4.1.1 Land Cover Maps from Landsat Data

Three multi temporal images were used to identify land-cover of the study area. Figure 4.2 show the land cover on 1990 coverage area of each class on Palu Catchment. The land cover map of 1990 show that 71.3 of Palu Catchment was covered by forest, 13.6 by shrub land, 10.7 agriculture land, 1.6 barren land, 1.5 by water body, and 1.4 by buildup areasettlement. Forest covers were mostly found on the upper side of the catchment that is part of protected forest of Lore Lindu National Park. The upper side of Palu Catchment is area with mountains and steep slope characteristics. On the upper side of the catchment, there is a lake namely Lindu Lake. During this period, most populations ware settled on the lowland close to the Palu Bay that is a capital of Central Sulawesi Province. Small-scale populations were settled scattered along the way of Palu–Kulawi and Palu-Nopu. Most of the local peoples are working as a farmer, so the agricultural lands were found along its way. a 37 b Figure 4.2 a Land Cover map of 1990, and b Coverage of each land covers class. The land cover maps of 2001 as show in Figure 4.3 shows that during the period of 1990 to 2001 the agricultural activity of local peoples increased. Based on the 2001 map, the catchment was covered 67 by forest, 13 by shrub land, 16.3 as agricultural land, 1.6 barren land, 1.5 water, and 1.7 build up areas or settlement. During this period, some forest area on the catchment was decreased. However, on contrary the decreased forest area the agricultural land increased due to the population activities; local people settled into higher elevations. a 38 b Figure 4.3 a Land Cover map of 2001 and b Coverage of each land covers class For the year of 2009 the forests cover on the catchment decreased rapidly even if only in short period, while the agricultural land is steady. Figure 4.4 presenting the coverage of each land cover class on 2009. The coverage area of each class that are presented on Figure 4.4 indicate the significant increase of agricultural land. This land cover class covers about 26.4 of catchment area while forest is decreasing to 58.8, barren land has covering about 1.6, build up areasettlement has 2, shrub land decreased to 9.7, and water 1.5. a
