VOCABULARY NOTES AND THEIR TRANSLATION COMPETENCE OF 5TH SEMESTER OF THE ENGLISH DEPARTMENT OF MUHAMMADIYAH UNIVERSITY OF PURWOKERTO IN ACADEMIC YEAR 2011/2012 DWI PRASANTI 0701050141

The aims of this research were: 1) to find out how good the students’ activities in making personal vocabulary notes are ; 2) to find out how good the students’ translation competence is; 3) to find out whether there is correlation between students’ personal vocabulary notes and their translation achievement.

In this research, the writer used descriptive correlation method. The writer used documentary and questionnaire to collect the data of students’ personal vocabulary notes and their translation competence. The population was the fifth semester students of the English Department of Muhammadiyah University of Purwokerto academic year 2011/2012, consisting 165 students. Using random sampling technique, the writer took 25% from the population as sample.

The result of this research showed that the students’ personal vocabulary notes was 64.9% and their translation competence was 63.8%, they belong to category good. The correlation coefficient result (r- result) was 0.408. it was higher than r-table for N=41 with level significance of α= 0.05 (r-table= 0.308). it means that the writer’s hypothesis was accepted that there is a significant correlation between personal vocabulary notes and translation competence at fifth semester of the English Department of Muhammadiyah University of Purwokerto academic year 2011/2012.
