1.Conclusions CONCLUSIONS AND SUGGESTIONS

know that novel is one of literary works, which can be enjoyed by reading and get much fun from it, but on the other side novel also teaches us about many things. A novel can teach us about the meaning of life or feeling. The language learners can also get benefits by using the novel to increase their language skills, especially English learners. Therefore, I suggest the lecturers, especially from Sanata Dharma University, to use this novel in teaching English, for example in teaching Reading and Prose II. The next parts, will discuss the implementation of the novel titled Things Fall Apart in language teaching. The first part is the implementation of teaching Reading II and the second part is the implementation of teaching Prose II.

5. 2. 2. 1. The Implementation of Teaching Reading II

One of the skills to be mastered in language learning is reading. Reading becomes a vital thing nowadays, since we get knowledge trough reading. Therefore teaching reading in language teaching is as important as teaching other skills. Teaching reading using this novel as the subject needs intermediate to advanced level students since there are many difficult words and complex grammatical structures. It requires the ability of the students to understand the meaning and to comprehend the text. There are various methods in teaching reading, such as presentation, debate, discussion, role-play, summarizing, note taking and other interesting methods. I choose discussions and summarizing in teaching reading because I think they are the most effective methods to increase the ability in reading. The methods will increase their ability in English indirectly. The implementation of the literary work to teach reading is for the second semester students of the English Education Study Program. Below are the procedures of teaching Reading II: 1. The lecturer gives the pre-reading questions and asks the students to read it. 2. The lecturer gives the passage from Things Fall Apart pp 1-8, and then asks them to answer the pre-reading question. 3. The lecturer and the students discuss the answer of pre-reading questions. 4. The lecturer gives the post-reading questions to the students and asks them to discuss in a group of three. 5. The lecturer asks the students to draw a conclusion about Okonwos character and his problems that makes fear of failure and weakness in a piece of paper. The example of the implementation of the procedures above will be given in Appendix 3, The Implementation of Teaching Reading

5. 2. 2. 2. The Implementation of Teaching Prose II

Prose II is one of the subjects in university level in English Language Education Study Program. This lecture requires the students to appreciate original novels and to put forward their own opinions concerning the contents of the novel. Learning a language through literary work can be enjoyable and fun. Sometimes it reflects on the phenomenon or cultural issues in a certain society. Thus, literary work can be used as a source in teaching Prose II. By using the novel titled Things Fall Apart the lecturer can teache about the characters, the theme, the cultural background of the story, the message from the author, the conflicts, and many more. The lecturer can give the students questions as clues to help them understanding the novel. The implementation of the literary work to teach Prose II is for the fifth semester students of English Education Study Program. Below are the procedures of teaching English through Prose II: 1. The lecturer gives the pre-reading questions and asks the students to read it. 2. The lecturer gives the passage from Things Fall Apart pp 1-8, and then asks them to answer the pre-reading question. 3. The lecturer and the students discuss the answer of pre-reading questions. 4. The lecturer gives the comprehensive questions to the students and asks them to discuss in a group of five. 5. The lecturer asks the students to make a summary of the passage in one paragraph individually. The example of the implementation of the procedures above will be given in Appendix 4, The Implementation of Teaching Prose II, and the material enclosed in the appendices.
