ABSTRACT
Pramono, Eko. 2012. The Analysis of Nominal Group in the Jakarta Post and
Asian EFL Journal. English Education Department Teacher Training and
Education Faculty Muria Kudus University. Advisor: (i) Diah Kurniati, S.
Pd, M. Pd (ii) Fitri Budi Suryani, S.S., M.Pd.
Key words: Nominal Groups, Jakarta Post, and Asian EFL Journal.
Nominal group is a group of words which has a noun (a word which
names a person, place or thing) as its head word and includes all additional
information related to that noun. There are some differences between Jakarta Post
and Asian EFL Journal. Based on the genre, Jakarta Post includes news item and

Asian EFL journal includes report. Based on the publisher, Jakarta Post
newspaper is published by a company (can be said non academic) and Asian EFL
journal is research journal written by professional researcher and published in the
academic area.
The purposes of this research are (i) to find out the nominal group patterns
used in the headline news of Jakarta Post, (ii) to find out the nominal group
patterns used in the abstracts of Asian EFL Journal.
This is descriptive qualitative research. The data of this research are
written data which contains nominal group patterns found in the headline news
article of Jakarta Post published on April 2012 and the abstracts of Asian EFL
Journal published on February 2012.
The result of the research shows that: (i) there are 25 nominal group
patterns found in the headline news of Jakarta Post, they are: DT (22.27%), PDT
(0,47%), NT (1.89%), ET (1.42%), CT (11.89%), TQ (11.37%), DET (1.89%),
DNT (2.37%), DCT (12.32%), NET (0.47%), DTQ (17.06%), PDTQ (0.49%),
NTQ (2.37%), ETQ (0.47%), CTQ (4.27%), DNCT (0.95%), DECT (0.47%),
DNTQ (095%), DETQ (0.47%), DCTQ (3.32%), NCTQ (0.47%), DNPDCT
(0.47%), PDETQ (0.95%), DENCT (0.47%), and DECTQ (0.47%). (ii) There are
16 nominal group patterns found in the abstracts of Asian EFL Journal, they are:
DT (26.80%), PDT (1.03%), NT (4.12%), CT (3.09%), TQ (11.34%), DET

(2.06%), DCT (12.37%), NCT (1.03%, DTQ (19.59%), PDTQ (1.03%), NTQ
(2.06%), CTQ (2.06%), DETQ (1.03%), DCTQ (10.31%), NCTQ (2.06%), and
NPDT (1.03%).
Finally, the writer suggests that nominal group is one of teaching materials
in learning language. So, Teachers can use news media (newspaper) and also
research journal as one of teaching materials. For the students of English
Education Department, they can study the nominal group structure trough mass
media and the other sources, especially newspaper and also research Journal. For
the further researchers, the next research will be more innovative if the further
researchers not only use written text as the materials of analysis but also they can
use the other materials, like spoken text.

ABSTRAKSI
Pramono, Eko. 2012. The Analysis of Nominal Group in Jakarta Post and Asian
EFL Journal. Program Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris. Fakultas Keguruan dan
Ilmu Pendidikan. Universitas Muria Kudus. Pembimbing (i) Diah
Kurniati, S.Pd, M. Pd (ii) Fitri Budi Suryani, S.S., M.Pd.

(0,47%), NT (1.89%), ET (1.42%), CT (11.89%), TQ (11.37%), DET (1.89%),
DNT (2.37%), DCT (12.32%), NET (0.47%), DTQ (17.06%), PDTQ (0.49%),
NTQ (2.37%), ETQ (0.47%), CTQ (4.27%), DNCT (0.95%), DECT (0.47%),

DNTQ (095%), DETQ (0.47%), DCTQ (3.32%), NCTQ (0.47%), DNPDCT
(0.47%), PDETQ (0.95%), DENCT (0.47%), and DECTQ (0.47%). (ii) Terdapat
yaitu DT (26.80%), PDT (1.03%), NT (4.12%), CT (3.09%), TQ (11.34%), DET
(2.06%), DCT (12.37%), NCT (1.03%, DTQ (19.59%), PDTQ (1.03%), NTQ
(2.06%), CTQ (2.06%), DETQ (1.03%), DCTQ (10.31%), NCTQ (2.06%), and
NPDT (1.03%).
