MODUL 4 : PEMBANGUNAN KERJAYA

PENGENALAN

  Modul Pembangunan Kerjaya ( Finishing School ) disediakan sebagai panduan dalam mengendalikan latihan kepada pelajar UiTM pringkat diploma untuk mempersiapkan diri mereka dengan persediaan dunia kerjaya. Modul ini menggarap tajuk-tajuk seperti ‘Employer’s expectation on graduates’, ‘Knowing Yourself’, ‘Branding Yourself’, ‘Resume and Cover Letter’ dan ‘Job Interview’. Isu-isu ini sangat asas dan perlu dikuasai bagi bakal graduan dalam proses mencari pekerjaan terutama dalam siatuasi persaingan yang amat kompetetif. Selain dari memiliki kelulusan akademik yang baik, pelajar perlu mengusai ilmu dan kemahiran insaniah yang boleh diterjemahkan dalam proses memohon pekerjaan melalui penyediaan ‘resume’ dan ‘cover letter’ yang betul, padat dan menarik pihak majikan untuk disenaraipendek bagi panggilan temu duga pekerjaan. Dalam situasi temu duga pekerjaan pula, sekali lagi bakal graduan perlu menterjemahkan segala kemahiran insaniah terutamanya kemahiran komunikasi, pemikiran analatikal dan kritis, etika dan moral profesional, kemahiran kerja sepasukan, keyakinan diri serta daya kepimpinan yang tinggi. Modul ini dikendalikan dengan satu sesi ceramah oleh pihak industri dan sesi-sesi Latihan Dalam Kumpulan (LDK) bagi membolehkan penyertaan optima oleh peserta agar pendekatan belajar melalui pengalaman memberikan kesan yang efektif dan berpanjangan.

  MATLAMAT:

  Untuk membantu peserta memahami kehendak/jangkaan majikan atau pihak industri terhadap graduan dan pasaran kerja semasa.

  OBJEKTIF

  Untuk memahami kehendak majikan/industri terhadap graduan

   pada masa kini.

  Mengenalpasti pasaran kerja semasa dalam semua sektor  Meningkatkan kompetensi dan kemahiran diri dalam proses  mendapatkan pekerjaan.

(Employer’s Expectation On Graduates)

  1.0 Objective/Introduction

  • To understand expectations of employers
  • To create awareness among UiTM students of those qualities seek by employer
  • To drive UiTM students to pursue those qualities

  2.0 What is Employability

   Employability of graduates is the propensity of the graduates to exhibit attributes that employers anticipate will necessary for the future efective functioning of their organization. ( Harvey, 1999)  Employability can be generally defned as having a set of competencies ( knowledge, skills and personal attributes or dispositions ) that makes an individual more likely to gain sustainable employment and to be successful in his or her chosen occupation

  3.0 Employer’s Expectation

   Employers worldwide want well-rounded graduates who possess (Work-ready graduates);

  1. Discipline-specifc knowledge and skills (hard skills)

  2. Desired soft skills

  3. Relevant work experiences (typically attained through internships or part time job)

   Based upon analysis of over 500 graduates recruitment advertisement in The Star and New Straits Time by Ranjit Sigh for the period June – December 2006, the most highly-valued soft skills were;

  2. Interpersonal skills

  3. Ability to work in a team

  4. Problem solving & decision making

  5. Leadership

  6. Achievement orientation

  7. Proactivity (initiative)

Perform well under pressure  MacLeod (2000) identifes the following as softy skills: ability to communicate efectively, creativity, analytical thinking, problem - solving skills, leadership skills, team-building skills, listening skills, diplomacy, fexibility, change-readiness and self-awareness.

   The lack of soft skills has contributed greatly to graduates unemployment, besides factors such as ;

  5.0 Why Soft Skills Important ?

   Survey conducted locally by Ranjit Sigh & A. Wahab in 2007 involving 336 Human Resource and Hiring managers indicated that 41.1 % of the respondents ranked soft skills as the most important criterion in hiring fresh university graduates followed by academic background, profciency in English, interview performance, graduate’s ft with company culture and internship/relevant experience .

   A study conducted by the Standard Research Institute and Carnegie Mellon Foundation involving 500 CEOs found that 75 % of long-term job success depended on people skills and only 25 % on technical knowledge.

   Soft skills enable graduate employees to optimize their personality and personal productivity.

   Soft skills contribute towards enhancing graduates’ moral intelligence  In today’s world, knowledge is often out-of-date in 3 to 4 years and graduates need to be prepared adequately for an unknowable future

  ARAHAN:

  

1. Fasilitator menjelaskan kepentingan penulisan resume dalam

proses pencarian kerja

  

2. Fasilitator mengedarkan kertas A4 kepada setiap peserta dan

meminta peserta menyenaraikan elemen utama dalam penulisan resume.

  

3. Fasilitator meminta beberapa orang bangun menyatakan elemen

penulisan resume.

  

4. Fasilitator menjelaskan tentang format penulisan resume dan

kandungan penulisan yang standard.

  

5. Fasilitator memberi panduan cara penulisan objektif kerjaya

(career objective) dan lain-lain elemen yang penting.

  

6. Peserta-peserta diminta menghasilkan satu resume yang sebenar

untuk diri masing-masing berdasarkan format yang ‘standard’.

  You can stand out from the others if you just write your objective from the employer's point of view, instead of your own. The key: To write an objective that answers this question: "What's in it for me?" , which is on every employer's mind as he or she reads your resume. To get you started, here is an example:

  OBJECTIVE Management position in procurement where over 10 years of experience will add value to operations.

  Avoid such cliche phrases as: "seeking a chance for advancement," or "where my skills will be utilized," or "where I can further my career." So, to keep your objective from being objectionable, put the focus where it belongs -- on the employer and their needs.
