CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION

To make clear the present study, it is important to discuss a preliminary chapter as the researcher background in this present study. This will be done in chapter 1. This chapter presents some important parts namely; background of the study, statement of the problem, purpose of the study, significance of the study, the scope and limitation and the definition of key term. Each part is presented as below.

1.1 Background of The Study

Language is communication media among people that is used to understand others. It is useful because language has three functions. Firstly, language as formal symbolic system is grammatical rules of combination to communicate meaning. It has structural system that consists of rules about particular signs to particular meanings. Secondly, language as a tool for communication, it can be verbal communication or nonverbal communication. It is used to express feeling of human. Thirdly, language as a unique status of human language. Human have language that different from animal. Human language is more open-ended and productive. English is an international language, and globalization makes English become important. English is an international language used as a tool for communication in daily life and in academics, functional as a first, second or 2 foreign language. In Indonesia, English is as a foreign language and formally it is taught in school from junior high school until university. It has become an obligatory subject and as one of the subjects examined in National examination. Teaching is guiding and facilitating learning, enabling the learner to learn, setting the condition for learning which uses teaching strategies, teaching method, and also teaching techniques. According to Brown 2000, teaching is helping someone to learn how to do something, giving instructions, giving in the study of something, providing with knowledge, causing to know or understand. It is important to help students easy to get knowledge because it can be an act of teacher. Hence, there must be way in teaching. A way that will be more effective and efficient depends on the technique used by the teacher. It is also supported by goal of teaching. English teaching is needed to develop the students ’ language ability. It gives a lot of opportunities to the teacher to know the skill of students. It contains two the big parts, they are receptive and productive skills. Productive skill consists of speaking and writing while receptive skill consists of listening and reading. Speaking is skill that enables people to produce expressing idea and opinion. Speaking is very important to communicate in daily life. However, teacher has a problem to make learner speak English very well. Teacher wants to handle stagnant in speech and changes to master it well. Being a teacher should know good techniques for students. It is supported by Dwi Riana 2012 in her research “Teaching Technique Used by The English Teacher in 3 Teaching Third Grade Students of Raffles international school Balikpapan”. She stated that technique is the way how the teacher delivers the material to students to reach the learning goal. Techniques will determine whether the teaching learning process succeeds or not. Many techniques can be applied in English teaching. Demonstration usually tends to be used by the teacher during learning process since it is effective to teach speaking. It can help student speak up what they look at the picture. However, every teacher should be helpful and acceptable for the students to improve speaking skill. In the class, teacher uses demonstration as technique of teaching speaking. It can solve the difficulties of speaking. It will increase the speaking skill in the teaching and learning process. In this present study, the researcher wants to know what kind of techniques used by the teacher in teaching speaking. For this reason, the researcher is interested to investigate the techniques in teaching speaking. Furthermore, the researcher will observe and interview what are the techniques used by teacher in teaching speaking, and how the teacher apply the techniques. 4
