Example 14 shows the conversation between Susan and Aldo which happened when they we
re being captured and tied in Rayna’s torture room see Appendix, p. 65. Susan wanted to escape from that place and she asked Aldo to
untie her. Both of them were tied and it was ver y difficult to untie Susan’s rope.
Therefore, Aldo climbed upon Susan’s body while Susan’s lying on the floor in
order to be able to reach the rope. When Aldo tried to untie her, Susan said damn. This swearing belongs to the psychological motive because it was uttered to
rele ase Susan’s feeling over the situation. Susan felt embarrassed and surprised
that a man was trying to help her by climbing upon her body. In the previous action, she felt so powerful by fighting the bad guys. Then, the moment when
Aldo climbed upon her body made her feeling embarrassed and not as cool as before.
2. Social Motive
The second motive of swearing foun d in the main character’s conversation
is the social motive. The social motive was related to the field of sociolinguistics itself which convey the relation between language and society. From this point of
view, swearing can be used to communicate with other people in different social context. Anderson 1985 points out that swear words are more shocking when
they are uttered in public as cited in Karjalainen, 2002. In social motive, swearing is used to assert identity in a group, friendliness and show social

43 situations that can cause insult. There are some examples of swearing in social
motive explained below.
[15] Rayna : Penny, do you feel the need to tell anybody about what you just
saw?
Susan : Im not gonna tell anybody. That asshole got what he deserved.

In Example 15, Rayna asked Susan about what would she do after she saw Rayna killed the man who was trying to poison her see Appendix, p. 56. Susan
was aware that Rayna’s bodyguards were ready to shoot her if she had potential
reason to tell other people. Therefore, she told Rayna that she would not tell anybody about what just happened, and Susan said that the guy was bad and he
deserved to die. As a result, Susan used word asshole to the man who tried to poison Rayna and said that his death was worth it in order to gain R
ayna’s trust. The word asshole is regarded as social motive of swearing because it is used to
strengthen Rayna and Susan’s relation. Here, Susan was trying to show hatred
towards others in the sh ake of getting Rayna’s trust and maintained their social
relation.
[16] Susan : One of your eyes is bigger than the other.
Fine : Really?

Example 16 shows the conversation between Susan and Fine when Susan was caught by Rayna see Appendix, p. 65. Fine tried to explain why he faked his
death and joined Rayna. He wanted to take down the nuclear selling. In the previous discussion about the types of swear words, this conversation was
included in humorous type because Susan tricked Fine about his eyes and said goddamn and asshole in a humorous way to create a funny situation between
44 them. Hence, the motive that Susan employed in the use of these swearing was the
social motive. Here Susan used swear words goddamn and asshole to show the social intimacy with Fine. These swear words did not create negative impact or
offensive situation because Susan and Fine was close to each other and they used to work together. So, swear words in this conversation belong to social motive
because they are used to show social intimacy.
[17] Deluca : Now, let me get this straight. You work for the CIA... yet youre
willing to help me sell a nuclear bomb... in order to save this mans life? Why would I believe that?
Rayna : Because shes in love with him. Susan : Yeah, so what? This idiot doesnt even know it. Too dumb to
know Id do anything for him….. 01:49:34
This conversation happened when Susan was in Deluca’s house see
Appendix, pp. 67-68. There she found out that Deluca was about to shoot Fine. Susan tried to tell Deluca that she had all of the information that he needed to deal
with Solsa Duldaev. For the payment she wanted Deluca to allow her to join him in the condition he did not kill Fine. Then, Deluca asked Susan ab
out Susan’s reason. Rayna knew the answer and stated that Susan loved Fine. Instead of
ignoring that, Susan agreed on the statement and she insulted Fine by saying that he was too idiot and too dumb to realize what she felt towards him. Susan
revealed her feeling and used swear words to Fine in order to make Deluca believed her, so that Deluca would not shoot Fine. The word idiot and dumb used
by Susan belong to the social motive because they showed hatred toward other people in order to gain social intimacy with Deluca.
