Nature of data Research Setting and Participants

programs on the Art and Craft, the students are required to be able to understand the process of designing and at the final phase, producing artworks in terms of craft and or technological design. Thus, the topic of describing process was selected since its indicators were considered appropriate for SMK students. The indicators are enabling students to 1 state the goal of a process, 2 describe the steps in doing or making artworks, and 3 mention the materials needed by using appropriate language expressions. Moreover, the choice of telephoning skill topic was considered significant since it is one of the skills needed in almost every work field. The telephoning skill being practiced included 1 identifying the caller and yourself, 2 taking and leaving phone messages, 3 directing and transferring calls, 4 holding the line and also 5 apologizing on the phone.

C. Nature of data

The nature of data is both numerical and narrative data. Referring to the first research question, the data of this research were required to reveal the improvement of students’ communicative skill before and after the treatment. The students’ communicative skill learning achievements were evaluated by the numerical data from the scores of their performance. Thus, the data for students’ communicative skill were gathered from the score of students’ recorded performance in the video. Furthermore, in the attempt to answer the second research question, which features of mobile phone video-making task contribute to the improvement of students’ communicative skills?, numerical data and narrative data were needed. The numerical data were gained through the five-point Likert scale questionnaires, while the narrative data were gathered from the open-ended questionnaire and the students’ opinion by means of interview. The questionnaires and interview were based on the features adopted from Nunan’s categorization of task based components and from the principal activities in the communicative language teaching CLT.

D. Research Setting and Participants

The setting of this study was at one vocational school in the Special Region of Yogyakarta, namely SMK 5 Yogyakarta. SMK 5 Yogyakarta is a state vocational high school of art and craft, located at Kenari Street no. 71, Mujamuju, Umbulharjo, Yogyakarta. As its motto is “The School of The Art, Enlighten Your Future”, then, its focus is on art and craft as the areas of expertise. The SMK 5 offers seven programs which can be categorized into two different expertises, namely the expertise of kriya or craft and the expertise of technological designs. The programs offered in the school are as follows. The programs of kriya or craft expertise include program keahlian desain dan produksi kriya logam metals craft design and production expertise program, program keahlian desain dan produksi kriya keramik ceramics craft design and production expertise program, program keahlian desain dan produksi kriya tekstil textiles craft design and production expertise program, program keahlian desain dan produksi kriya kulit leather craft design and production expertise program, program keahlian desain dan produksi kriya kayu wooden craft design and production expertise program. The other two programs refer to the expertise of technological design including program keahlian animasi animation expertise program and program keahlian desain komunikasi visual visual communication design expertise program. Since the present research’s focus is on the implementation of technology, the selected populations considered appropriate were then, the programs which emphasize the use of technology in the process of learning and teaching, namely, programs of technological design expertise including animation and visual communication design programs DKV. The populations were the second graders joining those two programs including three classes one class of animation program and two classes of DKV program with the total amount of students were about 105 students. From the total number of population, sixty 60 students from two classes were selected as the research samples. Two classes are randomly selected as samples of the research, one from Animation class which later called as the experiment group and the other one from DKV class as the control group. For English lesson, the allotted time was three times 3x a week within one and an hour 1,5 classroom interaction in each meeting.
