3.TRANSGENDER’S LANGUAGE IN MEDAN 3.1 Transgender Language in Medan

A lot of people who do not know and understand about this community languages except transgender community. Basically, Social Life is human interaction using the symbols. The statement is in accordance with reality because when we interact consciously or not, There are symbols that represent ourselves such as, how to speak, dialect that is used, Intonation in determining the spoken words and style of dress. All the symbols to represent something that is intended by the communicator. Symbol or emblem that is used is the result of mutual agreement show something for example, word kata “duta” for transgender it means money, and the word "cumi-cumi" means kiss.

Some people said that, the transgender’s language has actually been around since the 1980’s but at the time was called slang (okem). Then, the language is adopted and then modified so unique, and is used by some people or just certain circles. At the first time, slang is used by the thugs who their lives near the violence, crimes, drugs, and alcohol. A lot of new terms that they had created with the aim that ordinary people or outside from their community do not understand what they are talking about or they have to discussed. They designed the new words, replace the word to opposite, search for words matching, determine the numbers, replacement of phoneme, addition of prefix, insert, or suffix. Intercommunication among transgender or transgender recognize what is called “budaya teman sebaya (peer culture)”. The peer culture of transgender who generally has a value and characteristics of culture different or even contrary

to the culture of others. In their efforts to separate themselves from the culture of the surrounding environment, they are making counter-culture, distinctive culture of transgender (Alatas, 2006:59).

The distinctive cultural of transgender then creating a common language is used by transgender to communicate with each other. The language was then called slang of language, accordance with the interpretation, initially the language is used for friends and friendship in the community (KBBI, 2008:296). In circles of transgender, word of 'slang' has prestige or high valuation.

A transgender person would say “gaul” if he has a interesting properties, and wide relationship. So, a transgender person would feel proud if the predicate of “Anak gaul” attached to him. but along with the inclusion of The of transgender variety of languages into environment celebrities, which was brought by transgender community which almost the majority of work as a makeup artist, One of people that I was interview about slang of language of transgender who had once to Jakarta because of his profession as an makeup artist. Little by little people's judgment changed against of variety of transgender languages. The public perception, especially urban society that an artist is an idol, carrier of trend, and has wide relationship making public, especially circles of young people are competing imitate what is being done by their favorite artist, including using language which they are use in in order to communicate they are also regarded as sociable and are not obsolete. It is then triggers the alternation secret names of variety of languages among transgender. The language comes from the the transgender in Medan city , which is being introduced by transgender community

which is in Medan.The language has been changed into slang of language which was introduced by an artist, namely Debby Sahertian which was always use the language when she appeared on TV. The language is very easy to learn the language, it does not take long time to understand, we should use the language frequently . The transgender language has changed a lot. For example, transgender say word of "Aku" is “ the word change become "Akika". But, now there is word of "Eyke" and "Akikuk" to mention "I". There is also word of "meal" that we know is derived from the name of city in Indonesia, namely "Makassar", but now there is added with newly word namely "Makarena", “Makarena” and “Makarizo”. That’s why, transgender language that was first there was in Medan have differences with transgender language now.

Based on table 1 was obtained that the language of transgender can be formed from the language used by the general public. But the language is given a different meaning from the true meaning. Based on the table above formation of transgender language is taken from the name of city and the country names. It can be seen from the word of Tuban, Lumajang, sibolga, Payakumbuh, Belanda, Maluku, Makasar and Malaysia. The names of city and the country was given special meaning by transgender. The meaning is only known by transgender community only. Relationship between the word and meaning of the word. Relationship can be seen of form the word of Tuban is understood as “Old'. The meaning of “Tua” derived from the word of Tuban which is omitted the consonants / b / and / n / to become “Tua”. Relationships like this is also seen in the word of Maluku, it meant “Malu” , Malaysia is meant “Malas”. Relation of Lumajang with meaning “Lumayan” is happened because the similarity of the pronunciation of both the words. Because the consonants / j / Lumajang word in the phonologically have related to the consonants / y / in “Lumayan” words. that are the consonants / n / in words of "Lumayan" are phonologically like this is also close to the consonants / ng / in Lumajang words.

Based on Table 2, the formation of transgender language can be spoken by using noun. The above forms are created by the community with the aim of other communities do not understand the communication made by their communities. in addition, not all of nouns are used as the language of transgender there are words that does have match to be a transgender language, it could have been taken through the beginning of the word, for example It can be seen from the word “sajadah” if we take the prefix of the word, it will change the meaning to be “saja” or in English is only or just.

Based on Table 3, the formation of transgender language can be spoken by adding certain syllables of the origin words . It is seen from the data of words apose was given meaning “Apa” , Simatria was given meaning “Mata”, Sepiring was given meaning “Sepi”, Apose comes from the word apo + se, simatria comes from the words mata si + tri, Sepiring comes from word sepi + ring.

Whereas, the words of sigan, siban, siben, silem, patterns of word formation are different from the pattern of words apase, simatria, dan sepiring. Patterns of word formation sigan, siban, silem. are to take the initial syllable added with the ‘ si’ which is placed at the beginning of words.

Supposedly originated in Medan and then spread in all the cities of Indonesia. This type of retention form of syllables or parts of syllables beginning of word base, while the rest is converted so as if the other words.

This is the type of the 1990s was very popular, growing rapidly and spread all over the archipelago, and then used as slang. This language is usually used when transgender people in order to communicate what they are talking about is not known to others outside the community.

4.CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTION 4.1 Conclusion

General language which is used by community, but transgender more develop the general language, such as changing the meaning of the words that have been there and to be random and transgender is more develop the general language by adding particular syllables or change the final sound of words. The language that is used in the transgender community has a different meaning with meaning of the word real. to form a sense of identity and solidarity in the transgender community.

Factors that influence the use of language is as a means of expressing identification transgender community, therefore give a sense of identity and solidarity in the transgender community. While the function of the language is to form the identity of transgender and a sense of solidarity in the transgender community. Moreover, the transgender language as a means of disclosure of transgender sexuality activity.

4.2 Suggestion

Transgender’s language is not only a transgender could only be learned by the transgender community, language is not only a transgender could only be learned by the transgender community. especially for young people and teenagers, because at this time the transgender's language has become a trend of slang, with some addition new words is more fresh. so, there is nothing wrong, if we learn this language.

2. THE REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE 2.1 Definition of Language

Language can be defined as a means to deliver something that comes in the heart. it means that the language as an instrument to deliver thoughts, ideas, concepts or feelings to be conveyed to others.

Keraf (1997:1) says, “Bahasa adalah alat komunikasi antara anggota masyarakat berupa simbol bunyi yang dihasilkan oleh alat ucap manusia.” that language is placed as a means of communication between people to express their thoughts or feeling by using the symbols the form communication by voice, gestures (posture), or signs of writing.

Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia (KBBI, 1990: 66) says, “Bahasa diartikan sebagai sistem lambang bunyi berartikulasi yang bersifat sewenang-wenang dan konvensional yang dipakai sebagai alat komunikasi untuk melahirkan perasaan dan pikiran.” that language is placed as a means of communication between people to express their thoughts or feeling by using the symbols the form communication by voice, gestures (posture), or signs of writing.

Kridalaksana (1993:21) says, “Bahasa sebagai sebuah sistem lambang bunyi yang arbitrer, yang dipergunakan oleh para anggota suatu masyarakat untuk bekerja sama, berinteraksi, dan mengidentifikasikan diri.” Pei dan Gaynor (1975:119) says, “ Language is bahasa adalah A system of communication by sound, i.e., through the organs of speech and hearing, among human beings of certain group or community, using vocal symbols possessing

arbitrary conventional meaning.“ From the view of the linguist like Kridalaksana, Pei and Gaynor above, Language can emphasized as a symbol system. The term system contains the meaning existence and regularity of the constituent elements.

Rakhmat (1992:269) says, a communications expert, look at the language of the two sides of the formal and functional. Formally, “Bahasa diartikan sebagai semua kalimat yang terbayangkan, yang dibuat menurut tatabahasa.” While formally, “Bahasa diartikan sebagai alat yang dimiliki bersama untuk mengungkapkan gagasan.” Definition that is supposed by Rakhmat seemed try to summarize common meaning by linguists opinion. The term of formal side presented by Rakhmat similar to the term system, whereas the functional sides of the same with language as a communication device.

Wardhaugh, says language is “A System of aribtrary vocal symbols used for human communication.” Broader depiction of the language ever was delivered by the father of modern linguistics, Ferdinan de Saussure. He explains the language by using the three-term langage, Langue and parole. The third terms of the French language in Indonesian paired with only one term, namely “language”. Langage is the system symbol of the sound that is used to communicate and interact verbally. This langage is abstract. Term of langue refers to system symbol of particular sound that is used by a member of particular social group. Whereas parole is the concrete form of langue is used in form of speech or utterances by members of the public with each other.

Fodor (1974) says,“Bahasa adalah system simbol dan tanda. “ The meaning of a symbol system is a symbol of the relationship with the conventional

meaning. While the definition of system of signs that a relationship is not conventional signs and meanings, but is determined by the nature or particular characteristics possessed of objects or situation referred. In a word Indonesian cecak has a causal relationship with animals. it means, the animal is called cecak because his voice sounds like cak-cak-cak. Therefore, cecak is called sign not a symbol. Fodor further said that language problems are problems of meaning.

Bolinger (1981) says, “Bahasa memiliki system fonem, yang terbentuk dari distinctive features bunyi, system morfem dan sintaksis. Untuk mengungkapkan makna bahasa harus berhubungan dengan dunia luar.” The meaning of Dunia Luar is a world outside the world of languages including speakers themselves. World within the meaning like this is called reality. It means that the relationship between reality and language. While reality includes everything that is beyond language. Reality is probably manifested in the form of abstract language, because there is no language without meaning. While, meaning is the result of the relationship of language and reality.

Felicia (2001:1) says, “Bahasa merupakan alat yang digunakan untuk berkomunikasi sehari-hari, baik bahasa lisan maupun bahasa tulis.” It means the spoken, communication made by two or more persons who each other face to face directly and no spacing or limiting their equipment. The spoken is happens when two or more people talking / dialogue, during interview, meeting, speech. While writing, communication is done through writing without talks directly in a language that brief, Clear, and understandable to the recipient. Written communications may include letters, text messages, electronic mail, and so on.

Sunaryo (2000:6) says, “Bahasa didalam struktur budaya ternyata memiliki kedudukan, fungsi dan peran ganda yaitu sebagai akar dan produk budaya yang sekaligus berfungsi sebagai sarana berfikir dan sarana pendukung pertumbuhan dan perkembangan ilmu pengetahuan dan teknologi.” It means is without language (including Indonesian) science can not grow and thrive. Moreover, in the structure of Indonesian culture, it has a position, functions, and the dual role that is as root and cultural products that also functions as a means of thinking and means of supporting growth and development of science and technology. Without such blemish language role, Science and technology will not be evolve. The implication in the development of thinking power, infrastructure to make language as modern thinking. Therefore, if meticulously in using language, We will be meticulously in thinking anyway because language is a mirror of the power of reason (mind).

Owen says, “Language can be defined as a socially shared combinations of those symbols and rule governed combinations of those symbols.” It means that the language can be defined as a socially acceptable code or conventional systems to deliver concepts through the use of symbols and the desired combination of symbols that are arranged by the provisions.

Tarigan (1989:4), he gives two definitions of language. “Pertama, bahasa adalah suatu sistem yang sistematis, barang kali juga untuk sistem generatif. Kedua, bahasa adalah seperangkat lambang-lambang mana suka atau simbol-simbol arbitrer.” Systematic is that language is composed according to a pattern that is not arranged randomly or arbitrary. While systemic means that

language is not a single system, but also consist of sub-systems or subordinate system, such as sub-system phonology, morphological subsystem, subsystem syntactic, semantic subsystems. Then, each elements of the subsystems are also arranged according to the rules or a particular pattern, the overall form a system. If did not arranged according to rules or particular patterns, Meanwhile, arbitrary defined as the absence of a direct relationship is compulsory between symbol with which it symbolism. In other words, the relationship between language and form of the object only based on the agreement between the speakers of the language in the language is concerned.

Santoso (1990:1) says, “Bahasa adalah rangkaian bunyi yang dihasilkan oleh alat ucap manusia secara sadar.” It means, the words are come out of a human mouth every day to communicate to inflict feelings and thoughts which will be disclosed to the other person.

Wibowo (2001:3) says, “Bahasa adalah sistem simbol bunyi yang bermakna dan berartikulasi (dihasilkan oleh alat ucap) yang bersifat arbitrer dan konvensional, yang dipakai sebagai alat berkomunikasi oleh sekelompok manusia untuk melahirkan perasaan dan pikiran.” The same with Walija (1996:4) says, “Bahasa ialah komunikasi yang paling lengkap dan efektif untuk menyampaikan ide, pesan, maksud, perasaan dan pendapat kepada orang lain.” It means, the language as a series of sound. in this case, we are using the sound as a means to communicate, communication by using the sound is also called verbal communication and human society with the sound communication tool is called

verbal community. Language is a symbol of a series of the sound which is form a certain sense. Series of the sound are we know as the word represents a particular object. The human are collecting these symbols and compose a vocabulary the accumulation of experience and their thoughts. This is what causes namely language continues to developing due to the experience human thought are also growing. The existence of symbols that allows people to think and learn better. So, the language is not only human beings can think regularly but also can communicate what we are thinking to others, also language we are can express our feelings and attitudes.

Puspitasari (2002) says, language is considered as a system that contains the meaning way or the rules. System means that regular arrangement pattern to form an overall that is systematic, which means language is not structured according to a random pattern. System means that language is not a single system. it means that the language has a lot of systems that are used as instruments or symbols to communicate.

Syamsuddin (1986:2) says, “Bahasa memiliki dua pengertian. Pertama, bahasa adalah alat yang dipakai untuk membentuk pikiran dan perasaan, keinginan dan perbuatan-perbuatan, alat yang dipakai untuk mempengaruhi dan dipengaruhi. Kedua, bahasa adalah tanda yang jelas dari kepribadian yang baik maupun yang buruk, tanda yang jelas dari keluarga dan bangsa, tanda yang jelas dari budi kemanusiaan.” It means, First, language is not only human beings can think regularly but also can communicate what we are thinking to others, also

language we can express our feelings and attitudes. The second is the language serves as a means of communication between individuals. Accordingly, how the attitude and the way a person acts, how social life in society, and so on, mostly influenced by the prevailing language in the community. The words which are contained in the sentence language reflects personality of a person, is correct and the originals are acceptable.

Kridalaksana (1993:21)says, “Bahasa adalah sistem lambang bunyi yang arbitrer yang dipergunakan oleh para anggota suatu masyarakat untuk bekerja sama, berinteraksi, dan mengidentifikasikan diri.” And next Abdul Chaer and Leonie Agustina (2004:11) says, “Hakikat bahasa antara lain bahwa bahasa itu sebuah sistem lambang, berupa bunyi yang arbitrer, produktif, dinamis, beragam, dan manusiawi.” Based on the above meanings, we could conclude that language is the sound symbol system is used by humans to communicate each other for the purpose of communicating.

2.2 Definition of Transgender

Nadia (2005) says, “Transgender atau waria sebagai individu yang sejak lahir memiliki jenis kelamin laki-laki, akan tetapi dalam proses berikutnya menolak bahwa dirinya seorang laki-laki. Maka waria melakukan berbagai usaha untuk menjadi perempuan, baik dari sikap, perilaku dan penampilannya. Selanjutnya dikemukakan bahwa kebanyakan waria berada pada posisi transseksual.” It means, stated that most transgender in the transsexual position. but in the next process there is a desire to be accepted as a different gender.

Koeswinarno (2004) says, “Dalam konteks psikologis waria termasuk transseksual, yakni individu yang secara fisik memiliki jenis kelamin yang jelas, namun secara psikis cenderung untuk menampilkan diri sebagai lawan jenis.” Views of the meaning of transsexuals , Yash (2003) says, “Transseksual sebagai masalah indentitas jenis kelamin, kesadaran mental yang dimiliki individu tentang jenis kelaminnya, laki-laki atau perempuan.” gender identity is owned by a transsexual opposite gender which is "Imposed" by him based on his physical genital.

Devault & Lyarber (2005) say, “Transseksual adalah individu yang identitas gender dan anatomi seksualnya tidak cocok. Seorang transseksual merasa terjebak dalam tubuh dan anatomi seksual yang salah.” Walters & Ross (1986) say, “Transseksual berusaha untuk diterima menjadi anggota dari kelompok jenis kelamin yang berbeda”. Based on the definition of transgender are proposed by the experts above, it can be concluded that transgender feel different gender identities with his gender physically, he tried to be accepted as a member of the opposite gender of his gender physically.

2.3 Definition of Transgender’s Language

Transgender’s language is a originating language from transgender community. It has several regular patterns of in both writing and speech. One pattern of word formation modifies standard Indonesian roots (normally composed of two syllables) to have e as the first vowel and ong closing the second syllable—hence providing regular standard Indonesian word bencong Another word formation pattern adds

-in-binan itself, formed with the word banci, "male transvestite", to which the -in- infix has been added and from which the second syllable -ci has been dropped.

Transgender’s language or slang is variety of language that are used by speakers of teenagers, transgender to express ideas and emotions. too many variations language now that is created a new vocabularies used by transgender or even teenagers, which sometimes sounds is very strange and doesn’t make sense.

1. INTRODUCTION 1.1Background of the Study

Transgender are men who prefer to role as a women in his daily life. The existence of transgender has been long recorded in history and has different position in every society. Although it can be related to conditions of a person's physical , the symptoms of transgender are part of the social aspect. Moreover, Transgender can also be interpreted as an individual who feels the identity of his gender is different from his gender physically, so, he tried to be accepted as a member of the different gender of his gender physically transgenderism.

A man chooses to be transgender can related to biological conditions (hermaphroditism), sexual orientation (homosexuality), and effect the social environment. . The environment is the biggest contributing factor that determine future of a person include determining transgender or not a man. The man who as a child close with the woman, tend to grow up to be a figure like a woman. Economic demand can also be said as the reason, because, initially being transgender only as a pretense to get money, however, this pretense could be a habit if done frequently.

Traumatic factor also can indeed be a trigger the presence of a transgender. The man was not treated well in the past, It could be because ever been hurt by a woman so he decided to like the same gender and change the look of him become a transgender. Based on what I know and what I see the reason they are to become a transgender is inherited from his influence in his family. If a boy the only one in a family and boy is always be pampered by his parents, so he

grew become a feminin man doesn’t like a man in general when he has been grown.

The traits of a transgender From the point of appearance almost all transgenders tend to stylized like a woman from the side of clothing nor the accessories and jewelry that she wears. The clothes and accessories that are used even excess of what is used by a woman in general, even a lot of them who are very obsessive to changed his organs resemble a woman physically we can see of eyebrows which are beautifully shaped, the breast who is operated, their long hair and straight, Short hair that tend to be colored, clean skin because often do the treatment at the salon. Transgender movements graceful and intonation of his dialect when communicate also are very striking although sounds strange and funny with vibration volume between a woman

One of the much discussed communities lately is Waria Community or also known as Transgender. A community can appear variety of language. It lasted to aim of facilitate the communication between the member of community. A lot of people who do not know and understand about this community languages except transgender community.

Some people said that, the transgender’s language has actually been around since the 1980’s but at the time was called slang (okem). Then, the language is adopted and then modified so unique, and is used by some people or just certain circles. At the first time, slang is used by the thugs who their lives near the violence, crimes, drugs, and alcohol. A lot of new terms that they had created with the aim that ordinary people or outside from their community do not

understand what they are talking about or they have to discussed. They designed the new words, replace the word to opposite, search for words matching, determine the numbers, replacement of phoneme, addition of prefix, insert, or suffix. Intercommunication among transgender or transgender recognize what is called “budaya teman sebaya (peer culture)”. The peer culture of transgender who generally has a value and characteristics of culture different or even contrary to the culture of others.

In Medan city we can also meet transgender, they are association of many different backgrounds. Certainly, we can find at various street corners of Medan, such as Gajah Mada street, Iskandar Muda street, Nibung street, Selayang intersection, ring road, and we can also find them in beauty salons in Medan. The transgenders in Medan is definitely very familiar with the different languages with Indonesian among them, eventhough not only them, native women and native men also able to use this language.

1.1 The Problems of the Study

Based on the background that has been described, it can be identified several issues as follow:

a. What is transgender’s language?

b. How is the pattern variation of vocabularies in Transgender language that there is in Medan ?

1.2The Scope of the Study

Scope of the study has important purpose in writing this paper. It used to limit the problem so the topic in this paper is more focussed. The scope of this study is about the language that is used by Transgender in Medan.

1.4The purposes of the Study

a). To introduce the reader about the language used by the transgender community.

b). To explain the reader about How the pattern formation vocabulary variations of language which there are in Medan.

1.5The reason for Choosing the Topic

To answer my curiosity about this language because I know the language from my mother who has been adept at using this language. in addition, also want to tell people who do not know that the transgender community are also has language to communicate each other group.

1.6The Methods of the Study a. Library research

Library research needs to get the information in solving a problem, to fulfill an academic assignment or for our own purpose. This method is used to find a certain data by collecting some books that relevant to theme.

b. Field research

Some of the most valuable information in the world isn’t located in a library or online. Field research is a way of unearthing that information. Field research can be an extraordinarily exciting and rewarding experience leading to

important discoveries and breakthrough ideas. It is used by having observation to the place that we need to know, and get information from some informants knowsabout this language.

Kertas karya ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan bahasa waria yang ada dikota medan. Penulisan kertas karya ini menggunakan metode penelitian dengan mengumpulkan data-data dari sejumlah informan yang mengerti tentang bahasa tersebut. Temuan penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa bahasa di kalangan waria diciptakan sebagai alat komunikasi dalam berinteraksi antar kelompok mereka. Bahasa waria yang digunakan adalah bahasa yang diciptakan oleh kelompok waria itu sendiri. Bahasa waria juga memiliki hubungan makna dengan bahasa Indonesia. Selanjutnya, bahasa yang digunakan waria dalam berkomunikasi terdapat perubahan makna dan memiliki pola tertentu, yaitu gejala bahasa seperti penambahan suku kata, penghilangan suku kata, serta pembentukan kata-kata baru secara teratur dan tidak teratur.
