B. The Problems of the Study

The problems of the study were formulated in the following questions: 1. What types of the cultural expressions were found in the original and Indonesian version of The Walking Dead: Rise of the Governor? 2. What translation procedures were used to translate the cultural expressions into the Indonesian version of The Walking Dead: Rise of the Governor?

C. The Objectives of the Study

In relation to the problem of the study as stated above, the objectives of the study are: 1. To find out the types of the cultural expressions found in the original and Indonesian version of The Walking Dead: Rise of the Governor 2. To find out and describe the translation procedures used to transfer the cultural expressions into the Indonesian version of The Walking Dead: Rise of the Governor.

D. The Scope of the Study

To avoid an overlapping and misleading discussion, the study would be focused on analyzing the cultural expressions found in the original and the Indonesian version of The Walking Dead: Rise of the Governor.

E. The Significance of the Study

The study is expected to give valuable contribution theoretically and practically. Theoretically, the findings of the study are expected to contribute on the development of translation study, especially on how translation is applied in transferring cultural expressions in literary work, especially translated novel. Meanwhile, practically the findings of the study are supposed to be useful for the following people: 1. The translators may use this study as a reference to them in translating the English novel into the Indonesian version, so that they can produce the better quality of Indonesian literary works. 2. The students and readers can use the study as a guidance to learn about the translation of cultural expressions in literary works, especially translated novel. 3. The other reseachers can use the study as one of the relevant studies and guide them in making the translation of cultural expressions in literary works, especially novel. 76

CHAPTER V CONCLUSIONS AND SUGGESTIONS

A. Conclusions

Based on the result of the study dealing with the analysis of the types of cultural expressions and the translation procedures used in both the original and the Indonesian version of The Walking Dead: Rise of the Governor novel, there are some main points that can be considered as the conclusions of the study, they are: 1. Based on the 117 cultural words and phrases which have been collected and analyzed, it was found that the fifth types of cultural expressions proposed by Newmark were realized in the novel with the number of 50 items 42,74 for material culture, 27 items 23,08 for ecology, 22 items 18,80 for organizations, customs, activities, procedures, and concepts, 17 items 14,53 for social culture, and 1 item 0,85 for gestures and habits. 2. Based on the 117 cultural words and phrases which have been collected and analyzed, it was found that from the 18 translations procedures proposed by Newmark, there were only 10 of them which were applied to translate the cultural words and phrases from English into Indonesian, they are 58 items 49,57 for transference, 21 items 17, 95 for expansion, 9 items 7,69 for through-translation, 8 items 6,84 for couplets, 7 items 5,98 for naturalisation, 6 items 5,13 for cultural equivalent, with the 4 items 3,42 functional equivalent, 2 items 1,71 for synonymy, 1 item 0,85 for componential analysis,and 1 items 0,85 for paraphrase.

B. Suggestions

In relation to the conclusions, some suggestions are given as following: 1. The students of English Department are expected to explore and learn more about the role of culture in translation studies to broaden their insight. 2. The translators that focus on translating literary works are expected to learn and have deeper understanding about the role of culture and the translation procedures used to translate cultural aspects in order that they can produce the better quality of translated literary works. 3. The other researcher is expected to conduct further studies about the role of culture in translation studies as the contribution to the education field and as the reference to the ones who want to learn more about translation concept.
