3. Linguistic Motive

The last motive found in the Spy movie is the linguistic motive. The motive of swearing here is related to the use of language linguistically. Andersson 1985 describes “we are free to use any of the tens of thousands of words in our vocabulary, as long as they convey the message we wish to communicate” as cited in Karjalainen, p. 30. Thus, linguistic motive shows that swearing is used to emphasize or strengthen what people say. Besides, it can be just a way of speaking. The discussion of some swearing examples belong to this motives are elaborated as follows. [18] Anton : Well, I wont give it to you. Susan : Ive been in this dress for 12 fucking hours. Give me your coat. 01:19:02 After Susan got Rayna’s trust, Susan, Anton, and Rayna were heading to a hotel see Appendix, p. 60. Rayna asked Susan to clean herself. Unfortunately, Susan did no t bring any clothes instead of last night’s party dress. When she asked Anton to give his coat to her, Anton refused to give it. Susan added fucking in describing how long she had worn her dress. The word fucking belongs to linguistic motive because it was not directed to Anton. It was used to emphasize Susan’s condition. She had not changed her clothes for quite a long time and she wanted Anton to understand her situation. [19] Aldo : It is done. Susan : Thank you Aldo. I dont wanna know why my neck is wet...but you did excellent work. Aldo : Prego. Susan : Turn around, let me untie you, and lets get the fuck out of here. ….. 01:44:17 46 Example 19 happened when Susan and Aldo were prisoned in Rayna’s torturing room see Appendix, pp. 65-66. Susan realized that she had to escape from that place. Therefore, she asked Aldo to untie the rope that bonded them. After doing very hard work, Aldo was capable to untie Susan’s rope. Susan thanked to Aldo and then she helped Aldo untying his rope. She also invited Aldo to get out from that place as soon as possible. Susan used the swear word fuck as a linguistic motive. The word wa s used to emphasize Susan’s willingness to get out from Rayna’s torturing room. She wanted to follow Fine who wanted to take down Deluca and found the bomb. [20] Deluca : Now, let me get this straight. You work for the CIA... yet youre willing to help me sell a nuclear bomb... in order to save this mans life? Why would I believe that? Rayna : Because shes in love with him. Susan : Yeah, so what? This idiot doesnt even know it. Too dumb to know Id do anything for him. And fuck the CIA, right? What have they ever done for me? Took 10 years of my life, gave me shitty pay... that pretty sure gave me pinkeye or at least an allergy... Something got fucked up in my eye. I wouldve been out a long time ago if it hadnt been for Fine. So, yeah, Ill do anything it takes to keep him alive. Thats pretty pathetic, right? 01:49:34 In the Example 20, there was long conversation between Rayna, Deluca, Fine, and Susan see Appendix, pp. 67-68. This was a little part that showed how Susan used linguistic motive in her speech. Here, Susan tried to explain to Deluca that she wanted to help him face Solsa Duldaev in case Deluca did not shoot Fine. Rayna suspected that Susan loved Fine. Consequently, Susan confessed her real feeling towards Fine and also added fake information about being paid cheap in CIA. Susan stated that she was given shitty pay by CIA and it made her wanted to PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI 47 betray CIA. The swear word shitty was used by Susan to emphasize how bad CIA was in paying Susan’s hard work. From the results, it could be summed up that Susan Cooper used all of the swear words types. The result shows that the abusive swear word was the most common type of swear words used by Susan Cooper See Appendix, p. 70. Susan Cooper often used the swear words to abuse other people since her addressees were mostly her enemy. Furthermore, Susan Cooper also applied all of the motives of swear words in her conversation. The most common swearing motive used by the main character in the Spy movie was the psychological motive See Appendix, p. 70. As a spy who performed a job which was dangerous and challenging, Susan often used this motive to release her feeling towards a shocking and immediate situation. Besides, Susan frequently used her swearing to release her anger towards others. PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI
