Anne Boleyn tries so hard to get her ambition comes true. She is nothing but a woman who mastered by ambition of materialism in order to have power and rising her social
class. Although she tries so hard to overcoming her dream all that she got just hatred from other people, loneliness, misery and death to herself.
Ambition also corrupts a sense of human in her life. He becomes very greedy, selfish, self-centered, shameless, too proud of herself and never think about other
people’s life even it is her own family. Anne turns into beast which ready to use people as her dolls and tools to get what she wants. Bu until the end of her life she
never ever feels the benefits of being ambitious and materialist. Although she become what she wants to be a Queen of England, but it never pleased her. All that she got is
just misery and ended with death.
4.2. The Impact of Anne Boleyn’s Materialism to the Other Major Character George Boleyn
a. Incest
Every human is an economic creature. The goal of economic efforts is the satisfaction of human needs. Every human require at least a minimum of clothes,
clothing and housing. All physical needs are basic and those things are materials. In the other word, every human is a materialistic creature since they need material as the
essential for human survival. But most people prefer variety and many flavor in their food, a comfortable shelter and brand new clothes to wear. People start to concern
with desire that go far away beyond the necessities for physical survival. Human start to behave and think based on material effort to get material success in their life to get
happiness and satisfaction. That is the definition of material oriented.

When people are consciously or they do not have material oriented in their life, they will start to lose their humanity because they only care about material
matters. An idea that if someone gets material success, they will live happy and can get everything they want since they can buy anything. But it is not everybody can
have material success to get better living. In
The Other Boleyn Girl material success is not all just about things you can buy, but also the pride you will get if you have a higher social class. People like d
they like to get respect by other people and to control other people by giving them such an order, like a landowner to his slaves. And to be in this position they have to
gain more and more material things because this is the matter of all. Even though they are rich enough, if they don’t have any position in society they still can’t control as
mush as they want. Since the novel is based on the early of 16

century, the king and the queen do take an apart in social control. They are the one who decided whose deserve a position
in society such as Duke, Lord and other position. And this position makes people have a higher control in society because they have a higher social class. Many people
would die to this position, and they could do anything to get it. Event it is against their own heart and rational and against moral values.
Moral values appear in the society as the direction to create the well ordered of harmony living. Even though some moral values in a society may be different from
other but the purpose of it is just the same. People who live in the society should follow it to unity of regularity. It is a direction that leads human into a better person, a
dignity as a human being. When human hold on the moral values, they will be a good person with strong moral values as the rule to control the life. In the other hand since

human has material oriented in their mind, they will do anything to get it include breaking the rule of moral values.
In The Other Boleyn Girl, there is a character that could do anything to get
what she wants in order to fulfill her ambition of materialism, she is Anne Boleyn. This materialistic girl can use anything even anyone to provide her a softer way to get
what she wants. Everything is just about fulfilling her ambition even it has to against moral values, such as incest.
Incest is sexual intercourse between close relatives that is either illegal in the jurisdiction where it takes place or socially

incest with her own brother George Boleyn. Since Anne can not giving an heir to Henry and he already loses his desires to
Anne, Anne tries so hard to figure out how to have a son without getting laid with her husband. She is just too afraid that she will lose Henry and it will ruin everything.
She laughed, a shrill bitter laugh. “It will be the death of me, one way or another. For if I let out one word that this is
the second baby I’ve failed to carry, then I am thrown aside and ruined. Wham am I to do?” TOBG p, 539
Anne tries to find out how to get a healthy baby by not get laid with her own husband. Because Anne and George believe that this is not all her faults. Why she can
not carry a baby since Elizabeth is because Henry is impotent. Its not all because of her.
“But he can’t make a son” George shouted. “He couldn’t make a son on Katherine, he can not make one on her. He Is
all but impotent That’s why she has been going mad with fear…” TOBG p, 595
From the quotation above it can be concluded that George actually tries to make an escape for Anne. He loves her sister very much, and can not see her entirely

everyday on fear. Moreover this is actually just a reason to make a mistake. It is natural that a person will make a reason in order to make a sin. He keeps trying to
deny that he is a sinner. By making a son with his sister, it is a very big sin. And he makes a reason that Henry is impotent as an escape for not being blamed and not
feeling guilty. Actually Gregory is not showing clearly about the incest between Anne and
George at the very beginning. She lets us guess what actually happened to both of them. Even Mary as the narrator of the novel doesn’t know what comes through Anne
and George. “He should be strong.” She said. “No one knows what went
into the making of his baby, Mary. No one will ever know.” TOBG p, 561
Anne and George know exactly that what they did is a very big mistake. They will never let even a person know what they did. Because it worth very expensive, if
someone stated guilty for being incest in the early of 16

, then death punishment will come after them.
This is where ambition brings fearless to Anne. Anything as long as it can fulfill her needs, a long as she is safe to be the Queen of England she will do it. Anne
becomes fearless and more human less than before. She is ready to face for anything it takes including death. Anne already lost her mind.
She laughed shortly. “Oh yes. Draw your hem back from my mud, little sister. But I have dared things for my country
that you could only dream of” TOBG p, 561

. Gregory tries to reveal the affair between Anne and George time by time, little by a little. Like in a letter Anne sent to Mary. Although it is not very clear sated
that they have making a child or at least have an affair, but it can be seen through further analysis.
…..The baby should be born next summer and we will all safe again. Tell no one- not even William. It must be a
secret until a late a possible in case of any mishap. Only George knows, and now you. I will not ell the king until I
am past my third month. I have a good reason this time to think that the baby will be strong. Pray for me. TOBG p,

By saying that “Only George knows” it can be guessed that there is something already happened during the making of the baby. Anne also added “I have a good
reason this time to think that the baby will be strong”, it can be concluded that she was not with Henry in making the baby. Because she and George believe that Henry
is impotent and could not give her a son nr a strong one. George knows that it is all wrong what she had done with Anne. He is just a
victim of Anne’s materialistic side and his love to his sister is used by Anne to use him. Even when he knows that they finally made a child, George feels very guilty.
I was expecting to see his joy bi I saw something else; a shadow crossed his face. It was how George looked when
he had done something bad. It was George guilty look. It flashed through his eyes so fast that I was hardly certain
that I had seen it, but for a moment I knew with absolute certainty that his conscience is not clear, and I guessed that
Anne had taken him as her companion on her journey to the gates of hell to conceive this child to England. TOBG p,

From the last statement of the quotation it can get a clear understanding that Anne is using George to fulfill her needs. George is just a tool for Anne in making her
dream comes true. It hurt George, but Anne never thinks about it. Her materialistic

turns her into beast. She no longer cares what George feels about what they have done. She doesnt care although it brings misery to George, her own brother.
But no matter how hard they tried to hide it, as soon as possible it will be revealed. Anne loses the baby again. And when they saw the dead baby, it is not look
like a human but more looks like a monster. “It is a monster The woman said. “A monster” TOBG p, 589
The setting
of The Other Boleyn Girl is the early of 16

century. There was a time where people tend to believe in magic, cursed and witches. People are very faith
in God so when they see something weird they might think that it is all because of sin. By seeing Anne’s dead baby which more look like a monster, people become
suspicious with her, and believe that she must doing something very sinful before. “They would be saying that she must have some sin on her
soul, some dealing with the devil or some witchcraft” he said flatly. “Don’t rail at me Mary. It is what you would say
yourself, I was just thinking perhaps she should confess, or go on a pilgrimage, or wash her conscience clear. I don’t
know, how can I know? I don’t even want to know. But she must have done something gravely wrong, mustn’t she?

This issue at last arrived on the King. But he is no longer surprised because since the beginning he already suspicious with Anne. He already sent his spy to watch
over Anne. And the most shocking is his spy is a witch-taking, so he himself believes that Anne is a witch.
“Don’t you know that I am his servant already? That he sent me here to watch and listen for him? I was appointed for
this from the moment that he queen first missed her courses.” TOBG p, 591
“Witch-taking” she said simply. TOBG p, 591 This is the beginning where the king can no longer wait for the reality. He
searches it by himself. He orders people to interview everyone who have connection

to Anne, George and her family. And at last the interviewer come to Jane Parker who already disappointed with George since the very beginning because he always spent
nights with Anne and that’s make her suspicious.
“Your wife will talk.” I warned him. “Already she says that you’re always here.” TOBG p, 581
And no wonder Jane’s disappointed to George bring devastation to George’s life. Jane confessed that George is always with Anne in her chamber. And that is more
than enough to become evidence to under arrested George.
George, speaking on his sacred oath, fell silent: he could not deny it. The strongest evidence against him was a
statement written by Jane Parker, the wife he had always despised. TOBG p, 654
This is the end of George Boleyn’s life. He is executed for being in love with his sister.
“Anne is being charged with seducing the king with sorcery. Your brother is said to have helped her. That is
why their trials are to be done separately. Forgive me that I didn’t tell you it all at once. It’s not the sort of news I like
to bring to my wife with her dinner. They are accused of being lovers, and of summoning the devil. They’re being
tried separately not because they will be excused, but their crimes are too great to heard in one sitting.” TOBG p, 647
He was accused, as the other man had been, of being her lover and plotting against the king. TOBG p, 654
Anne’s ambition of materialistic is not just leads her to a misery but also other people, in this case George. Anne Boleyn using the love which is given by her brother
to fulfill her dream. What kind of person that can do such thing. Anne Boleyn uses everything to support her ambition, even if it is her own brother’s love. Materialism
really corrupts human’s side of Anne; she is just like a human without a heart no

feeling. And what she got from all of it? Nothing but misery. But the worse part it is, she also make other people in to that misery. And poor George he ended with death.
