4.2.1.3 As an Investor
In his confusion, Wilhelm meets with Dr. Tamkin, a man who lives at the same hotel. Even though they live at the same hotel, they do not know each other
well. Wilhelm only knows that Dr. Tamkin is his father’s friend. And again, his
father warns Wilhelm to be careful with Dr. Tamkin. ―Wilhelm’s father, old Dr.
Adler, lived in an entirely different world from his son, but he had warned him once against Dr. Tamkin.‖ Bellow 14. Knowing that Wilhelm has a financial problem,
Dr. Tamkin proposes Wilhelm that he can give a solution for Wilhelm ’s problem.
He introduces Wilhelm the way of becoming rich without wasting too much time. It is called speculation. Wilhelm only needs to open small account and invest his
money there. Dr. Tamkin convinces Wilhelm about his optimistic expectation that Wilhelm will be rich .The ways Dr. Tamkin explains attract Wilhelm.
The psychologist, Dr. Tamkin, had got him into this. Tamkin lives at the Gloriana an attended the card game. He had explained to Wilhelm that you
could speculate in commodities at one of the uptown branches of a good Wall Street house without making the full deposit of margin legally required.
It was up to the branch managers knew Tamkin
– he would allow you to make short-term purchases. You needed only to open a small account.
―The whole secret of this type of speculation,‖ Tamkin had told him, ―is in the alertness. You have to act fast
—buy it and sell it; sell it and buy again. But quick Get to the window and have them wire Chicago at just the right
second. Strike and strike again Bellow 12-13. Tamkin convinces Wilhelm that people lose because they cannot play the game. He
tells Wilhelm th at he does not gamble, but he does it scientifically. ―People lose
because they are greedy and can’t get out when it starts to go up. They gamble, but I do it scientifically.‖ Bellow 13.
Even though he is interested in Tamkin’s explanation, Wilhelm is afraid
about the possibility of being bankrupt. He needs to think several times to start

career as an investor. Finally, Wilhelm decides to trust all of his money to Dr. Tamkin. He thinks that this is the last effort he can do to get out from all of his
problems. ―But the time for this question was past and he had to trust him now.
After a long struggle to come to a decision, he had given him the money.‖ Bellow 64.
Wilhelm has a goal to reverse his condition as soon as possible. He sees that this is the only way he can do to reverse his condition. Jess and Gregory 499 state
that high personal standards and goals can lead to achievements and self- satisfaction. However, when people set their goals too high, they are likely to fail.
Wilhelm’s decision to trust Dr. Tamkin does not go well as he plans. Wilhelm loses all of his money in the market. What Dr. Tamkin predicts before is not accurate.
Arthur and Lawrence qtd in Baruch 3 states that career is an evolving sequence of a person’s work experience over time. From the theory, it can be concluded that a
good career is built from working experiences. However, what Wilhelm does is conversely. He has no experience and skills in investing money. As a result, he has
to pay for his own choice. Wilhelm totally runs out of money and jobless. In that condition, he still blames Dr. Tamkin as a man who makes him bankrupt. Wilhelm
never thinks more deeply that actually he is the one who should be blamed.
