• TO-4 Specification oils are single viscosity grade. Synthetic Base Stock Oils
Synthetic base oils are acceptable for use in Caterpillar engines and in Caterpillar machines if these oils meet the performance requirements that are specified for a
particular compartment. Each compartment has lubrication requirements and lubrication specifications in order to ensure proper lubrication and life of the system.
Synthetic base oils generally perform better than conventional oils in the following two areas:
• Synthetic base oils have improved viscosity at low temperatures especially in arctic conditions.
• Synthetic base oils have improved oxidation stability especially at high operating temperatures.
Some synthetic base oils have performance characteristics that enhance the service life of the oil. However, Caterpillar does not recommend automatic extending of the oil
drain intervals for any type of oil. Oil drain intervals for Caterpillar diesel engines can only be adjusted after an oil analysis program that contains the following tests:
• Oil condition and wear metal analysis Caterpillar SOS Oil Analysis • Trend analysis
• Fuel consumption • Oil consumption

Caterpillar Hydraulic Oil HYDO
Caterpillar Hydraulic Oil is formulated with a balanced additive system. The system includes the following agents: detergents, rust inhibitors, antiwear agents and
defoamers. Caterpillar Hydraulic Oil offers protection against mechanical wear, against rusting, and against corrosive wear in hydraulic systems and in hydrostatic
transmission systems. Caterpillar Hydraulic Oil should be used to achieve maximum life and maximum performance from hydraulic system components and from
hydrostatic transmissions. Caterpillar Hydraulic Oil is recommended in most hydraulic systems and in most hydrostatic systems.
• Caterpillar Hydraulic Oil If a different viscosity is required due to ambient temperatures, the following Caterpillar
oils can be used: • Caterpillar Multigrade Diesel Engine Oil DEO
• Caterpillar Single Grade Diesel Engine Oil DEO • Caterpillar TransmissionDrive Train Oil TDTO
• Caterpillar Multipurpose Tractor Oil MTO Commercial Oils
If Caterpillar oils cannot be used, the following commercial classifications can be used in hydraulic systems and in hydrostatic transmission systems:
• CG-4 engine oils that have a minimum zinc additive of 0.09 percent 900 ppm • CF-4 engine oils that have a minimum zinc additive of 0.09 percent 900 ppm
• CF engine oils that have a minimum zinc additive of 0.09 percent 900 ppm • Premium industrial hydraulic oils that have passed the Vickers vane pump test.
35VQ25 • Premium industrial hydraulic oils that have a minimum zinc additive of 0.09 percent
900 ppm Caterpillar machine hydraulic systems are designed to operate on diesel engine oils.
Premium industrial hydraulic oils can be used if the oils meet the listed pump performance. Premium industrial hydraulic oils must have antiwear additives, antifoam
additives, antirust additives, and antioxidation additives for heavy-duty use. Heavy-duty use must be recommended by the oil supplier. An ISO viscosity grade of 32 or 46 is
recommended for most applications.

Caterpillar Biodegradable Hydraulic Oil HEES
Caterpillar has a biodegradable hydraulic oil that is available for use in machine hydraulic systems. This fluid is recommended for the hydraulic systems when
environmental compliance is required or desired. Machines with this symbol are filled with biodegradable hydraulic oil. This symbol is
located on the hydraulic tank. This fluid is formulated from a saturated HEES Hydraulic Environmental Ester
Synthetic synthetic base stock and selected additives. Use this oil only in hydraulic systems. Do not use the oil in compartments with brakes and clutches. BIO HYDO
HEES is recommended for operation at tank temperatures of -32 to 100°C -25 to 212°F . While the oil is in the specified range of temperatures, the oil has a viscosity
that is similar to SAE 10W or to ISO VG 46. Caterpillar BIO HYDO HEES may become darker in color throughout the service life
of the oil. Analysis is required to determine the quality of the oil. The maximum recommended water content for hydraulic systems that are filled with
Caterpillar BIO HYDO HEES is 0.10. If the water levels exceed 0.10, the water should be removed or the oil should be replaced.
Consult your Caterpillar dealer for additional information on this product and on the potential use.
COMMERCIAL BIODEGRADABLE HYDRAULIC OIL
CG-4- CG-4 is the newest heavy-duty category of diesel oil. CG-4 oils can be used in
Caterpillar diesel engines in place of recommended CF-4 oils. CG-4 oils provide improved cleanliness of the piston, improved viscosity control, and improved
crankcase cleanliness, especially when oil soot is a problem. Although CG-4 oils were primarily developed for diesel engines that operate on 0.05 percent sulfur diesel fuel,
CG-4 oils can be used with higher sulfur fuels. The new oil TBN determines the maximum fuel sulfur level for CG-4 and CF-4 oils. Refer to the topic Total Base
Number TBN and Fuel Sulfur Levels for Caterpillar Direct Injection Diesel Engines in this document for more information. CG-4 oils should also be used in engines that
have hydraulically actuated fuel injection pumps. CG-4 oils are the first oils that passed tests for foam control and for viscosity shear loss. CG-4 oils must also pass recently
developed tests for metal corrosion, tests for wear, and tests for oxidation.
CF-4- CF-4 oils service a wide variety of modern diesel engines. This classification of
oil was developed with 0.40 percent sulfur diesel fuel. The fuel that is used in the CF-4 tests is the type of diesel fuels that is commonly available worldwide. CF-4 oils provide
improved piston deposit control and improved oil control when CF-4 oils are compared to CE oils. CF-4 oils also provide improved soot dispersancy when these oils are
compared to CF oils.
Note: Single grade CF oils or multigrade CF oils are not recommended for current
Caterpillar diesel engines in Caterpillar machines.

Consult your Caterpillar dealer for the latest oil recommendations. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual, Lubricant Viscosities.
Some commercial oils that meet the API specifications may require shortened oil change intervals. The oil change intervals are determined by monitoring the oil
conditions. The oil change intervals are also determined by wear metal analysis. The Caterpillar SOS Oil Analysis Program is preferred.
