others In this thesis, there are 4 data of violations of maxim which use this way in creating the humorous situation. There is no hostility theory applied in the violations of maxim of quantity and manner. a. Violations of Maxim of Quality In this maxim, the writer finds 2 violations of conversational maxims of quality which use this way in creating the humorous situation. Here, the writer highlights one of them while the rest of data can be seen in Appendix 2: Data Nu. Line Nu. Name Dialogue 24. 122. GLADSTONE admiring I must say this er will look very well up on the wall. 123. KRAY Tell you what, Frank, you need a big hat to pin that badge on. Gladstone looks at Kray confusedly. Then, Gladstone and Goody look up at each other with confused face. This conversation happens in Gasforth Police Station between Gladstone and Kray. Here, Gladstone and Goody are bringing the crest. Then, Kray comes and mocks them by saying they need a big hat to pin the crest on their hat. In this datum, the violation of maxim of quality occurs because Kray does not tell the truth in his utterance and it causes the misunderstanding for Gladstone and Goody. Here, Kray actually wants to mock their new royal crest. However, he says in implied meaning that they need a big hat to pin the royal crest on their hat. In order to explain how the violation of maxim of quality creating the humorous situation, the writers use the hostility theory to analyze it. Related with the hostility theory, the humour occurs when there is a feeling of superiority from some persons or communities to the other persons or groups who are considered as the inferior. In the beginning, Kray says that Gladstone needs a big hat to pin the badge on. The fact is the crest should be put on the wall. The uniformed polices use smaller pin to be badged on the hat. Kray says that only as a joke to mock their new royal crest. The audiences can understand that Kray wants to mock Gladstone and Goody because for Kray, putting the royal crest desk is the old style. Here, the irony strategy it has been explained above used to mock Gladstone and Goody. This mockery elicits the laughter which evokes the expression of superiority for the inferior people Gladstone and Goody. b. Violations of conversational Maxims of Relation In this maxim, the writer finds 2 violation of maxim of relation use which use this way in creating the humorous situation. Here, the writer highlights it: Data Nu. Line Nu. Name Dialogue 17. 70. GRIM Were not talking about a honey trap, just a bit of intelligence gathering. C.I.D. cannot operate without intelligence. 71. FOWLER mocking Grim You seem to have managed very well up till now. 72. GRIM shouting warning Listen the bloke is laughing at the law. If youre not careful, divisionll hand it over. And well have the flying squad back. This conversation happens in Gasforth Police Station between Grim and Fowler. Grim is asking Fowler’s help to let Habib acts as a whore to entrap the villain in this police operation. However, Fowler refuses it because this honey trap is against the law. Then, Grim tries to persuade that it is just the intelligent gathering, not to entrap the villain. He utters that C.I.D his department cannot work without Habib’s help in doing the intelligence gathering. Here, the word “intelligence” means the military plans of an enemy etc: intelligence gathering. Grim wants Habib to act as a sexy woman and flirt the suspect the enemy. Therefore, Grim says that this operation lead by him cannot work well without the intelligence gathering from Habib. Fowler responds it by saying “You seem to have managed very well up till now.” His utterance means thatwithout intelligence, Grim still ma nages his work well until now. In Fowler’s utterance, “intelligence” means Grim’s ability his clever mind. Here, Fowler wants to insult Grim that he is not clever since most of his works have no good result. In this datum, the violation of maxim of relation occurs because Fowler’s utterance is not related with Grim’s utterance. Here, Grim is talking that he needs Habib to do the intelligence gathering to do this operation in C.I.D. However, Fowler changes the conversation by saying that C.I.D can still work without Grim’s intelligence until now. In order to explain how the violation of maxim of relation creating the humorous situation, the writers use the hostility theory to analyze it. Related with the hostility theory, the humour occurs when there is a feeling of superiority from some persons or communities to the other persons or groups who are considered as the inferior. In the beginning, Grim asks that he needs Habib to do the intelligence gathering in his entrapment operation. However, Fowler changes the topic of conversation by mocking him “You seem to have managed very well up till now.” He says implicitly to mock Grim. In this part, the sarcasm strategy is used to mock the butt of the joke Grim. Sarcasm is a satirical remark in scorn or contempt, especially one worded ironically. Here, the sarcasm is used to insult Grim’s feeling and elicits the laughter. The audiences’ laughter is the expression of glory and a realization of being superior to the butt of the joke in this case “Grim”. Grim is considered as the inferior because he is often too over in finishing his works and it causes most of his works end badly.
