PROTOCOL OF FRIENDSHIP AND COOPERATION
BETWEEN

.THE CITY OF ATHENS AND THE CITY OF JAKARTA

The Governor of Jakarta, Mr. .Sutiyoso and the Mayor of

- guided by the traditional links of friendship between the two countries :•
their capitals> Athens and J aka.rta,
- desiring to develop cooperation between the cities of Athens and .Jakarta in
the cultural, social and economic fields,

- convinced that the consolidation of friendship and cooperation between the
two c- iri 0s will contribute to the development of friendly relations between their
citizens, as well as between the countries of Greece and Indones ia,

- believing that cities today have a principal role in the decision making
)f international relations,

- taking into consideration that, in the new globalized world\ the Diplomacy
of the Cities is a challenge, to which all the key actors and decision makers in
international relat ions must respond, an opportunity to take advantage of, a chance
to achieve just and lasting solutions for welfare and prosperity,

have agreed upon the following;

Article 1
The two cities will endeavour to develop further friendly relations in order to
promote mutually beneficial cooperation in all sectors that are today of interest to
the citizens of Athens and Jakarta, taking into consideration the growing influence
of information and communications technology on societies.

Article 2
The two cities will endeavour to exchange infom1ation and share expertise in
the following fields of city administration and municipal management: General
adm.inistration, municipal servicest vocational training and personnel managt..ment

of enterprises, cultural activities and tourism1 youth and sport, envirorunental
protectiont social welfare and other fields of mutual interest.

Article 3
The two cities will provide assistance in economic relations between
companies and businesses in Athens and Jakarta with the intent of developing
business and commercial cooperation by supporting entrepreneurs, initiatives an
iMovative implementations and enhancing ·. economic cooperation to the fulle··,
extent possible.

Article 4
TI'l.e two c1t1es will foster and develop cooperation on the bas is of more
specific programmes to be agreed upon and drawn up for their mutual benefit.

Article 5
The two cities voice their desire to contribute, through the encouragement of
cooperation and friendly mW1icipal relations between them, to safeguarding and
maintaining peace and cooperation in the ir region and in the world.
