CHAPTER V CONCLUSION

In this chapter, the writer would like to draw a conclusion from the analysis that has been done in Chapter IV. My Ancestor’s House play describes about patriarchal culture and tradition in Pakistan. This play discusses the position of women and the rules in that country. Most of the characters explore the patriarchal culture and the ideas of feminism that exists in the society. The characters that have been discussed in the analysis are all of the characters in the play; Bindia, Roona, Begum Hajira, Nazo, Deedi, Sahid, and Ali Buksh. Begum Hajira is an ideal image of Pakistani woman and an obedient wife as well. The ideal image of Pakistani woman are religious, obedient, respect and support the husband, serve the children and educate them. She is the gatekeeper; it means she is the agent that maintain the continuity of patriarchal culture in Pakistan society. She indirectly gives the understanding about the rule of women in Pakistan that women have to be obedient to men. Nazo’s experience is reflected the patriarchal practice but she enjoys the patriarchal culture. She gives full respect to her eldest brother and believes that what he decide is the best. In the other hand, even though her husband also treated her unequal such as exploited her mother, she choose to accept his action and be an obedient wife in the family. Sahid and Ali Buksh are two male characters in the play that practice the patriarchal culture in their life. They both have the same thought that women and men are in the different position in the society. It shows when Sahid has more rights in the family as a eldest son. Ali Buksh also has a same thought as the society about Bindia’s habit as a smoker. When he asks Bindia to not smoke again, it shows that he actually agree that smoking is only for man. Deedi is the figure that most of the characters discussed. She is the victim of tradition; she suffered of the patriarchal culture that surrounded her life. She is the figures that captured the exact situation in Pakistan, when women have less of freedom and ruled by men. In any condition, as a Pakistan woman she has to respect her husband and serves the best for her family. Deedi character is submissive, it means she follows her husband and still loves him and gives full respects. Bindia is the character that reflects the ideas of feminism; she leaves her homeland to America as the form of her refusal about men’s domination. She move to America to venture her life and to get freedom in her life as a Pakistani, she is married an American man and has a job in America. Bindia also has the awareness of gender equality that women and men should have the same rights and position. Her father already passed away years before when she already lives in America. Bindia is an objective woman, she has a practical idea of what could be achieved in her life and she thinks every moment and problems in sensible thought. Even though she has a rebellious perspective, in the other hand she has a realistic though as well. It shows from the way she face the problems in her life and the way she communicate with other characters.
