CHAPTER III METHODOLOGY
A. Object of the Study
The current data for this thesis is Jorge Gutierrez’s film
The Book of Life
. The work is analysed using masculinity and film analysis. Masculinity is used due
to the presence of masculine acts in
The Book of Life
that evoke the nuance of masculinity. It is believed that several events in
The Book of Life
led to the construction of one’s masculinity and
vice versa
. This hypothesis is elaborated later in Chapter IV.
The Book of Life
is a film directed by Jorge Gutierrez himself. The film is produced by Reel FX Creative Studios and Twentieth Century Fox Film
Corporation. The film is premiered on October 17
th
2014 with a duration of 95 minutes and rated PG Parental Guidance. The genre of Jorge Gutierrez’s
The Book of Life
is animation, adventure, and comedy. Since its premier, the film has won numerous awards and nominations from several prestigious events such as
Golden Globes, Broadcast Film Critics Association, PGA, and St. Louis Film Critics Association.
Comedy is presented in
The Book of Life
for many reasons. First, it is an animated film and intended for viewer in all ages. Second, relating to this study, is
to show where hegemonic masculinity disfavoured the presence of homosexual masculinity around them by giving them a comic sense of enforcement. The

cartoonist and through here, he can express his own culture though living in the US.
B. Approach of the Study
This undergraduate thesis uses gender and film approach as the basis for conducting the study. In gender approach, it is explained that:
In the literature on masculinities, evaluations of masculinity and explanations of the links between masculinitymasculinities and those
people defined as “men” vary according to theoretical perspective Pilcher and Whelehan, 2004: 83.
The masculinity approach from Pilcher and Whelehan is used because the masculinity in “men” can be vary depending to the theories that is presented in an
analysis. The approach is applied by relating masculinity in
The Book of Life
using masculinity theories and later discussed using film theories in Chapter IV. In film approach, the method of analysing a film can be done using a
medium like those in literature. The approach is explained that: Literature and films do have many elements in common, and though they
are different mediums, they communicate many things in similar ways Boggs, 1978: 20.
The approach is used because tough literary works are printed and films are watched, both works can be analysed together through a medium. The
approach is applied through
The Book of Life
as the source of film and its script as the source of medium. The two materials are used to identify masculinity in
The Book of Life
