4. April 2014 – American Evangelical Pastor Scott Lively

Scott Lively is an American author, attorney, social activist, and independent candidate for Governor of Massachusetts in the 2014 election. Lively has cal led for the criminalization of “the public advocacy of homosexuality” as far back as 2007 and was allegedly involved in anti-gay legislation in Uganda. He is notable for his involvement in the ex-gay movement and his opposition to LGBT rights. Datum 7: “Anti-gay pastor Scott Lively talks about LGBT rights, running for Governor and Obama.” Datum 8: “Gays use their bodies „in ways they‟re not supposed to‟ hopeful governor declares.” Seven Building Tasks of discourse on data 7 and 8 are analyzed and elaborated as to be seen below. From the significance aspect, the tweet shows the LGBT community the refusal from a certain religious leader as can be seen from the foregrounding of adjective “anti-gay” and the noun “pastor”. The figure as shown as pastor Scott Lively expressed as having repulsive manner towards the community as reflected through his action that will have an impact to the community from the use of phrases “running for Governor ”, “hopeful governor”, and “in ways they‟re not supposed to” which will eventually affect their freedom of expression, the way they perform their lives, or in short, their wellbeing, depicted on the excerpt with the word “rights”. The Huffington Post‟s Gay Voices HuffPostGay has made a clear gesture of using the noun “gays” and the term “LGBT rights” to literally make a point of which community was being talked about and even be affected the most if this particular figure succeeded on their desired goal, a head of state in this case. As far as the political capacity of a Governor goes, it includes the chance of allowing and preventing policy making and its passing to actually be implemented in public, for example a law on same-sex marriage. Furthermore, the display of “Obama” as the leader of the states appears as an attempt on signifying the issue as a political move to win wider public attention and votes, moreover, it gives the sense of haste and exaggeration on Lively‟s side. On the activity aspect, the news aggregator used the tweet in attempt to warn as well as to inform the community about a particular contradictory movement that will rebut the ways of living of the LGBT community shown by the transitive verb “use” as a certain authoritative figure could put a restriction on the control they have over their own bodies. There would be irrelevant effect if the movement be done by someone without the authoritative capacity, but the extract above tells us that it is done , seen from the verb “declares”, and phrasal verbs “talks about ” and “running for ” , by a well-honored figure of a religious community which most probably will affect the way of thinking and behaving of his followers. Subsequently, the reported activity being done by pastor Scott Lively depicts the identity which The Huffington Post ‟s Gay Voices HuffPostGay taken, that is as an opposing party towards the religious leader, as can be seen from the noun phrase “anti-gay pastor Scott Lively” and to be more specific, the use of the prefix “anti-” which means oppose to or against to the LGBT community along with its issues shown by the use of “LGBT rights”. This means the news aggregator sees the religious leaders not only as someone who has a disagreement on the view of LGBT issues, but also evinced his opposition with a real action that can get a legal recognition, if he succeeds to reach his goal, according to the law of the state he is running for Governor in. Based on Gee‟s theory on relationship building, this tweet displays a reasonably intimate stance between the news aggregator and its audience. This notion is shown by the level of casualty and directness of the language used. The aggregator feels as if there is no requirement to be enigmatic with presenting a specific figure with full name “Scott Lively”, the view this figure has with the adjective “anti-gay”, and what sort of relationships all parties would have i.e. the community with the figure, the aggregator with the figure, and the community with the aggregator if the figure wins the race as displayed with the l inguistic units “gays”, “their bodies ”, and “ hopeful governor ”. From the noun phrase “anti-gay pastor Scott Lively” can be seen that the social good the news aggregator intent to share as the politics task is the belief in which a certain political figure as shown by the noun phrase “hopeful governor” and the noun “Governor” delivers his own view on a number of issues, i.e. the political governance with the word “Obama” and public policy, LGBT related to be more specific, with the linguistic units “gays”, “use”, and “ in ways they‟re not supposed to”. The Huffington Post ‟s Gay Voices HuffPostGay enacted the connection task by making the issue of a certain religious leader figure with a certain view on LGBT issues with noun phrase “anti-gay pastor” relevant to the way the community perform their lives as indicated by the units “gays use” and “in ways they‟re not supposed to ”. The current situation of the community live performance would differ if the figure succeeded in achieving his goal as displayed by “running for Governor” as the position of head of state has the power on creating and implementing public policy binding and affecting the community as a whole. From the sign systems and knowledge task, the presentation of information to the audience as the principal element of message in news by Newsom and Wollert are incorporated . 89 Familiar terminology of authoritative positions are used, both for religious and political, with “pastor” and “Governor” to make it clear of the issue of Scott Lively and the power he currently has and to have. His actions are also represented 89 Ibid ., p. 11. with the common phrasal verbs “talks about” and “running for” which have a high intensity of daily usage. Though specific term “LGBT rights” also used in order to maintain the understanding of which community would likely to be affected the most by the figure‟s campaign and winning. The current president‟s name “Obama” also taken into display as it is the highest authoritative figure familiar to the audience which Lively would have direct link to the creation or recreation of public policy. The identification of the analyzed building tasks above can be seen from the table below.
