Rose. Meaning to say, Blair‘s internal conflict has not been solved because of the
gossip, it affects Blair‘s instead. The way they state who the outsider is makes
Blair pleased. Psychologically, this gives Blair courageous to state in public about her dislike toward Cyrus, an improper act. Blair no longer keeps her disapproval
within her mind. Blair has no more reason to accept Cyrus Rose. At the end, she even shows her rejection toward Cyrus at a brunch on Sunday morning where
there are the Upper-East-Siders. Cyrus Rose sliced his salmon-and-leek omelette in half and plunked it on a
pumpernickel bagel. ―I‘ve been craving eggs,‖ he said, biting into it hungrily. ―You know when your body tells you, you need something?‖ he
said, to no one in particular. ―Mine‘s shouting, ‗Eggs, eggs, eggs‘‖ And mine’s shouting, “Shut the fuck up,” Blair thought.
Blair pushed her plate toward him. ―Here, have mine. I hate eggs,‖ she said. p. 153.
2. The influences of Gossips among Chuck Bass, Kati Farkas, and Isabel
Coates toward Conflict between Serena van der Woodsen and Blair Waldorf and Conflict between Serena van der Woodsen and Chuck Bass
Gossips among Chuck Bass, Kati Farkas, and Isabel Coates influence some numbers of conflicts. These apparently tend to be the initial factor of how
some conflicts begin. The conflicts between Serena and Blair, and Serena and Chuck are the ones that are influenced. Even though some particular characters do
not gather together to have a gossip on purpose, they clearly hear the gossip. In this case, Blair is included because she is actually there with Chuck, Kati, and
Isabel having the gossip, but she remains silent. The first is conflict between Serena van der Woodsen and Blair Waldorf.
The coming of Serena itself has made Blair frustrated because she does not want
Serena win over what Blair has pursued; friends, love, popularity. Blair does not know why Serena is back; on the other hand their friends think that Blair knows it.
They acknowledge that Blair and Serena are best friends. Hearing such gossips from her best friends lead Blair to think about what she is worried the most. She
does not want to let Serena taking her friends ‘ attention. Psychologically, it is a
common jealous feeling of a teenager. Blair may think that Serena has already taken her friends since Chuck, Kati, and Isabel cannot stop talking about her from
the first appearance of Serena. They wait for Blair to tell the reason why Serena is back, but Blair keeps on her arrogance. She does not want to ask Serena because it
will make Serena feel that she can be friend with Blair and her friends. This makes conflict between Blair and Serena starts. Blair does not want to gather with
Serena at all. Functioning as friendship, this gossip influences Blair to dislike Serena because she is outsider. Blair also hates the way they gossip, it makes
Serena looks more famous than her. For about ten seconds Blair thought about telling her friends the truth: She
didn‘t know Serena was coming back. But how would that look? Blair was supposed to be plugged in, and how plugged in would she sound if she
admitted she knew nothing about Serena‘s return, while her friends seemed to know so much? Blair couldn‘t very well stand there and say
nothing. That would be too obvious. She always had something to say. Besides, who wanted to hear the truth when the truth was incredibly
boring? Blair lived for drama. Here was her chance. p. 23, The second conflict which is influenced by this gossip is the conflict
between Serena van der Woodsen and Chuck Bass. Chuck is basically a bad boy. Because of the gossip, Chuck has bad desire toward Serena. Chuck may think that
it is possible for him to seduce Serena, since the destructive gossip about Serena has spread. If it is looked from the classific
ation of the gossipee‘s point of view,
Serena has been considered as a bad girl from Chuck and his friends have gossiped. Chuck, Kati, and Isabel‘s gossip is like the initial call for Chuck to start
his conflict toward Serena. He does not have any doubt that Serena will follow what Chuck wants. Nevertheless, Serena is not like the girl they talk about, she
resists Chuck‘s bad desire to seduce her. The conflict between Chuck and Serena rises. The quotation below happens after Serena denies Chuck to sleep over in his
room. ―Whatever,‖ Chuck said. He leaned into the cab and pressed Serena
against the seat. ―What‘s your problem anyway?‖ he hissed. ―You‘ve been fucking Nate Archibald since tenth grade, and I‘m sure you did just about
every guy at boarding school, and in France, too. What, are you like, too good to give me some?‖ p. 136.
3. The Influences of Gossips among Rain Hoffstetter, Kati Farkas, and
Isabel Coates toward Conflict between Serena van der Woodsen and Blair Waldorf
The same gossip which is about Serena‘s returns among Rain Hoffstetter, Kati Farkas, and Isabel Coates influence the conflict between Serena and Blair.
The fact that Blair is not involved within the gossip does not mean that it cannot affect her conflicts. The same pattern as the previous gossip is also applied here
through the way this gossip influences Blair‘s conflict with Serena. While in the previous gossip about Serena starts Blair‘s conflict toward Serena, this gossip
tends to be the continuity of the conflict. Blair‘s madness toward Serena gets even
worse, because her friends cannot stop talking about her. She feels ignored. She hates Serena for grabbing her friends‘ attention. This gossip tends to raise the
conflict between Blair Waldorf and Serena van der Woodsen.
