CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

In this chapter, the researcher presents some topics dealing with introduction. These topics are the background of study, statement of problem, purpose of study, significance of study, scope and limitation, and definition of key terms.

1.1Background of study

Everyday people use language to communicate each other. “Language is a system of arbitrary conventionalized vocal, written, or gestural that enable members of a given community to communicate intelligibly with one another” (Brown, 2000: 5). It means that all of people need to communicate each other by using vocal, written and gestural to create a community. Furthermore, language is a very important of communications in social interaction. According to Calllender and Williams (2010: 7), communication is the way to delivered ideas to others. Communication is fundamental to any society. Communication has varieties of auditory such as facial expressions, body language and gestures. One of the communication tool that the people often use now is social media. It is very useful for our daily life for communicate with others.

According to Mayfield (in Sari, 2012), social media is best understood as a group of new kinds of online media which share most or all of the following characteristic, participation, openes, conversation, community and connectedness. It means that we can get any advantages from social media if we want to make bussiness there.

Twitter and Facebook are the most popular of social media that is used by users.

O’Neill (2010) stated that Twitter is a website where the users can leave and write messages of up to 140 characters for other people to read. Moreover, it is as the online equivalent of sending mobile phone SMS messages. It is not only can be used in website but also we can use in our mobile phone.

According to Anne (2012), Facebook is a social networking site used by people more than 800 million active users in every country on the planet, so far in 70 languages. Thus, Facebook can connected us to other people in the world with many languages that different. In addition, the users must selective for using Lebay words in updating status in Twitter because it only write messages of up to 140 characters. Besides, the users can freely updating the status to the Facebook because it can write limited messages.

Moreover, the most important purpose of Twitter and Facebook are to convey many information and messages into reciever in order to persuade the reciever to trust and get something interested in those social media. The receiver can use both of the social media for effectively. Today, Twitter and Facebook are able to share new words that commonly use by the users. According to Toshi (2010), the new words in Indonesia often called by Lebay words. Lebay is the word has the quality of being excessive. Moreover, it refers to a story, personality or personal appearance. It means that the statement that is exaggerated and have exaggeration on connotation. There are some example of Lebay words, such as “You” in daily basis. While in english it’s either “you” or “U” in sms language; Indonesians can say “anda”, “kamu”, “lo”, “elo”, “lu”, “elu”, “mu” and each regions also carry a different word while mix it

with the standard indonesians. Since Lebay words use the exaggeration of words, it will be categorized as one of figurative expression of figurative language.

Figurative expression can be said as figures of speech. Thomas and Johnson (in Ambarsari, 2013) stated that figurative language is language that cannot be taken literally (or should not be taken literaly only). Figure of speech is any way of saying something other than the ordinary way. So figures of speech is part from figurative language that cannot be separated. It use the words or statement that is exaggerated. The words that we use for Lebay words is called hyperbole in figurative language. Hyperbole is commonly used even by ignorant people and peasants in the sense of exaggeration (Claridge, 2011: 1). “Her blood flowing to be river,” “I am hungry I

could eat elephant,” “your skin is smooth as cotton.” Those of examples are the

overstatement based on the statement above, hyperbole do not take the literally meaning, but adding words what we really mean.

Hence, hyperbole is wellknown as Lebay words in Indonesia. It becomes an attractive figurative language. Although, not all of the Indonesian people can accept that Lebay words because the Lebay words is hard to understand for their communication. Most of the Indonesian teenagers use of Lebay words in Verbal and Non-verbal communication. Because of the Indonesian teenagers more understanding Lebay words in their behavior, spoken and written. Consequently, it desires them to create many new words of Lebay in social network like Facebook, Twitter, Wechat, Yahoo Messanger, etc. Therefore, the researcher considers that there is developing tendency for people to use Lebay words in their daily life.

Sari (2012) in her research entittled An Analysis “Lebay” Words Used by Twitter Users on Tweeting found that “Lebay” words have three characteristics; repetition of

letters, a new words formation, and “Lebay” in sentences.

According to Haryanti (2013) in her thesis entitled An Analysis of The Lebay Words in Status Updates of Facebookers, there are four types of hyperbole found in Facebook. They were single – word hyperbole, numerical hyperbole, repetition hyperbole and comparison hyperbole.

In a nutshell, based on the explanation of previous reserach, the researcher is interested to compare Lebay words found in Twitter and Facebook status update.
