answer the questions, the researcher acquired relevant theories regarding masculinity and film. The theories are then used to analyse the masculine
characteristics in general and relate it with The Book of Life. Gender and film approach are used in this thesis because masculinity is the main discussion in this
research while script analysis as well as particular shots or mise-en-scène in the The Book of Life are analysed later in Chapter IV.

CHAPTER III METHODOLOGY
A. Object of the Study
The current data for this thesis is Jorge Gutierrez’s film The Book of Life. The work is analysed using masculinity and film analysis. Masculinity is used due
to the presence of masculine acts in The Book of Life that evoke the nuance of masculinity. It is believed that several events in The Book of Life led to the
construction of one’s masculinity and vice versa. This hypothesis is elaborated later in Chapter IV.
The Book of Life is a film directed by Jorge Gutierrez himself. The film is produced by Reel FX Creative Studios and Twentieth Century Fox Film
Corporation. The film is premiered on October 17
th
2014 with a duration of 95 minutes and rated PG Parental Guidance. The genre of Jorge Gutierrez’s The
Book of Life is animation, adventure, and comedy. Since its premier, the film has won numerous awards and nominations from several prestigious events such as
Golden Globes, Broadcast Film Critics Association, PGA, and St. Louis Film Critics Association.
Comedy is presented in The Book of Life for many reasons. First, it is an animated film and intended for viewer in all ages. Second, relating to this study, is
to show where hegemonic masculinity disfavoured the presence of homosexual masculinity around them by giving them a comic sense of enforcement. The
reason why Jorge Gutierrez uses animation to present his work is because he is a PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI
