companion for Victoria. While an upper class woman get pregnant outside of the wedlock, such actions would apologize if the woman going to marry but her name
will be tarnished and destroyed in the eyes of society if having a baby without marriage. That is because women were very reserved and lacking in education,
usually women that era a little naive. Just like Victoria, she admits that she does not really understand why she could be pregnant, because women are not allowed
to know about sexuality before marriage.
4. James’ Views toward Morality
In the novel A Kiss at Midnight, some of the characters will do everything to reach their goal. They will do something that could be immoral to get what they
want. Bristish society in the 19

century exalts the higher class because they have certain benefit rights. It makes people want to be able to join the highest class or
aristocrats. James thinks that sometimes to achieve that, they do things that are not always in a moral line. In this novel, Mariana Daltry come from the lower class,
she is succeeds in being an aristocracy. In her book A Kiss at Midnight Eloisa James wrote that Mariana elevate her status by marrying Victor Daltry, a son of an
earl. Mariana first elevate herself and cover his origins by saying that she is a widow of a colonel who died in the battlefield. In reality, Mariana is Victor
Daltry‟s former Mistress, means she come from the lower class. When she
married to Victor Daltry who is the son of an earl, Mariana securing his position as a member of the upper class.
Mariana also hopes that her daughter, Victoria could achieve higher position. Mariana do everything to make it happen. She will do anything to make
her daughter, Victoria marry a viscount. Victoria origin is from middle class in the public eye because she is known as a daughter of a colonel. Mariana wants
Victoria to marry an aristocrat. Mariana not even mind when Victoria get pregnant outside of wedlock with a viscount although it is not in accordance to the norms
prevailing in society because Victoria will be a viscountess. Mariana forces Kate to disguise as Victoria, in order to get the blessing from the viscount family. Kate
thinks that what Mariana do is immoral. She thinks Mariana should be angry about Victoria pregnancy, but Mariana just think that it is a good way to
encourage the viscount to Marry her daughter.

novel A Kiss at Midnight are Katherine Daltry, Prince Gabriel, Mariana Daltry, and Victoria Daltry. Katherine Daltry is a granddaughter of an earl. She belongs
to the upper class. It means she has certain birthright. Although she belongs to the upper class, Kate is a poor woman since her father gives all his money to Kate
’s stepmother. Kate is poor, so at first she cannot marry Prince Gabriel, the man she
loves because Gabriel needs a wealthy bride. Prince Gabriel is an upper class. He needs money to support his big family. Prince Gabriel is a responsible gentleman,
