55 writer designed a set of materials for students which is called “Student’s Book” and a book for teacher which corresponds to the one that the students have. The book is called “Teacher’s Manual”. Stage 7: Evaluating the Designed Materials In order that the designed materials best facilitate the learning, the writer evaluated the proposed materials design by distributing a questionnaire to four English teachers of SMP N 8 Yogyakarta and one lecturer of the English Education Study Program of Sanata Dharma University. The writer expected corrections, suggestions and also criticisms from the respondents. The evaluation of the designed materials will be discussed in the second and third part of this chapter. Stage 8: Revising the Materials The last step was to revise the proposed materials design. The revision is based on the feedback given by the respondents. This step is important to do in order that the designed materials are able to facilitate the students to achieve the goals of the program. After finishing the revision, the final version of supplementary reading materials for the seventh grade students of SMP N 8 Yogyakarta could be well- presented.

B. The Findings of the Designed Materials Evaluation

In order to gain evaluations on the designed materials the writer administered a survey. To do this, the writer distributed the designed materials and a questionnaire 56 to the respondents on 8 th December 2006 and collected them on 20 th December 2006. The descriptions of the respondents and data presentation are discussed below. 1. Description of the Respondents of the Post-design Survey There were five respondents in the survey stud y. They were four English teachers of SMP N 8 Yogakarta and one lecturer of the English Education of Sanata Dharma University. The data of the respondents was displayed in Table 7. Data Presentation The data presentation elaborates two parts, namely descriptive statistics of the respondents’ opinions on the designed materials and the respondents’ suggestions on the designed materials.

a. Descriptive Statistics of the Respondents’ Opinions on the Designed

Materials The descriptive statistics presented the results of the writer’s calculation on the data from the evaluation questionnaire using the central tendency measurement. 57 The results were used to revise the designed materials. The descriptive statistics of the respondents’ opinions on the designed materials were presented in Table 8. b. Respondents’ Opinions on the Designed Materials

The writer provided some spaces for respondents to give their opinions, comments and suggestions. There were some opinions given by the respondents on the designed materials, in terms of the strengths and weaknesses. According to the respondents, the designed materials had some strength. The y said that the topics were interesting and familiar to the students. The respondents found some good points from the presentation of the materials, such as the colorful pictures and texts, clear instruction, adequate exercises. Moreover, the activities showed an integrative learning. They believe the materials attracted the learners to learn. However, the materials had some weaknesses. Some of the colo rs were too bright so that it was hard to read. There were some minor grammatical mistakes and mistyped words. The texts were not neatly written. Some of the instructions were too long and difficult to understand. Several vocabularies were a bit difficult for the seventh grade students. The lists of vocabularies were not sufficient. Some materials were not suitable for the seventh grade students and they had no relation to the existing curriculum. In general, the overall materials were well developed. The students would be able to understand them. The materials challenged the students to learn reading and the other competencies: writing, listening, as well as speaking. However, the writer still needed to improve the designed materials. 59

c. Respondents’ Suggestions on the Designed Materials

Suggestions were valuable to improve the designed materials in order to make the final version of the designed materials. The respondents suggested to the writer some points as presented below. 1. One respondent suggested providing a lesson plan to help the teachers understand the time allocation, the division of pre, whilst and post activities. 2. Two respondents suggested the writers give models of the texts which can help the students to create their own texts. 3. One respondent stated that it would be better if the writer provided more activities which involve other skills than reading. 4. One respondent suggested providing more vocabularies. 5. One respondent suggested providing more grammar pit stops especially the ones that were frequently used in the text. 6. One respondent suggested the writer to relate the materials to the existing curriculum. 7. There were some minor grammatical mistakes and mistyped words which needed to be revised. 8. One respondent suggested changing the too-bright colored-fonts into more eye friendly colors. 9. One respondent suggested the writer type the materials more neatly. 60
