ABSTRACT

Kurnianto, Bonifasius Puguh. 2015. Evaluation on the Acceptability of Swear Words Translation in Indonesian Subtitle Found in Crank 2: High Voltage. Yogyakarta: English Language Education Study Program, Sanata Dharma University.

Swearing is a form of speech existing in every human language. Many people tend to use swear words in nowadays interaction and daily conversation to communicate and to build relationship with others. One obvious example that could be seen where people do swearing was in a movie. Although sometimes movies were faking, most of the scripts and dialogues were made to as close as daily life conversation, where people can freely express their anger, frustration, and emotion by swearing.

This research is preliminary research of a pragmatics study which concern with the translation product of swear words in Indonesian subtitle of a certain movie. The main problem discussed in this study was the acceptability of that very product. There were two instruments used in conducting this research. First, a human instrument or the researcher himself. He was collecting the data needed all by himself. Second, the document instruments, which were the transcripts of both English and Indonesian subtitles of the movie Crank 2: High Voltage.

In order to gain the answer of the problem, the first step was to sort and choose some parts of the English subtitles which contain swear words. After that, the English subtitles were compared to the translation product in Indonesian subtitles. It was then assessed right away by classifying it based on Larson’s (1984) ideal translation criteria. According to this theory, a translation is considered acceptable if it has two out of three from the following criteria: Accurate (A), Natural (N), and Clear (C). Yet, it would be categorized as Ideal Acceptable, Acceptable, Unacceptable, and Failed.

From the discussion of this study, the researcher found the result that there were over 76% acceptable translation. The weaknesses of the translation lied on the lack of understanding of word organization and failed to heed to the expression shown by the character. However, it was only a preliminary project and a premature judgment. It was possible for this study to be improved in the following future. Keywords: swear words, ideal translation, acceptability, Crank 2: High Voltage

1 CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION

In this chapter the writer discusses the research background and the research method. In the background, the writer establishes the reason for choosing this topic, the investigated problem and a brief introduction of Swear Words, purposes of swearing, translation and the movie entitled Crank 2: High Voltage. As for the research method, it contains the description of samples and the procedures.

A. Background

Swearing is a form of speech existing in every human language. Swear words or dirty words, though they are considered as an inappropriate and offensive language has now being used in conversational activity to convey one‟s expression. Jay (2009) implies that swearing is like using the horn on a car, which can be used to signify a number of emotions (e.g., anger, frustration, joy, and surprise). Many people tend to use swear words in nowadays interaction and daily conversation to communicate and to build relationship with others.

However, there is a fine line which people should not recklessly cross; that is social etiquette. According to Keating (2006) the "fact that swearing is a part of everyday life means that we need to navigate a way through a day in the office without offending anyone, while still appreciating that people do swear.” In the work place, people will find it odd if one swears to address others whom one

(15)

hardly knows. Farther, Keating (2006) adds that the site stresses that swearing is, in general, more problematic in asymmetric situations, such as in the presence of senior management or clients. Regarding to this matter, people are more comfortable and are more likely to use technical terms for sexual references in mixed crowds, and to reserve the taboo words for same sex crowds or with their sexual partner („damnit will be more preferable than „fuck‟) (Jay, 2009). In short, they feel more apt to use less offensive terms which might result in recrimination situation.

1. Swear Words

It has come to recognition that swearing exists in every mode of speech in human language. As it is commonly used in various ways of conversational activity, swear words have been brought up in linguistic studies. Many writers had conveyed their findings regarding to swearing and cursing used in daily conversation.

Angrier (2005) notes that swearing and cursing perform certain social and psychological function, and utilize particular linguistic and neurological mechanism. She also states:

Swearing is a widespread but perhaps underappreciated anger management technique; that "men generally curse more than women, unless said women are in a sorority and that university provosts swear more than librarians or the staff members of the university day care center" and that linguistic research has shown that the physiological reactions of individuals who are proud of their education are similar between exposure to obscene words and exposure to bad grammar.

Which means people perform and utilize their speech of swearing depending on several factors, like gender, occasion, and education level. According to her

(16)

finding, those who swear a lot tend to have lack of emotional control. Still based on her finding, men are literally used offensive words more than women do, and that of who work on the field have more cursing in their speech rather than those who work behind desk. People with high education background will be least to swear or curse in the midst of crowd or working place, compared to those whose education background are lower.

Stephens, Atkins, and Kingston (2009) revealed a more positive point of view in sighting swear words. They found that this offensive language is not merely to express emotions or just simply to communicate but instead, to relieve physical pain. Stephens (2009) said "I would advise people, if they hurt themselves, to swear"

Another writer who investigated swear words is Grohol (2009). He mentioned that “Swear words can also be used in a more positive manner, in the form of jokes and humor, sex talk, storytelling, self-deprecation or even social commentary”. Thus, it can be concluded that it is not always negative, not deliberate action, but implicitly establish succinct excitement, for example “this movie is fucking terrific!”It can be simpler just by saying “this movie is terrific”, but according to Grohol (2009) “the addition of the swear word emphasizes the emotional reaction we have toward it — and easily conveys that emotional reaction to others.”

2. Crank 2: High Voltage

Crank2: high voltage is a 2009 American black comedy action and a sequel to the previous movie, Crank, in 2006. Both movies were written and

(17)

directed by Neveldine and Taylor. The story of this movie goes immediately after the very last event in the previous movie. As Chev Chelios (Jason Statham) fell from a helicopter and landed on a car, bounced and hit the asphalt in the middle of a crowded intersection in Los Angeles, he was then scooped off from the scene by Triad (Chinese mafia).

Chev woke up in a damp, makeshift hospital held by the Triads. While he was half awake, he saw the doctors performing an operation on him. The doctors cut open his chest and removed his heart out of its place and replaced it with an artificial heart. In that room there was also Johnny Vang (Art Hsu) who watched the operation, and he was the one who had Chelios‟ heart. Sometime later he woke up and tried to get out of that place. As he did so, some Triad underlings spotted him and started a gunfight. After some shooting and killing, he then interrogated a survived thug and learned about his heart‟s whereabouts. He snatched a car and called Doctor Miles (Dwight Yoakam) to tell him about what was going on.

Having learned his situation from doc miles, Chev rushed on a pursuit to Jonny Vang. The pursuit took place in an entire suburb down in LA. Many incidents occurred upon Chev Chelios during the run. First, he got accident and lost the battery belt for the artificial heart, so he asked a driver to electrify him. The driver also told him that Jonny Vang was in Cypress Social Club. Soon after, he stormed the club but he missed Jonny. He got out the club and hooked up with a Chinese whore, Ria (Bai Ling) who told him Jonny Vang whereabouts‟. She pointed out that Jonny Vang was hanging around in a strip house. In that place he

(18)

met Eve (Amy Smart), his girlfriend, who now became a strip dancer. Long story short, Chev unexpectedly started another gun fight in the club with Mexican gangster who hold a grudge against Chev for killing their boss in the previous movie. After the gunfight, he found himself surrounded by the fuzz and he fought the whole squad and stole one police car to continue his pursuit on Jonny. Soon, he learned Jonny‟s whereabouts from a stripper he hooked up. As he was still chase by the police, he was saved and given a ride by Venus (Efren Ramirez), a twin brother of his late acquaintance, Kaylo. Venus suggested that Chev should try to look for Jonny at a horse track.

When they got there, Chev‟s condition was getting worse, so he called

Doc Miles. The doctor told him to keep himself electrify, or else the artificial heart will stop working, and one easiest way was to get a friction to produce a static electricity to the internal battery. So then, a shocking incident happened. Chev and Eve were having sex in the middle of the race track, but suddenly Chev saw Jonny in the audience seat and chased after him, leaving Eve butt naked alone in the track. While chasing after Jonny and being pursuit by the security, Chev crossed path a Triad boss named Don Kim (Keone Young). Through the mafia boss, Chev learned the purpose behind his agony and excruciating experience for losing his heart. It was to be transplanted to the Triad‟s Godfather named Poon Dong (David Carradine). In short, Chev killed Don Kim and his henchmen, because he was about to bring Chev back to Poon Dong. When Chev spotted Jonny, he ran after him and they fought in a power plant site. Chev discovered that

(19)

Chev‟s heart had already been transplanted into Poon Dong, and he said he would

locate Poon Dong to retrieve Chev‟s heart. Jonny was shot by Chico as he was

being interrogated, and Chev himself was knocked unconscious and dragged behind a speedboat to an island where El Huron awaited.

El Huron held a grudge against Chev Chelios for him, in fact, is Alex and

Ricky Verona‟s brother, both of whom was murdered by Chelios in the first

movie. However, Ricky Verona‟s head was possibly enough to be kept alive because El Huron wanted Ricky to witness him killing Chev Chelios. Suddenly, Venus, Ria and a gang of gunfighters showed up and started to make a mess. After some strenuous fight, Chev‟s heart was starting to run slow. So, he climbed up a telephone pole and grabbed a pair of high voltage wires and got blasted away and got burnt. While he‟s on fire, he killed El Huron.

In the end part of the movie, Doc Miles was able to retrieve Chev‟s heart and tried to put it back in. However, Chev suffered from a fatal burn all over his body. The operation seemed to be a failure but Chev was able to open his eyes eventually.

B. Research Problem

Research problem for this paper is:

How is Acceptability of Swear Words Translation in Indonesian Subtitle Found in Crank 2: High Voltage?

C. Research Method

The result of this research will not only be shown in the form of tables and direct answers, but also followed by explanations afterward. Thus, the method

(20)

used in this research is qualitative research, which according to Hansen (2005) is a method that relies on experiences and phenomena that need to be interpreted and explained. In this research, analysis of the data will not be different. The writer will give brief explanation of every finding in his research. Hence, descriptive-qualitative research is applied to this paper. Merriam (2002) defined that descriptive-qualitative research is used when data collected through interviews, observations, or document analysis were analyze to identify the pattern of the data.

This research was conducted through a document analysis method, for the subject of this research is a script of a movie subtitle. Document analysis, according to Ary, Jacobs, Razavieh, and Sorensen (2010) is a method which is used when one wants to analyze any physical documents, in the form of written or visual materials in order to identify specific data. Since the data gathered in this research is in form of physical document, which in this case is a script of movie subtitle, thus the writer decided to use a document analysis method to gain the expected result. By applying this method, the writer is expecting to grasp the answer on the acceptability of swear words translation in Indonesian subtitle of the movie Crank 2: High Voltage.

There are three major steps of analysis to follow in conducting this research. These steps, as presented by Creswell (2007), are as follows:

1. Preparing and organizing

In this step, the writer printed both script of English and Indonesian subtitle without being edited. Hereafter, he adjusted the timeline of the script (due

(21)

to some of the conversations are in Chinese, the movie editors put an English subtitle permanently attach in the scenes, while the Indonesian subtitle has to translate that too. This is what makes the Indonesian subtitle a bit longer)

2. Coding

The scripts were read then chosen. Only those which consist of swear words were chosen to be analyzed. The writer also watched the movie and the expressions of the characters as they were swearing to grasp the idea of the swearing itself. This was done because the expression might affect the translation result in the Target Language.

3. Representing the data

After choosing the transcript, both scripts were presented in tables, so that it would be easier for the writer to analyze and assess. The way to assess the translation is to analyze the translation product based on three criteria suggested by Larson (1984). They are:

- Accurate (A) : reproducing the same meaning and maintaining the message of conversation from SL to TL.

- Natural (N) : using natural expressions with appropriate kind of texts occurs in TL

- Clear (C) : expressing all aspects in acceptable forms and clear meanings, so that it is understandable for TL audiences.

(22)

9 CHAPTER II DISCUSSION

In this chapter the writer focuses on the review of related literature and research findings used to gain the answer of the formulated problem. There are two parts discuss in this chapter. First is review of related literature which presents theories to ignite exploration of the issue. Second is the finding on the answer of the acceptability of swear word translation in Indonesian subtitle found in the movie Crank 2: High Voltage.

A. Review of Related Literature

In this section, the writer exposes some related theories which may trigger farther discussion of the problem. Some theories used in this paper such as experts‘ point of view of the essence of swear words, translation of swear words, and audio-visual translation.

1. The Essence of Swear Words

In this part, the writer discusses the theories concerning swear words, which includes theory of pragmatics and definitions and explanations of swear words according to some expert.

(23)

a. Theory of Pragmatics

A clear definition of pragmatics is stated by Dynel (2011),‖Pragmatic is a field of linguistic that is addressing communicative process as developed by its users and its relation to language form related to the cognitive and socio cultural study of language use. Since the main focus in this study is conversation of a movie which has two different languages in its subtitle, the general theory of pragmatics becomes the major theory to help the writer in this study.

In order to make a good conversation, there are certain rules to follow. By obeying the rules, one can conduct and deliver the right information in an effective and efficient use of language. Just as Grice (1989) stated,‖ make your conversational contribution such as is required, at the stage at which it occurs, by the accepted purpose or direction of the talk exchange in which you are engaged.‖

Grice (1989) also stated that in cooperative principle, there are four categories known as Maxims of Conversation. These categories are Maxim of Quantity, Maxim of Quality, Maxim of Manner, and Maxim of Relevance

Maxim of quantity is all about the amount of information given by the speaker. Based on that, this maxim has to different possibilities: (1) information given is less than it‘s needed, and (2) the information given should be informative as possible.

Maxim of quality is to ensure that the speaker has given the right information to the audience. Under this maxim there are two conditions to fulfill in order to make

(24)

a good conversation: (1) the speaker must not lie, and (2) the speaker must have evidence to back up his talks

In maxim of manner, it is important to be perspicuous or easy to understand. There are various maxim beneath this, as Grice mentioned: (1) avoid obscurity expression, (2) avoid ambiguity, (3) be brief, and (4) be orderly

This paper talks about English swear words and its translation product in Indonesia. So, it is only natural that most of the either swear word contain those maxim, and quite possibly, the violation as well. However, the problem in this paper does not mention anything about the correlation between swear words and those maxims. So, the writer only focuses on the acceptability of the swear words translation.

b. An Overview of Swear Words

Speech act is an important part to construct a conversation. Swear words, however, has shown a great deal of contribution to nowadays language varieties. As a part of speech mode, swear words, though it seems to be an inappropriate, rude and offensive language, serves certain purposes. Jay (2009) draws a concept of swear word by analogy with a horn of a car. Saying that swearing is like using the horn of a car, he indicates that swear word is some kind of warning from one to other people around that one wants to signify his/her emotion like anger, frustration, joy, excitement and surprise.

(25)

In 2005, an American journalist Natalie Angrier wrote an article about swearing and cursing language; "Cursing is a normal function of human language, experts say". In that article she stated that swearing and cursing perform certain social and psychological function, and utilize particular linguistic and neurological mechanism. Based on her article, swearing has some limitation in terms of use to some group of people.

Psychologically speaking, men tended to swear more than women do, unless said women are in a sorority, for there is a tendency of men lacking in anger management technique (Grohol, 2009). The frequency of a person to swear is also affected by the kind of job he/she has. Angrier (2005) argued that university provosts swear more than librarians or the staff members of the university day care center. It simply said that people who work in the field and have more encounter with another people might enclose swearing in their speech. On the contrary, people who work behind desk may have better manner and will pay a lot of attention in deliberating their speech.

Angrier (2005) noted that

Swearing is a widespread but perhaps underappreciated anger management technique; that "men generally curse more than women, and that university provosts swear more than librarians or the staff members of the university day care center" and that linguistic research has shown that the physiological reactions of individuals who are proud of their education are similar between exposure to obscene words and exposure to bad grammar.

(26)

According to Keating (2006) the "fact that swearing is a part of everyday life means that we need to navigate a way through a day in the office without offending anyone, while still appreciating that people do swear.‖ In the work place, people will find it odd if one swears to address others whom one hardly knows. Farther, Keating (2006) adds that the site stresses that swearing is, in general, more problematic in asymmetric situations, such as in the presence of senior management or clients. Regarding to this matter, people are more comfortable and are more likely to use technical terms for sexual references in mixed crowds, and to reserve the taboo words for same sex crowds or with their sexual partner (‗damnit will be more preferable than ‗fuck‘) (Jay, 2009). In short, they feel more apt to use less offensive terms which might resulted in recrimination situation.

The writers from Keele University, Stephens, Atkins, and Kingston (2009) revealed a more positive point of view in sighting swear words. They found that this offensive language is not merely to express emotions or just simply to communicate but instead, to relieve physical pain. Stephens (2009) said "I would advise people, if they hurt themselves, to swear"

Another writer who investigated swear words is Dr. John Grohol (2009). He mentioned that ―Swear words can also be used in a more positive manner, in the form of jokes and humor, sex talk, storytelling, self-deprecation or even social commentary‖. Thus, it can be concluded that it is not always negative, not deliberate action, but implicitly establish succinct excitement, for example ―this movie is

(27)

fucking terrific!‖ It can be simpler just by saying ―this movie is terrific‖, but according to Grohol (2009) ―the addition of the swear word emphasizes the emotional reaction we have toward it — and easily conveys that emotional reaction to others.‖ Even sometimes, swear word can be used praise someone though it may sound ironic

EXCERPT 2.1

The conversation below was taken from the script of Expendable 2

A group of mercenary; Gunner, Caesar, Toll Road and Billy “The Kid” are sitting together in a pub. Christmas Lee, his girlfriend and Barney sit at different table, then Barney leaves and joins Gunner and the rest. Caesar : Look who‘s lost in space

Gunner : (talk to Barney) got any pen? (Barney takes out the pen with skull carved on it)

Christmas Lee : Hey, you got anything that doesn‘t have skulls on it? Barney : As a matter of fact, I don‘t (Give the pen to Gunner) (Gunner writes some formula on a paper)

Gunner : Einstein‘s theory of spatial relativity. But we have made it better (he uses the paper to wipe his snot)

Barney : Believe it or not before Gunner became chemically unbalanced he went to MIT and had a Master degree in chemical engineering.

Toll Road : This idiot actually had a brain, can you believe that? (Si bodoh ini sesungguhnya pintar, kau percaya itu?)

2. Translation of Swear Words

Translating swear words or cursing or rude word or even insult, is not a simple matter. There are things to reconsider before transferring swear word from one language or source language (SL) to designated target language (TL). According to Robert Vanderplank (2007), ―Listening out for insults and curses may provide us with as many insights into the local culture as observing local manners and customs.‖

(28)

Things like cultural and social background, politeness, etiquette, morality, etc. are the biggest obstacle in producing an ideal and acceptable swear words translation. Yet, the biggest challenge in translating swear word is to maintain the meaning and also to stimulate the very same expression from SL to TL.

In translation, there are several methods that can be used, and some of them are pretty easy to use. Such as the 8 translation methods in V diagram by Newmark (1988).

SL emphasis TL emphasis

Word for word translation Adaptation

Literal translation Free translation

Faithful translation Idiomatic translation Semantic translation communicative translation

However, in translating swear words, translators frequently used their instinct rather than using the guideline when dealing with problems, especially in translation cultural matter. It is truly a challenge for any translator, because their job is to deliver a message from SL to TL without degenerate the meaning, so that the TL audiences can feel the same sense and emotion as the SL audiences do.

The success rate of a translation product is varied, depends on the audiences perception and understanding. Despite that, Larson (1984) proposed criteria of an ideal translation.

- Accurate (A) : reproducing the same meaning and maintaining the message of conversation from SL to TL.

(29)

TL

- Clear (C) : expressing all aspects in acceptable forms and clear meanings, so that it is understandable for TL audiences.

3. Audio Visual Translation (AVT)

Due to the rapid development of technology, it is also going along with the revolution of the translation means. As it is, the translation materials is not limited in textual or written text, but it brought up to a new level; audio visual materials. The materials include speech, TV shows, sitcoms, movies, interviews, advertisement and many others.

There are much more viewers of cinematic production than translated books readers, thus, AVT can successfully convey very strong message which may have everlasting effect on receivers (Alabbasi, 2009). According to Orero (2004):

AVT will encompass all translation – or multisemiotic transfer – for production and postproduction in any media or format, and also the new areas of media accessibility: subtitling for the deaf ans the hard of hearing and audio description for the blind and the visually impaired. (p. viii)

a. Subtitling

Alabbasi (2009) stated that ―subtitling is a process of transferring the meaning of a piece of speech in a movie or TV series by means of written translation usually, placed at the bottom of screen.‖ The product of subtitling process is called subtitle.

(30)

According to Thompson (2000) is ―texts read by viewer while they are disengage to some degree from both the visual and audio of a film

The art of translating is quite challenging. There are at least three factors that needs more attention to pay. First, the effectiveness of language use without changing the meaning of message. In translating from a subtitle, diction is important. Second, the length of the text. Ideally, subtitle only takes two line for each frame or screen. The translators must be able to make the translation product as brief as possible. Third is the timing. It requires a translator‘s ability to show the text long enough before the conversation change. Hence, the effectiveness and the length of the text cannot be ignored.

According to Baker (2001:245) four elements of the subtitled film or TV shows shall be taken into consideration simultaneously

1. Verbal auditory channel, including dialogue, background voices, and sometime lyric

2. Non - verbal auditory channel, music, natural sound, sound effect 3. Verbal visual channel, superimposed titles, and written signs 4. Non - verbal visual channel, picture composition and flow

Alabbasi noted that the first element, the verbal auditory content is the most important because it covers the spoken message regardless of how this message is delivered

There are two major type of subtitling based on Alabbasi (2009), which each one is intended to reach certain objective

(31)

This type of subtitling takes place within the same language whereby the spoken form is the original and the written form is the translated or transferred version. This intra lingual subtitling targets the deaf and those with hearing problems and the beginner learners of the spoken language to improve their communication skills, composition, spelling, and style 2. Inter lingual subtitling

Subtitling here is carried out between two diversified languages, the first one is spoken and the second is written. The translator transferred speech in one language to writing in another and changes both mode and language

b. Dubbing

Alabbasi (2009) explained ―The dubbed movie or TV series may look like the original and all viewers both literate, illiterate and children can understand and enjoy watching them. According to Orero (2004), it is more complex than subtitling, since dubbing requires many factors to be considered such as: lip, kinetic and isochronic synchrony into the bargain. The dubbed also need to follow a close track of the timing, lip movement and the vocal expression.

B. Interpretation of the Finding

In this section, the writer discusses the research finding used to answer the problem formulated about the acceptability of swear words translation in Indonesian

(32)

subtitle found in Crank 2: High Voltage. The data were taken by comparing two subtitles of the movie Crank 2: High Voltage. English and Indonesian subtitle. The result of this research is gained by measuring the acceptability of the data using the theory of ideal translation from Larson (1984). Based on this theory, a translation product worthy named as an ideal translation if the product possess the three categories:

- Accurate (A) : reproducing the same meaning and maintaining the message of conversation from SL to TL.

- Natural (N) : using natural expressions with appropriate kind of texts occurs in TL

- Clear (C) : expressing all aspects in acceptable forms and clear meanings, so that it is understandable for TL audiences.

After identifying the subtitles, they are categorized. Larson (1984) also proposed a set of categorization to classify the translation products. If a translation meets all the category (A, N, and C) it is both Ideal and Acceptable (I-Acc). If it has two out of the three category it is categorized as Acceptable (Acc). If it only possess one out of the three either it‘s A, or N or C it is considered as Unacceptable (Uncc). Then, if a translation possessing none of the criteria, thus it is Failed (F). The following table shows the result of the calculation

(33)

No Category Frequency Percentage 1 Ideal-Acceptable (I-Acc) 72 61.02%

2 Acceptable (Acc) 18 15.25%

3 Unacceptable (Uncc) 11 9.32%

4 Failed (F) 17 14.41%

TOTAL 118 100%

Here is an example of (I- Acc) EXCERPT 2.2

Scene: Chev is driving while having a conversation with doc Miles through cellphone Doc Miles : you got an artificial heart? (With having a laugh)

Chev : Do you think I'm having a fuckin' laugh? (Kau pikir aku sedang bercanda?)

The translation was considered as Ideal Acceptable because it was accurate, natural and clear. It was easy enough to understand, because, although it was translated using a synonym, the meaning itself does not change. The translation accurately hi the spot in the TL, since the message is the same. It is also natural in both tone and facial expression. The character Chev was shouting and raised his tone because he was not in the mood of joking. The same expression is also applicable in the TL. Even without any swearing in Indonesian, people can still make their point just by shouting it.

The 15.25% from the overall swearword measured is Acceptable. The category Acc occurs when a translation possess two category Accurate-Natural (A, N), Accurate-Clear (A, C), or Natural Clear (N, C). Here are the examples.

(34)

EXCERPT 2.3

Scene: Scene: Chev was running after Jonny Vang, but there were also racetrack security chasing after Chev. Outside the racetrack, he crossed path with Don Kim’s car. Don Kim invited him in and they had a conversation. Don Kim : ……Then word spread out that there was a man who had a

heart so powerful that he was capable of surviving even our most deadliest of poisons.

Chev : Yeah, the Chinese shit. (ya, racun Cina) Don Kim : Yes.

The example above has only accuracy and natural. The term ―shit‖, generally means something disgusting, but in this case it referred to a poison which is also a nasty stuff. However the way it infers ‗the Chinese shit‘ into ‗racun Cina, is not clear because in Indonesia it could be ambiguous and some people might interpret it as ‗poison to kill Chinese.‘ Larson (1984) mentioned that this kind of translation is an Unclear Translation.

EXCERPT 2.4

Scene: Chev was running after Jonny Vang, but there were also racetrack security chasing after Chev. Outside the racetrack, he crossed path with Don Kim’s car. Don Kim invited him in.

Don Kim : Ah..Chev Chelios

Chev : Don motherfucking Kim (Don Kim)

The translation above only possessing the accuracy and clarity and is missing one category, which is Natural. Although it seem more appropriate language, but it‘s missing its natural expression. In the movie, Chev is a little bit upset for loosing Jonny Vang, and he‘s a bit surprise to meet Don Kim, whom he had a clash against in

(35)

the previous movie. So, aside from his character, it‘s only natural for Chev to swear. A translation that only has its Accurate and Clear criteria is an Unnatural Translation (Larson, 1984)

EXCERPT 2.5

Scene: Chev is having a conversation with Doc Miles

Chev : These Triad motherfuckers cut out my fuckin' heart (Geng Triad sialan itu membawa jantungku)

That is the example of a translation that opt-out the accurate criteria, or at least, it is considered that the accuracy is a so-so. The term ‗motherfuckers‘ here is very rude to address someone, but here it was translated to ‗sialan‘ which commonly inferred as ‗damn it‘ or ‗shit.‘Even though, in Indonesia, the word ‗sialan‘ is enough to make someone upset, but here the degree of being ‗motherfucker‘ is decreasing. According to Larson (1984) this kind of translation is considered as Inaccurate Translation.

When a translation only possess one out of three categories it became Unacceptable translation. Based on the writer‘s calculation there were only 9.32% in which the Unacceptable translation occurred. Here is the case:

EXCERPT 2.6

Scene: Chev was jumping onto Jonny Vang’s car in the parking area

Chev : Did I drop some change or did I hear a chink? Jonny : Fuck you, man!

(36)

Chev : Yeah, fuck me? (Ya, sialan aku? )

From the conversation above, the only category involved was the Accurate. It missed the natural expression and it is a bit confusing and a little awkward to hear.

As for the last it was the failed translation. It is a translation which possess none of the category. There are 17 cases or 14.41% found in the overall translation.

EXCERPT 2.7

Scene: Chev is consulting with Doc Miles through cellphone whether he could put Chev’s heart in its rightful place

Doc Miles : Hey, Chev I'm a certified heart surgeon.

Well, I... I was. I lost my license after I fucked up my ex-wife's vaginal rejuvenation procedure in our basement.

(Aku kehilangan izin itu setelah kukerjai vagina mantan isteriku di basement kami.)

The example above was a total failure. It was inaccurate, unnatural, and unclear. The expression showed in the SL was really bad, Doc Miles failed in performing an operation to his own wife. He totally fucked up. Yet, in the Indonesian translation it turns to be kukerjai, which means to do some pranks.

(37)

24

CHAPTER III

CONCLUSION

Based on the findings, it appeared that most of the Indonesian subtitles in the movie Crank 2: High Voltage were acceptable. For more than 75% are at least possessing two categories of ideal translation, accuracy (A), natural (N), and clear (C) based on the scale proposed by Larson (1984).

In this research, the writer found out that, although there were some failures and errors, it did not have much effect in terms of understanding the whole story. The errors are quite understandable too because sometime it was in the form of euphemism. The writer also saw that some of the cultures in the SL were also transferred to the TL, like the swearing itself, some of them did hit the mark.

Using the findings in this study, the writer can propose one thing. In terms of modern translation, there is an audio visual translation. It is a vast topic that still needs to be explored further. There are other interesting topics that can be discussed further from audio video translation. There are still jokes and comedy show, sitcom, standup comedy, talk show and many others.
