CHAPTER III RESEACH METHODOLOGY

This chapter discusses the methodology applied in conducting the study which provides an explanation of how the study is planned and conducted in order to answer the research questions related to the impact of mobile phone video-making task to improve students’ communicative skills. This chapter is organized into research methodology, research design, nature of data, research setting and participants, data collection instruments, data collection procedures, operation, and data analysis.

A. Research Methodology

In reference to the problem identification of the study, Quantitative approach serves as the strategy of inquiry mostly employed in this study with experiment as its methodology. Experimental research was selected as it fits the aim of answering the first research problem which is to compare two groups before and after treatment of mobile phone video-making tasks. Two groups were randomly selected, one was as the control group and the other one was as the experiment group. The focus of this experimental research is primarily on examining the effect of mobile phone video- making task on experiment group compared to the traditional technique of language instruction, which is oral classroom presentation. Furthermore, the use of experimental methodology is supported by Cohen, et al. 2000 who argues that experimental research is a research aiming at seeing the difference between two groups after they are given different treatment. In line with them, Donald Ary, et al. 2002 states that experimental research is a research in which the researcher manipulates at least one independent variable, controls other relevant variables and observes the effect on one or more dependent variables. They also point out the characteristics of experimental research which are appropriate to the study being conducted. The characteristics include the following which are; an independent variable is manipulated, all other variables that may affect the dependent variable are held constant, and the effect of manipulation of the independent variable on the dependent variable is observed. This research also adopted a Survey Research in order to answer the second research question, ‘what features of mobile phone video-making task contribute to the improvement of students’ communicative skills?’ The selection of survey as the other research method is referred to the second problem which is actually finding out students’ opinions on the implementation of mobile phone video-making task as their classroom and outside classroom activity. According to Creswell 2003, survey employs the use of questionnaires and interview as the data collection instruments and it intends to make a generalization by studying a sample of a population. Nunan 1992: 141 suggests eight stages in conducting a survey research, including: defining objectives, identifying target population, reviewing literature, determining samples, identifying survey instruments, design survey procedures, identifying analytical procedures, and finally determining reporting procedures. To conclude, this research was aimed at revealing the contribution of implementing mobile phone video-making task on the improvement of students’ communicative skill learning achievement and to find out what features provided in the treatment that contribute to the improvement of students’ communicative skill performance. Therefore, this study employed experimental research and survey research as the strategy of inquiry.
