In general, there are two factors that influence the students’ speaking proficiency. They are external and internal factors. The external factor comes from students’ background knowledge, both from family and previous schools. The students that graduated from good quality of Junior High School tend to be more active in learning speaking. The students that ever lived in foreign country also have better vocabulary mastery and speaking proficiency. The internal factor comes from the students themselves. Most of them feel unconfident, lack of vocabulary and being afraid of delivering their ideas.

c. The strategies used by the teachers to improve the students’ speaking skill

To solve the problems, the teachers always motivate the students by saying that English is easy. Besides, they use pair work and information gap activities in teaching speaking skill. However, the class becomes noisy and disturbs another class. They also made Saturday - English day, but only some students speak in English on that day because they feel more unconfident and afraid of delivering their ideas.

All teachers agreed that the students’ previous knowledge really gives big influences to the students in improving their speaking skill.
