15 CHAPTER IV ANALYSIS AND FINDING

4.1 Data Analysis

After collecting the data from the movie script, 169 utterances of Jack Sparrow that fulfill the criteria of illocutionary act had been found. The utterances are analyzed to determine the classifications of Illocutionary act. There are five classifications of Illocutionary act;they are Directive, Commissive, Representative, Declarative, and Expressive.

4.1.1 Directive Illocutionary act 1.

“How could it be that two upstanding gentlemen such as yourselves did not merit an invitation?” ANALYSIS: The utterance is classified into directive illocutionary act because there is an intended meaning to be delivered by the speaker in the form of suggestion. Jack and two guards of a dock are the participants involved in aconversation where Jack as the speaker and the guards as the hearers. When the utterance occurred, Jack was intercepted by the guards when he was passing a dock so he tried to deceive them by telling that there was a ceremony in a fort which was not far from the dock. The purpose of the utterance was toput forward consideration for the guards to join the ceremony in the fort. 2. “Will you be saving her then?” ANALYSIS: The utterance is classified into Directive illocutionary act because there is an intended meaning to be delivered by the speaker in the form of request. Jack and two guards of a dock are the participants involved in aconversation where Jack as the speaker and the guards as the hearers. When the utterance occurred, Jack and the guards were talking in a dock when suddenly they were surprised by a 16 woman who was drowning into the sea. The purpose of the utterance was toask the guards politely to rescue the drowning woman.

3. “Do not lose these”

ANALYSIS: The utterance is classified into Directive illocutionary act because there is an intended meaning to be delivered by the speaker in the form of order. Jack and two guards of a dock are the participants involved in aconversation where Jack as the speaker and the guards as the hearers. When the utterance occurred, Jack and the guards were talking in a dock when suddenly they were surprised by a woman who was drowning into the sea. Jack asked the guards to rescue the woman but they refused it so he decided to rescue her himself. Before jack dived into the sea to rescue the drowning woman he gave his equipments to the guards. The purpose of the utterance was togive the guards an instruction to keep Jack’s equipments safe when he was rescuing the drowning woman.

4. “Move”

ANALYSIS: The utterance is classified into Directive illocutionary act because there is an intended meaning to be delivered by the speaker in the form of order. Jack and two guards of a dock are the participants involved in aconversation where Jack as the speaker and the guards as the hearers. When the utterance occurred, Jack had saved a woman from drowning in the sea and took her back to the dock with help of one of the guards. The woman was unconscious so Jack tried to wake her up. The purpose of the utterance was togive the guards an instruction to give Jack space so he could wake the woman up.
