4.1.2.2 The Appraisal System in Excerpt 2

Unlike excerpt 1, this excerpt has various kinds of the appraisal and comment adjunct. The biggest number of the appraisals in excerpt 2 as shown in the table 4.1.3 is about judgment. However, the number of the judgment -cap or unwise is bigger than the judgment +cap or wise. This excerpt also contains minor occurrences of the affect -hap and -sat and appreciation +comp and - val that are part of the desirability in comment adjuncts. They are related with Mavis’ feeling, thought, and physical condition. In addition, this excerpt includes the prediction but the unpredictable one. First, the judgment or wisdom in excerpt 2 is employed to give comment about Mavis and the other characters’ capacity from Mavis’ perspective. M.2.4a Bennie was smart. judgment +cap M.2.5 Mavis felt her stupidity close in on her head…judgment - cap M.2.6a A grown woman who could not cross the country. judgment -cap M.2.6b Could not make a plan that accommodated more than twenty minutes. judgment -cap M.2.8 Frank was right. Judgment +cap M.2.9b she was the dumbest bitch on the planet. Judgment -cap As seen from the examples above, the appraised in the judgment +cap or wise is the other characters M.2.4a and M.2.8 while the appraised in the judgment - cap or unwise is always Mavis in M.2.5, M.2.6a, M.2.6b, and M.2.9b. It means that even in Mavis’s opinion, she was incapable of doing anything. She also agreed with Frank, her husband, about this thought. In contrast, she thought that the other characters were better than her. Second, the types of the affect or desirability that occur in excerpt 2 illustrate about Mavis’s feeling. All of them have negative attitude, and the appraiser in each example is Mavis. M.2.1b … she was ravenous because the sun affect -sat M.2.11 …, and decided not to starve. affect -sat M.2.10 … she dozed, woke to awful thoughts, … affect -hap From the example above, this excerpt portrays her extreme hunger and suffering OALD8 as in M.2.1b and M.2.11 through the affect -sat or undesirable dissatisfaction since she cannot fulfill physical need. It also reflects her unhappiness through the affect -hap or undesirable luck as the result of her physical and mental condition M.2.10. Next, appreciation in excerpt 2 consists of the appreciation +comp or desirable composition and appreciation -val or undesirable valuation which express Mavis’s appreciation toward herself M.2.1b, a thing M.2.1b, and the surrounding M.2.2. M.2.1a Mavis woke felt-mouthed, ugly … appreciation -val M.2.1b … watermelon red, looked edible. appreciation +comp M.2.2 The screaming blue horizon that surrounded her was minus invitation or reproach … appreciation +comp and -val The appraised in the example can be herself M.2.1b, a thing M.2.1b, and her surrounding M.2.2 while the appraiser is only Mavis. Similar with the negative judgment that she gave to herself, Mavis also labels herself with negative valuation. As for the appreciation +comp in which watermelon as the appraised, it helps to create the effect of Mavis’s distress because she is extremely hungry, and as the result of her physical condition, she feels also that the blue horizon is not exiting or not so striking and conspicuous MWCD11. Last, prediction unpredictable as part of the comment adjuncts appears in this excerpt creates the effect of sudden realization. M.2.11 Suddenly she sat up, wide awake, and decided not to starve. unpredictable Suddenly as explained in OALD8 is quickly and unexpectedly. Hence, M.2.11 above illustrates that in very short time, Mavis realizes something that is more important than her condition at that time. It also seems that the realization unexpectedly strikes her mind. Thus, the readers will be carried to something that Mavis never expects, simple thing such as the lost of her raincoat because of a hitchhiker, simple thing that, again, supports her incapability.
