54 leather coat and jeans–cowboy pants, we used to call them. In Afghanistan,
owning anything American, especially if it wasn’t secondhand, was a sign of wealth.
“I need to find him, Agha.” “What is he to you?” he said. I didn’t see the point of his question, but I
reminded myself that impatience wasn’t going to make him tell me any faster.
“He’s our servant’s son,” I said. The old man raised a pepper gray eyebrow. “He is? Lucky Hazara, having
such a concerned master. His father should get on his knees, sweep the dust at your feet with his eyelashes Hosseini, 66.”
This kind of situation leads and shapes Assef’ point of view. He turns into a man who really dislike Hazaras. It cannot be denied that Asef is very obsesed
with Hitler—it will be explained later—though his society’s way of thinking also affects his idea of hating Hazaras.
d. Idol Hitler
Assef is very proud of his mixed Pasthun and German. However, alas, he idolizes Hitler. Since Assef was child, he had shown an interest in political affairs.
It is seen when he meets Amir and talks about Daoud Khan. “Have you heard the news, boys?” Assef said, his grin never faltering.
“The king is gone. Good riddance. Long live the president …. “Do you know what I will tell Daoud Khan the next time he comes to our house for
dinner?” Assef said. “I’m going to have a little chat with him, man to man, mard to mard. Tell him what I told my mother. About Hitler. Now, there
was a leader. A great leader. A man with vision. I’ll tell Daoud Khan to remember that if they had let Hitler finish what he had started, the world
be a better place now Hosseini, 37.” Rosenthal, as cited by Wong, concludes that the books people read serve
to mediate their personality formation 96. Assef grows in a rich family. Their parents are literate; therefore, Assef is also literate. He likes reading. Assef reads
much German literature, especially some books which relate to Hitler and holocaust. “But you have to read books they don’t give out in school,” Assef said.
55 “I have. And my eyes have been opened. Now I have a vision, and I’m going to
share it with our new president… Hosseini, 38” Weirdly, he has an opinion that Hitler’s ideas and ways of thinking are brilliant. “…About Hitler. Now, there was
a leader. A great leader. A man with vision Hosseini, 37.” Therefore, he has a dream to do the same action as Hitler and Nazi have
done. “Too late for Hitler,” he said. “But not for us Hosseini, 38.” The action is doing massacre to an ethnic group whom they do not like.
“… We are the true Afghans, the pure Afghans, not this Flat-Nose here. His people pollute our homeland, our watan. They dirty our blood.” He
made a sweeping, grandiose gesture with his hands. “Afghanistan for Pasthuns, I say. That’s my vision Hosseini, 38.”
Hitler with his Nazi massacre Jews with a reason to purify German.
Meanwhile, in his adulthood, Assef with his Taliban massacre Hazaras with a reason to purify Afghanistan. “Afghanistan is the land of Pasthuns. It always has
been, always will be Hosseini, 38.” The explanations stated previously shows that Assef’s childhood
experience, including his habit or hobby influence his personality. He is very obsessed with Hitler because when he was in his childhood, he read many books
about Hitler and that made him grabbed a certain idea about Hitler. He believes that Hitler has done a marvelous action by doing holocaust. He has also a dream
to imitate ‘the Hitler’s way’ by killing Hazaras in order to make Afghanistan become the Land of Pasthuns. This dream is fulfilled in his adulthood.
