CHAPTER V CONLUSIONS AND SUGGESTIONS

This chapter consists of two parts: the conclusions of the study and the suggestions for the English teachers or instructors and the future researchers.

A. Conclusions

This research was aimed to design supplementary speaking materials based on Experiential Learning Theory for the Tenth Grade Students of Senior High School. There was one problem in this study: “what is the design of English speaking materials using experiential learning for the tenth grade students of senior high school.” Based on the experiential learning theory used in this study, there were four main sections, however, I added Let’s Warm up as the first section in order to motivate the students’ interest in a topic and to direct the students to the main topic that is going to be learnt. The main four sections were Let’s Experience which contains activities that can develop the students’ skills in speaking, Let’s Share which contains reflection task of the two previous activities, Let’s Practice which contains the task of constructing the theory of the topic, and Let’s Speak which contains speaking task for the students in order to apply their knowledge and understanding that they have got from the previous four parts. The materials were designed based on School-Based Curriculum 2006. The designed materials had eight topics which were taken from the curriculum. They 73 were Getting to Know, Great Vacation, I Can Make It, Great Story, Go With Me? My Favorite Fable, My Dad, and School Punishment.. The activities were taught in form of individual task, pair work, group work, and class discussion. The materials were designed for two semesters. The time allocation for each unit was 2 x 45 minutes 90 minutes. An evaluation was needed in order to know whether the designed materials were applicable and suitable for the tenth grade students of senior high school. The participants were three English teachers of SMA Pangudi Luhur Yogyakarta and two lecturers of the English Education Study Program of Sanata Dharma University. The assessment of respondents’ opinions on the designed materials used five point of agreement. The data were analyzed to find out the average mean. The results showed that the average mean for the designed materials evaluation was 4.1. It means that the designed materials were generally applicable and suitable for the tenth grade students of SMA Pangudi Luhur Yogyakarta. The participants’ feedback, comments, and suggestion were very significant in order to revise the designed materials as the final version product. According to the participants, the designed materials were well-designed and suitable for the tenth grade students of senior high school. The designed materials had various kinds of tasks and media which can help the students understand the materials better. The participants were also gave suggestion for the designed materials. They suggested to provide better pictures which more clearly to understand. For the instruction, they gave suggestion to make the instruction clearer and simpler so that the students understand what they had to do. 74
