30 years as many as 46 nurses (60%), the next 31-40 years as many as 25 nurses (32%) and 41-50 years as many as 6 nurses (8%). Age distribution of respondents by Erikson (Wong, 2009) classified in young adulthood. Hasibuan (2003), argues that the individual age affects the physical, mental, ability to work, responsibility, and tend attendance. Employees were age older less physical condition, but it works resilient, and have a greater responsibility.

The results of the Rudianti (2011).that nurses aged <32 years have not so good performance compared with nurses aged ≥32 years. Results of the study revealed that the characteristics of the nurses by age greatly affect the performance of nursing practice, where the older the nurse then accepting a job will be more responsible and experienced. Increasing age increases wisdom is one's ability to make decisions, rational thinking, emotional control, and tolerate the views of others, and therefore contributes to

(10)

6

increased performance. Conversely, for nurses aged <32 years have less performance in accordance with what is expected from the hospital that illustrates the need for attention to do the development. Development and ongoing guidance to the nurses needed to improve the capabilities and responsibilities of nurses, although still young age (Wahyudi, et al., 2010).

Characteristics of Respondents by Gender

Characteristics of respondents by sex showed the highest distribution are women as much as 52 nurses (67%) and men by 25 nurses (33%). The sex of the respondents in this study are more women than men, it is in accordance with the early history of the nursing profession which starts from Florence Nightingale who initially as work based love of a mother or a woman. This situation allows women a better performance than men (Ade, 2009).

Characteristics of respondents by Education

Characteristics of respondents according to education shows the highest distribution is D-III Health as many as 71 nurses (92%) and the remaining S1 Nursing as 6 nurses (8%). Sadiman (2002) states that people who have higher education will have a higher knowledge, when compared with those who had low education and through education one can improve intellectual maturity so that they can make decisions in the act.

Characteristics of respondents indicated that the respondents' education level is good. Education which has been pursued by nurses provide knowledge not only directly with the implementation of the task, but also a foundation to develop themselves as well as the ability to use all the means that are around us to smooth the task. Highly educated nursing staff motivations would be better because it already has the knowledge and insight that is broader than the less educated nurses.

Characteristics of respondents according to length of working

Characteristics of respondents by length of employment showed the highest distribution is 1-5 years as many as 47 nurses (61%), the next 6-10 years as many as 17 nurses (22%), and more than 10 years as many as 13 nurses (17%). The tenure of the old nurse was working a nurse working in the hospital since early works up to a nurse stopped working. The tenure of the nurse with regard to his experience. Nurses who have long worked would have had a variety of experiences related to their respective fields (Ismani, 2007).

Some research suggests that nurses working period related to the ability of nurses in performing their duties. Research Maghribi (2011) examined the relationship between working life with work motivation. The study concluded that there is a long relationship working with the motivation to work where the longer the better nurse work motivation. This condition indicates that nurses with tenure of less than 32 years old has relatively been fulfilled expectations because not have high demands compared with long tenure (Rusmianingsih, 2012).

Knowledge of Quality Services

The frequency distribution of the nurse's knowledge of the quality of nursing care hospitals showed the highest distribution is high as many as 65 nurses (84%) and were as much as 12 nurses (16%). Actually, it is proper respondents who are nurses have sufficient knowledge and competency of nursing. Several

(11)

7

factors are driving knowledge among others, are nurses working experience demonstrated by nurses working time.

Distribution of working time nurses though ditinjukkan mostly between 1-5 years, but most of them have worked between 2-3 years. Long working relationship with the nurse's knowledge as expressed by Nursalam (2003) people who work longer have more experience than people who have worked / did not work, so the more knowledge. The nursing profession is a job that requires experience or learning enough to ripen the skill of nursing nurse, future nurse work is also one of the factors that may affect the nurse's knowledge, if a nurse has a working lives long enough will have more knowledge about quality nursing services.

4. CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS A. CONCLUSIONS

Knowledge of the quality of nursing care in hospital nursing PKU Muhammadiyah Surakarta based study shows that nurses with education D-III Nursing and Nursing S1 both have knowledge of high quality nursing care.
