B. Research Setting
This part will describe the time and the place of conducting this investigation. There were two different questionnaires distributed to two different
samples. The first questionnaire on the occurrence of English idioms was distributed on Wednesday, April 10, 2013 to some of semester four students of
ELESP. It took place at Sanata Dharma University. The follow-up step was an interview which was conducted on Wednesday and Friday, April 17 and 19, 2013.
The interview was conducted regarding the confirmation of the responses on the first questionnaire. Besides, it was also used to examine the clarity of the answers
given by the participants. The second questionnaire was aimed to find out major strategies used by
semester four students of ELESP in processing the meanings of English idioms and to see how certain strategies can lead them to the intended meanings. This
questionnaire was administered to larger samples of the population because the results would be used to answer the main research problems. It was distributed on
Wednesday, April 24, 2013 at Sanata Dharma University. The second interview was also conducted to have better understanding on the responses on the second
questionnaire and it was held on Thursday, June 13, 2013 to some of the participants. The setting of this research can be displayed in the following table.

C. Research Participants
In the previous part, it has been explained that survey research does not acquire the researcher to collect data from all of the population because the nature
of survey is enabling the researcher to make some generalizations. Hence, it can be done by choosing the samples. To accommodate the main purposes of this
study, semester four students of ELESP were chosen as the population and 40 semester four students were selected as the samples. They were chosen because
the researcher considered that they were sufficient to be the participants in this research. Besides, the researcher also had some reasons: 1 they have been
studying English at ELESP for almost two years – it can be inferred that their
English ability is adequate for this investigation, 2 their average age was 20 - meaning to say that they have been able to think independently being able to
decide the strategies by themselves, 3 the last, it is considered important to investigate their ability to process the meanings of English idioms because they
have taken the basic courses such as structure, listening, reading, speaking, writing which later this ability will be applied to the main courses in ELESP.
However, not all of the semester four students can be the participants in this study. The researcher used what is called by random sampling. Random
sampling is one of the techniques which aim to collect data by choosing some
49 over all data randomly Fraenkel Wallen, 2008, p.476. Hence, the researcher
chose the participants randomly. To gather the data of the first questionnaire and the first interview, 10 of semester four students were chosen. By doing so, the
researcher could determine the materials which would be used to compose the second questionnaire which would be distributed to larger samples. In distributing
the second questionnaire, the 30 students were selected as the participants and seven of them were chosen to be the subjects in the second interview.
The total number of participants in the study were 40 students 10 males and 30 females studying at the English Language Education Study Program in
Sanata Dharma University. The respondents were divided into two groups. The first group which consisted of 10 respondents was meant for the first
questionnaire and the first interview while the second group which consisted of 30 pariticipants was meant for the second questionnaire and the second interview.
