4.1.1. Profanity

Profanity is the only theme of religious taboo in this monologue. There are two words which belong to this theme. Those two words are hell and damn. The word hell refers to “place of eternal suffering” and the word damn refers to “the act of condemning”. The word hell was tabooed by the effect of the power of Catholic Church. This is when the Church was considered the law itself with its doctrine: extra ecclessia nulla salus outside the Catholic Church there are no salvation. The reference of the word hell is “the place of eternal punishment”. The word damn has the sense of “damnation, doom to punishment and inflict damage upon” if it is used as curse word e.g. “damn you” Hughes 2006 says that this word was highly taboo for the two millennia p. 116. Nevertheless, as a result of the secularization of the society, this word‟s terrifying notion was diminished.

4.1.2. Sexual Activity

The second theme is sexual activity, which belongs to secular taboo, with the word fuck, cocksucker, and motherfucker. The word fuck refers to “copulation” and in some utterances this word evokes the sense of “claiming a person despicable”, “showing hatred to the addressee”, and “showing anger”. Carlin also uses the word fuck noun to refer to “ a name of a person or a position which is prestigious ”. As a verb, the word fuck is used to refer to “to have sex” and “to damage irreparably”. 43 There is also an inflection from the word fuck i.e. madfucker which refers to “despicable person”. The word cocksucker refers to “person engaged in fellatio” and the word motherfucker refers to “ person engaged in an incestuous act”.

4.1.3. Bodily Effluvia

The third theme is bodily effluvia with the words shit, piss, fart, and turd. The word shit as a noun refers to “feces” and as verb refers to “the activity dealing with producing feces”. As metaphors, the word shit as noun is used to refer to “ something unpleasant, something small and not important”, “good stuff”, “deed”, “something with bad taste”, “attention”, and even “Carlin‟s hair”. In some utterances Carlin also uses the word shit to refer to “discussion involving the word shit” and the activity of mentioning “example of utterance using the word shit”. As a metaphorical verb, the word shit has reference of “to get rid of”. There is also the derivation from the word shit i.e. shitty as adjective and adverb. The adjective shitty refers to “awful” and the adverb refers to “in an awful way”. The utterances containing the word shit in this mono logue also makes some senses of “an unpleasant condition about Carlin‟s hair ”, “ being completely ignorant”, “ the difficulty and confusion of the speaker”, “time when disastrous consequences of something become known”, “being well or beautifully built using bricks ”, “being in an awkward predicament”, “something bad had happened”, “something goes unlikely as the speakers wants or 44 expects ”, “the surprise and relief of receiving the award”, “being panic of dropping something”, and “merely uttering a slang”. The words piss, fart, and turd draw much less attention than the word shit. The word piss noun refers to “urine”, fart noun refers to “the emission of wind through the anus”, and turd refers to “feces”. Hunt 2009 states that the indecent level of the effluvia theme is determined by the degree of solidity and the proximity to the genital anal area p. 7.

4.1.4. Intimated Part of the Body

The third theme is intimated part of the body. The words which belong to this theme are cunt, cock, tits, twat, pussy, and ass. The words cunt, twat, and pussy share the same references i.e. “woman‟s genital”. The word ass refers to “buttock” or “anus” and the word cock refers to “man‟s genital”. However, Carlin plays the homonymy relation of the word cock, pussy, and ass. Then, the word cock also refers to “rooster”, the word pussy refers to “cat”, and the word ass refers to “donkey”.

4.1.5. Ancestral Allusion

The last theme is ancestral allusion with the word bastard. The word bastard originally refers to “nobleman born out of marital condition and acquires some paternal status ” Hughes, 2006, p. 18. The sense that causes this word to have a negative connotation is its derivation from Old French which is interpreted 45 alternatively “child born in a barn” or “child born in packsaddle”. Hughes adds some information that packsaddle was used as a makeshift bed for men on the move, who might share his bed with local women p. 19.

4.1.6. Name of Animal

The last theme is name of animal. The word included in this theme is bitch. The word bitch in this monologue refers to “sensual woman prostitute” and “female dog”. The word bitch literally refers to “female dog” Hughes, 2006. This word then slides into another meaning, i.e. “a sensual woman”, and more derogatory, “a prostitute ” p. 23. The history of this word noted that in 1971 an article entitled The Bitch Manifesto was published, which supported movement of the second-wave feminist, to ameliorate the word bitch to mean “power”, freedom, confidence, and women‟s ability Sulistya, 2012, pp. 150-151.
